Outside of Schwarber being a LHB with power, he really doesn't seem like a good fit. I agree with those who think the Sox will have him playing 1B when he's ready to return. If he can play that position well, then he will end up being a good fit. It still surprises me that JD never took any reps at 1B.

The 'push for Scherzer' was probably nothing more than Bloom asking about him to get a feel for what it would cost the Sox. It would have been negligent of Bloom not to have done so. As expected, the cost was too high and Bloom moved on.

I think that it is a misperception that the FO did not make any key moves because they didn't think the Sox have a strong chance of winning the WS this year. As a fan who is non-critical of Bloom's trade deadline, I certainly don't think that the Sox don't have a strong chance of winning the WS this year. I just don't think the cost of some marginal gain was worth sacrificing the long term. Our team is good enough. Sale should be that huge boost that we're looking for. We don't want to relive 2020.

Some people were just hoping for the team to be watchable. I think we all have to admit that we've exceeded that bar.

It's not really about any of the individual moves, some of which have worked out really well and others that haven't. For me, it's about his overall team building philosophy. I am 100% on board with that philosophy, so when he makes moves that I know are made with that long term sustainability in mind, I'm not going to fault him.

Not a tighter grip, necessarily. Just not the all out win at any cost approach that Dombrowski had. That was never a good philosophy and Henry knows that. He had a moment of weakness after the Sox finished in last place 3 out of 4 years. He has regained his senses and hopefully won't have a relapse. Henry will continue to spend and will spend big if the deal and time are right.

The timing of this mini slide coinciding with the trade deadline did not help the mood of most fans. It's tough to see our rival teams pick up players while the Sox seemingly didn't do as much. Perhaps the Sox didn't need to do as much? At any rate, it's only one week. Next week could be a whole different story.

It's been a tough week for Sox fans, no doubt. Losing is never fun, especially when the other teams in the division are winning. That said, every team will go through stretches like this during the season. Every single team. Every time the Sox have hit a little rough patch, they have bounced back nicely. Cora has a cool head on his shoulders. I don't like losing any more than anyone else does, but I am not concerned. As far as Bloom is concerned, he is the man. I am very pleased with what he has done so far.

The Sox starting staff actually ranks a little higher than middle of the pack in the AL for every stat/metric that I looked at.

Bloom did not fail at the deadline, so he has nothing to learn from this. His priority is still the long term sustainability of this team, while at the same time keeping this year's team competitive. He did exactly what he set out to do. The kind of moves that the media and fans were looking for Bloom to make are the exact types of moves that will get the team in trouble. After reading Bloom's comments after the trade deadline, I'm an even bigger fan than I was before. Thank goodness he is our GM.

ERod remains one of the unluckiest pitchers in baseball. He is pitching much better than the results he is getting.

I agree that adding reinforcements can spark a team, and that seems to be the case with the Yankees. Though no team should be taken lightly, you all have a nice stretch coming up where you should be able to make a run. It's looking more and more like my prediction of the Red Sox eliminating the Yankees in the playoffs (with Whitlock and Ottavino shutting you guys down) will come true.

I know that. I was still pulling for the Rays. If the standings are the same as they are now the next time the Rays and the Yankees play, I will pull for the Rays. Despite the last 2 games, I have enough confidence in the Sox to take care of their own business against the Rays. No sense in letting another team, especially the Yankees, back in the race.

What a difference a week makes in the mood of fans. Hang in there. The Sox will be fine.

Considering the predictions by most people coming into the season, you would have to call it a success. If you asked the question before the season started, I think most people would say it was a successful season.

Our starting pitching was never supposed to be our strength. They are average and will keep the team in most games. Our starters' ERA ranks them 8th in the AL. That's with the league worst BABIP of .332. The offense has to get it done.

I did not read all 50 some pages of posts since I was last on here, but I'm getting the sense that many are disappointed in Bloom's deadline moves (or lack thereof). Anyone who was expecting a blockbuster type move was likely going to be disappointed, just at they were over the offseason. Bloom's priority is still long term sustainability, and rightly so. Going for broke this year, or making moves in reaction to what the other AL East teams did, would have been a huge mistake, IMO. Trading for a player who is on the IL with a hamstring injury is kind of risky, but if Schwarber can stay healthy, he will be an upgrade offensively, regardless of whether he plays first base or not. Sale has the potential to be the biggest acquisition and upgrade that any team received at the deadline. Our trade deadline was 'meh', but I am 100% happy that Bloom stuck to the plan. Bloom is the man.

The Yankees are not out of it by any means. I'm not sure that the bit of sacrifice you made to your farm system will be worth it, but time will tell. I felt like the Yanks were going to make the playoffs anyway, even without the upgrades. Winning the World Series is a whole other story.

I would use WAR to assess a pitcher before I would use ERA alone.

I agreed with Denny several posts ago that over a career, a pitcher with a very good ERA is probably a very good pitcher. I don't think that is as true for a pitcher with lower ERA. I agree that there is no perfect stat. The best approach is to look at as many stats as possible. That said, if I had to try to assess a pitcher using one stat alone, it would not be ERA.
