  1. Well if he won't lack for opportunities, and he wants to take a year off from baseball, then there is nothing foolish in his decision.
  2. Another strike against Greinke, besides age, social anxiety disorder, and peripherals that tell you not to be fooled by his 1.66 ERA, is that he will cost a draft pick. I can't see the Sox signing him.
  3. I really don't know, but I think the Sox are more likely to trade for a #1 than they are to sign a free agent. I'm going to say Carrasco.
  4. He is a "gym teacher" by choice. What he is employed as now is not the point. The point is that when (if) he is ready to get back into baseball ops, he will not lack for employment opportunities like you think he will.
  5. It's good to see some players finally accepting the QO. Last I heard, Rasmus, Wieters, and Anderson have accepted. I think this will make the teams think a little longer before handing out a QO to some of their free agents.
  6. Yeah, I read that about Hunter. It's possible that Hicks has matured and/or that the change to a new team will be great for his attitude. Honestly, I think it's a trade that sounds good for both teams.
  7. I really don't know anything about Hicks, other than what I've read about him the past couple of days. However, I always find it surprising when a young player is "disinterested". It was the same way when I read that Middlebrooks said he "lost the fire". If you're a young kid with a good chance of making your life long dream of being a major league star come true, how in the heck do you become disinterested? That said, sometimes a change of scenery does wonders.
  8. I probably would too. Then again, I really don't want to see any of our young players traded, though I know it will be necessary. As Dombrowski said, it will be painful.
  9. Was reading earlier that Jose Quintana might be a better trade target than Sale. Quintana's numbers are not as good as Sale's, but they are very good nonetheless, and Quintana would come cheaper. Quintana has a very reasonable contract through 2018 with two very reasonable option years. Also, scouts are more confident with his body type over Sale's.
  10. It remains unknown who was behind the Lester low ball fiasco, but IMO, trading for Porcello sounds like a Ben move. If Porcello continues to pitch as badly as he did last year, that one is on Ben.

  12. Here is the link: https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/11/10/could-red-sox-make-work-with-hanley-ramirez-roster/EHgjm7MpcyILdcbNMlgCdM/story.html And here is the pertinent quote:
  13. Solid post Ex1. I read that the Marlins are not happy with Boras and his "butting in" when it comes to how the Marlins plan to handle Fernandez, deepening the rift between the two parties. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but perhaps the Marlins would be more inclined to trade Fernandez due to their frustration with Boras.
  14. The short term plan failed miserably the last 2 years. It was unbelievably successful in 2013. The long term plan is right on track.
  15. This is exactly why I hate the Hot Stove. This stuff drives me crazy, but I can't NOT read it. Fortunately, there haven't been any reports of the Sox being close to trading Betts, Bogaerts, Swihart, etc. yet, so I've been able to remain relatively calm.
  16. I still think the cost for Chapman will be too high, no matter how lights out he may be.
  17. I'm sure it will be painful, and I'm sure I'm not going to like it.
  18. I don't think the Sox were interested in bringing Salty back, even on a one year deal. IMO, that's why he was not given the QO, because they felt there was too big of a chance Salty would accept it.
  19. Hicks is coming with some baggage, and probably part of the reason why the Twins traded him.
  20. I agree that it was a calculated risk, but it was still risky nonetheless. It worked out, so all is good. That doesn't change the fact that had he gotten thrown out at home, thereby ending the game, the reaction to that play would be very different.
  21. This is correct. Most players are looking for multi-year contracts instead of a one year deal, even if it means less money per year. Some players, like Stephen Drew, are going to end up getting burned by having that draft pick attached to them.
  22. I tend to agree. I much prefer an elite defensive catcher to an offensive one.
  23. Chapman is expected to make about $13 mil in arbitration. Giving up prospects for a relief pitcher who will only be under control for one year, plus approximately $13 mil in salary is too steep, IMO.
  24. That's the point - it wasn't a full rebuild. It was rebuilding while trying to remain competitive. And from what Gammons wrote yesterday, some of those expensive contracts came from higher up.
  25. If the Sox obtain a #1 starter through free agency, then they could use their trade chips in other areas of need. That said, Votto and Chapman also come with large salaries. Price (or whoever) would come with a large salary. I can't see ownership willing to commit to that much over the luxury tax.
