  1. LOL Bell. Touche'. This is not quite the same as choking though. This is not falling on one's face in high pressure situation, such as a playoff game. Greinke has shown that he is not a choker.
  2. Price's struggles in the postseason should really be of no concern. The guy can pitch, no question about it. I think he has the perfect mental make up for pitching in a city like Boston and for being the leader of a staff. In terms of free agents, he's the guy I most want, contract aside. Not knowing Greinke personally, I have no idea whether he can pitch in a pressure cooker like Boston. I don't think it's quite the same in LA. His anxiety might not be an issue at all. However, I think it's a legitimate consideration when you're handing out that kind of money and giving up a draft pick to sign him. Not that I would be unhappy if the Sox signed him.
  3. Last year this time the Sox had just signed Hanley and Pablo. I'm sure there was plenty to talk about.
  4. I have never lived in LA, but from what I understand, no place is as frenzied and no team's players are under as much scrutiny as they are in NY or Boston. The anxiety may or may not be an issue, but it is something to take into considertion when handing out that much money. Not to mention the draft pick that he will cost. Somebody also brought up the very valid point that in LA, Greinke was not expected to be THE GUY. He had Kershaw to take some of that pressure off. If he came here, he would be expected to be THE GUY.
  5. I understand liking a GM that is forthcoming about his offseason intentions, but I think it's in his best interest not to be so open about it. As you said, it can't be a good thing for other teams and agents to know what Dombrowski is trying to do. Someone reported yesterday that Dombrowski is "all in" on Price and that he thought the Sox would be the high bidder. I want Price, but I hope Dombrowski doesn't get stupid with his offer. The contract that he is going to get already makes me shudder, without Dombrowski trying to outbid the other teams on top of it.
  6. Money will talk, it's just a matter of how much the Sox are willng to outbid some of the other teams by. I think you and I are in agreement that all offers being fairly equal, Price is not choosing Boston.
  7. Nicely said Jacko. I'm impressed.
  8. I agree with you that Rodriguez deserves to be in the rotation to start the season. That said, what if Buchholz and Kelly are absolutely lights out in spring training and Rodriguez struggles, for whatever reason? Do you still start Rodriguez over the other two? Yes, I understand that spring training doesn't necessarily mean anything, but is it possible if Rodriguez is struggling, the team might be better off with the other two in the rotation while Rodriguez gets his timing back or whatever? Kelly and Miley also have options. One of them could very well be starting the season in AAA.
  9. It passes the time. What else is there to talk about?
  10. If Kelly and Buchholz aren't 100% ready to go, then they should not be in the starting rotation to open the season. If they are 100% ready to go, then they should be. What if Rodriguez is the one who's not 100% ready to go?
  11. That's all well and good, but what happens when one pitcher gets injured and another underperforms?
  12. That's not necessarily true about depth not winning the WS. Depth is not as important in the postseason, but teams that get to the postseason often do so because of their ability to not miss a beat when their regulars go down. That goes for pitchers as well as position players. The 2013 Sox had that ability.
  13. I wouldn't spend months seeing if Kelly is going to work out as a starter, but IMO, he's worth another look as a starter after the way that he pitched at the end of the last season.
  14. Good for Hanley. All reports on him so far this offseaon have been good.
  15. It's often difficult to understand the reasoning behind something you disagree with, but because you disagree with it doesn't mean that the rationale doesn't exist. I completely understand the rationale behind the Kimbrel trade, and the rationale behind Dombrowski being so aggressive with that trade, even though I disagree with it.
  16. Being a DH after this year should help to keep Hanley healthier. If he's with the team this year, I think he will be getting a fair number of ABs in the DH role.
  17. Read today that Price and his agent told the Jays that they were far and away his top choice of teams he'd like to sign with. I still think the Sox are going to have to outbid other teams by a fair amount in order to get Price to come to Boston.
  18. They would not be thrilled if they had to trade him and pay almost all of his salary. That would be giving him away, and some team would take him if the Sox paid enough of his salary. Their best bet would be to try to swap "bad" contracts with another team.
  19. As I said in my previous post, I'm not necessarily advocating that Rodriguez start in AAA, just saying that it's not necessarily a stupid decision. IMO, Owens definitely should start in AAA, not only for depth purposes, but also to become more polished and because having both Rodriguez and Owens in the rotation to start the season is too risky.
  20. But how do you know that having Kelly in the rotation won't give us the strongest possible rotation in the long run? It would be in the team's best interest to see what we have in him as a starter, IMO. I'm not necessarily saying that I want Rodriguez to start in AAA. I want him in the starting rotation. But if Dombrowski decided to start him in AAA, I would understand the decision.
  21. I disagree that it would show a lack of any kind of sense or stupidity. Teams often do things similar to this due to roster crunches. As noted, it might not be right, but it happens. Anyway, moot discussion because I realize that it is not going to happen with Rodriguez.
  22. I'm not suggesting that Dombrowski wait until the end of the offseason, hoping for a bargain.
  23. Dombrowski has pretty much said, not in so many words, that Rodriguez will be in the rotation. I agree that he deserves to be. I'm just saying that there is rationale behind starting a young guy with options at AAA. Having Kelly start in the pen and being the #6 starter is certainly an option for depth, but that also creates a hole in the pen that needs to be filled. That said, if Kelly can pitch as a starter the way that he did at the end of last season, he should be starting. Dombrowski has stated that he sees Kelly as a starter.
  24. It's not the benefit to him personally, but the benefit to the team of having more depth and more flexibility.
  25. I am fully aware of that and I have said many times that I do not want him playing first base. I think he has the athleticism for it, but I don't think he has the concentration for it. That said, I don't think the Sox should just give him away, just to have him off the team, especially now in light of the fact that Ortiz is retiring after this season. My hope is that Hanley can at least be serviceable at 1B this season. I think he can be used in the DH role once or twice a week, and he can be replaced with a defensive sub late in games that we're leading. If worse comes to worse and he ends up being a real liability at 1B, then Shaw can take over everyday 1B duties. If that's the case, perhaps Hanley will have recouped his value offensively and some team will need a DH at the deadline. If he's not traded, at least he will have a position in 2017.
