Dombrowski strikes me as the type who will have a short leash on any of the players who underperformed last season. If someone like Kelly is not performing up to par after being given a fair chance, I think Dombrowski will tell Farrell to try something else.

On a related note, for anyone who has any doubt about whether FOs are looking at things like Fangraphs projections, from the horse's mouth: "It's something we talk about daily, really," Hazen said. "In the scope of analytics, there's public and private information. There's a lot of stuff that's out there. We obviously read that stuff and we look at it. There's a lot of prime data streams that we have access to that the public doesn't. We can take that and create our own. "We're trying to create our own metrics a lot of times. There has to be rational thought behind that. You have to know what you're looking for. It's becoming bigger and bigger with the Statcast™ stuff that's coming out. There's defensive stuff, performance stuff, injury information that we may have access to that we've never had before. We're trying to collect that ourselves. We're trying to collect it from the public and take it and really create our own proprietary stuff."

This is one of my concerns with Dombrowski. So far, he has refrained from any major shake up within the organization, but we'll see how it goes.

On the topic of Hanley, my concerns with him playing first base have always been more of a mental concern than an athleticism concern. To me, he just seems like an airhead who can't stay focused. The inability to keep his head in the game is obviously a huge concern playing first base. I've been wondering recently if being involved in most defensive plays could help him to better stay in the game mentally. Perhaps his focus will be better if he has more to pay attention to and doesn't have time to let his mind wander? One can only hope.

Fangraphs' standings projections have a wide variability in results, as does every other projection system, computer or human based. As far as individual player projections go, they do a much better job. Regardless of their predictive value, fWAR is an extremely accurate measure of what has taken place. Sandoval's WAR of 3.1 in 2014 indicates that he was a very good player in 2014, and there was no reasonable expectation that he would play so poorly in 2015. His contract was an overpay, but it should have been okay for at least the front half.

Seriously, most of us here understand that you don't sign a player based on playoff numbers. You really think that Cherington is that stupid that he would give out a large contract based on that?

I don't know which executives, but seeing as how they are baseball executives who deal with the Sox FO regularly, I would think that they have a pretty good understanding of what's going on. Certainly, I would value their opinions over the opinions of posters on a message board who have a bias against Ben and who have no first hand knowledge. From Peter Abraham's article at the Globe: "A few other notes from the GM Meetings: In speaking to several executives, it’s clear that Ben Cherington will not lack for employment opportunities. The consensus is that many of his moves will pay off long-term for the Red Sox and that several mistakes made on his watch were the product of decisions made above him."

Pablo was a fan favorite in SF. For the casual fan, which is who PR is typically aimed at, Pablo is definitely a "sexy" signing. He was a well known free agent name, and you can bet the post season heroics also bode well with that group. Had he played well and had the team played well, Panda marketing could have been huge.

Kelly said yesterday that Farrell called him over the winter assuring him that he was not going to be traded, and assuring him that he had a spot in the starting rotation, at least to start the season. It seems that the Sox see something in Kelly as a starter and that they are committed to him in that role.

Not really. No one is expecting our rotation to be great, though it has potential to be very good. The projected improvement from this team is not coming from the 2-5 slots. None of the projections for those pitchers are overly optimistic. The team's projected improvement is mostly coming from the addition of Price, the improved BP, and Hanley and Pablo regressing to at least replacement level.

Several baseball executives stated in an interview that most of the "mistakes" made by Ben came from directives from higher up. That's more evidence than you have to the contrary.

If anyone was seduced by Pablo's postseason numbers, it was Lucchino. He's the one always trying to sign "sexy" players.

OTOH, Theo was a master at turning short term players into draft picks. The Sox drafted Swihart and JBJ with the picks they got for Beltre.

Oh geez, I keep forgetting that you guys don't do Fangraphs. Baseball Reference's dWAR is a bit of a misnomer. What they use for "replacement level" defensively is league average. Their reasoning for being able to call it 'defensive runs above replacement' is that replacement level players are usually league average defenders. So, defensive wins above replacement is actually defensive wins above league average. Pablo's career BR dWAR, not including last year, is +0.9. If you want to say he has always hovered around being average defensively, I can live with that. He has not been a defensive liability.

I have said many times that managing the players, especially in a city like Boston, is more important than managing the games. Francona was a master of managing his players. I am still undecided about Farrell, but I suspect his in game managing is probably not as bad as most people think. Francona was always heavily criticized for being a poor in game manager by people (meaning fans on message boards) and that simply was not the case.
