    You have no way of knowing that he is 20 pounds heavier than last year. You don't like him because he's fat, and you are making a lot of assumptions about his character based on your dislike of him.

    Pablo have the finger to every player on the team the same way that Lackey gave the finger to all of his teammates by his show of frustration on the mound when a play was not made? Or the way he gave the finger to his manager when he didn't want to be taken out of the game? Lackey took all kinds of flak for those things. It turns out that he's just a competitive player who, by all accounts from his fellow players, is a great teammate.

    Wanting to give him a chance is not enabling anything. I just think people deserve a chance to make amends. If he doesn't improve, I'll be leading the charge to have Shaw start in his place. As far as the evidence that you see with your eyes, you eyes will see what you want to see.

    Well that's why I said it depends on how dire the situation is. It's possible that Panda could be mildly struggling, but the team could still be winning despite that. Anyway, it's a moot point how long I would give him.

    Apparently, the crow hop is helpful to a pitcher in improving his arm speed, but to me it seems like an arm injury waiting to happen.

    I'm not surprised they stopped where they did either. As I said last preseason, I also think that in many ways it makes more sense to wait until midseason to make any additional moves. At that point, you have a much better idea of what the team's needs will be for the remainder of the season.

    Kelly looked good today. He appears to have stepped it up. If he can continue to pitch like he did today and at the end of last season, the rotation behind Price should be okay.

    If you move a pitcher into the clean up spot, you are talking about a difference of 15 runs (1-2 wins) over the entire season. If you switch the #6 and #8 hitters, you are talking about 2 runs over the entire season. The difference is so small that it is more important to: 1) Put batters in a line up position where they feel comfortable hitting, and 2) Separate your lefties to avoid the opposing team being able to use a LOOGY for two batters in a row.

    That sounds reasonable. Personally, I would give him until ASB, but that also depends on how dire his and the team's situation is after a couple of months.

    How do you know he hasn't given himself a chance? You don't. The fans and the media are making assumptions about his character and his attitude based on nothing but speculation and the fact that he's fat. It's the same thing that people did with Hanley, who has so far proved his naysayers wrong. And it's the same thing that people, yourself included, did with Lackey when he pitched poorly, and he proved his naysayers wrong. Pablo may or may not prove his naysayers wrong. He deserves the chance to do so before being crucified though.

    My understanding is that the Sox are "revamping" Pablo's defense to help combat the declining range. Hence, the "work in progress" comment. I agree that there's a sense that the Sox are at least preparing for the possibility of Pablo not showing any improvement. Farrell's comments today about Shaw possibly getting regular at bats was kind of telling. That said, I still believe that most people are not giving Pablo a fair chance to bounce back this season.

    Agreed. Comparing a relief pitcher, including a closer, to a starting pitcher or position player doesn't work. Replacement level for relief pitchers is much lower. When you consider that when a closer becomes injured, a team usually fills that position with the set up guy, and the new relief pitcher being added to the team is often replacing a "lesser" reliever, that drops replacement level even lower.

    I agree that the bottom line is securing the save, and how the closer goes about doing that really isn't relevant. As I said, Paps is still an effective closer. Except that as a fan watching the games, I really want my closer to come into the game and set the opposing team down in order. It's extremely nerve-wracking to watch a closer give up a couple of hits or walks before getting the job done. Either way, I completely agree with UN that Papelbon is overpaid.

    Well IMO, the top stars making $30 million a year are overpaid also. Regardless, relief pitchers, including closers, are the easiest players to replace. The dropoff between the best closer in the league and an average closer is not large enough to warrant the salary difference. I love Papelbon, and have said many times that I would take him back if not for the large salary. So this is in no way a knock against him. But he is overpaid.

    I think you're right. I was one who really didn't want to see Hanley at 1B, more because of his inability to maintain focus than for any physical reasons. I still have my doubts about his defensive ability there, but less so now than I did before ST. So far, he has proven me wrong. I think there's a difference between having concerns about a player's ability to get the job done and not being willing to give a player the chance. Voicing concerns is fair game. Spewing vitriol and assassinating characters is not, IMO.

    If he doesn't show any improvement the first couple of months of the season, I will be right on board with everyone else about letting Shaw be our everyday 3B. But give him a freaking chance people. I don't mean you MVP, I mean pretty much everyone else on this board, and in the world.

    I think we are agreeing that Papelbon is still a good closer. I agree that he is still effective in that role. I said that Koji was more efficient, meaning that he got the job done quickly. Koji doesn't mess around. What I remember with Papelbon is that there would often be some 9th inning drama before he would eventually get the save. The only issue I have with Paps is his contract. No closer is worth $15 mil a year.

    Dombrowski doesn't strike me as the type to hang on to prospects. IMO, he would make the deal in heartbeat, even if it were an overpay, as long as the deal is somewhat in the realm of being "reasonable". Look at what he gave up for Kimbrel. Dombrowski has not attachment to our prospects. Despite the recent controversy, Sale is likely not available for any price that is reasonable.
