Even though I think that we paid too much for both Kimbrel and Price, I have said many times that I liked the job that Dombrowski had done so far. Up until the benchings of Pablo and Castillo. I am very much in disagreement with those. I am concerned with the direction in which he is taking this team's philosophy. But it may very well work. It may be that he will not be as aggressive in years to come and that there won't be as drastic a change as I am fearing. It is far too early to assess Dombrowski. He is certainly much more qualified to build a team than I am. So while I will voice my concerns, for now he gets the benefit of the doubt. So, what's the harm in giving Pablo and Castillo 1-2 months of regular season starting time to see if they can bounce back? If they fail, you bench them at that point, and the same message is still sent. There are many benefits to doing that.

Philosophy points that may take a hit: 1. Not handing out big contracts, especially to aging pitchers, except in very rare instances 2. The use of analytics as a large part (note that I did not say the only part) of building a team 3. Making moves that are best for both the short and long terms, rather than a 'win now at any cost' philosophy 4. The importance of and prioritizing the farm system Which career? Henry's baseball and business career.

Except if Porcello had pitched well and then left as a free agent, this board would be all over Ben for not locking him up during ST when they had the chance.

More assumptions being made in this thread. I would bet that if you made a mistake, or had a bad week/month/year, when the rest of your career has been pretty good, you'd want people to give you a second chance. I would also bet that you would not appreciate it if people judged you on your appearance.

All of the above. More to the point, all of those moves represent the reversal of philosophy which is very concerning.

Here's another thing. Before these ridiculous decisions to bench Pablo and Castillo, one of our team's strengths was the bench. So what do the Sox do? They weaken the bench considerably to maybe get marginal improvement at 3B and LF. Moves cannot be made in a vacuum? Since when is it a good idea to fill a hole that quite possibly isn't even there (and if it is there, we quite possibly aren't improving upon it) by creating another hole?

It is precisely because he was the worst full time player last year that you would expect regression. Players just don't typically go from being a roughly 3 WAR player to being a -2 WAR player overnight. It just doesn't happen.

Do something? Absolutely. Do a complete reversal on your philosophy? No. And as I've said many times, it's because Boston fans are impatient. There is very little appreciation for the long term picture here. It's all about doing whatever it takes to win now, to heck with long term ramifications.

That's okay, I did not make that post for an audience. You are correct. No one suggested that we would field a team of all home grown talent. But there are certainly strong suggestions here that within a year or two, we would have home grown talent at virtually every position.

Panic had everything to do with it. When you do an apparent 180 degree about face from the philosophy that has basically made your career because of basically two bad years in a row, that's panic. Henry (and fans) should have waited this out 1-2 more years.

No, I think it was a sincere last attempt to sign Lester. I think that the FO just completely screwed that one up with the $70 million offer, then made a last ditch effort to salvage that relationship.

Part of the reason for developing a farm is to have the trade chips to fill in the holes. I would have traded for a young starter rather than trading for Kimbrel. I realize that is easier said than done, because you need to have a trade partner who is willing and reasonable. Also, I do realize that it's sometimes necessary to hand out a huge contract to a free agent, pitching or otherwise. It's just a necessary evil. Making a trade for a pitcher like Porcello was the correct move. It hasn't worked out so far, but it was a good move. No one thought that Porcello would outperform Lester, but Porcello was a good value trade.

Heyman: Now there seems to be some disconnect between Pablo and his agent, which isn't good, but this seems to be on the agent, and not on Pablo.

Bingo on the Farrell part. Panic mode! If Pablo and the Sox are doing that badly after a few weeks, then the leash obviously becomes shorter.

No, he needs a fair chance THIS season in real games. Players do bounce back from poor seasons. And despite what some people thing, Pablo is likely to regress to his norms both offensively and defensively, at least to a decent degree.

I was agreeing with you that there is no clog. Those who are saying that we have a clog are just using it as another excuse to gripe about Ben.

The future is now, but you don't make decisions for the now without taking into consideration the ramifications for the long term.

From Cafardo, who makes some very good points. The point about where that quickness went was raised by me a couple of days ago. To me, it sounds like rash decisions being made by someone in panic mode.

As strong as our farm system is and as much as I prefer home grown players over expensive free agents, you cannot field a team with all home grown players. It's unrealistic.
