    Guardians/Cubs would be fun. It would be hard to watch either of those teams lose. That said, you can't count the Dodgers out yet.

    Basically, teams paid approximately $8 million per win through free agency this season. Therefore, Porcello's 5.2 WAR is worth $41.8 million to the team. Porcello would not make that much as a free agent for 2 reasons. One, free agents get their worth in a contract through the length of the contract, not through $/year. Your really good free agents, like Price, sacrifice what they are actually worth per year to get the 7+ year contracts. Price may be worth $35 million this year, but he likely will be worth far less than that by year 7. If he were willing to sign a one year deal, he might have received a $50 mil/one year contract. Two, while Porcello was worth $41 million this year, there is no guarantee that he will continue to be worth that much next year or any year after that. Regression due to aging is factored into free agent contracts, which sort of goes along with point one.

    No, $41 million is not what he's going to get paid on the open market, but it is what he's worth to the team in terms of wins.

    I liked the deal as well. Not only because of Porcello's age, but because of his peripherals and because of the awful defense that he had playing behind him in Detroit. There was every reason to believe that he would live up to the contract.

    It's not meant to be an excuse. It's like the rationale for signing Price. We needed an ace. The fact that Price didn't pitch like an ace is not Dombrowski's fault.

    The Carson Smith trade was the one Dombrowski trade that I really, really liked.

    Not nonsense at all. Peavy helped not only solidify the rotation, but indirectly helped solidify the bullpen as well.

    That's what I keep saying, even the Pablo move. I may not like it, but I can understand the rationale behind it.

    That's the thing, IMO. It's not really letting Lackey go after we lost Lester. It was losing Lester in the first place.

    Personally, I had no problem with the deal at the time. I liked it, not only for Kelly, but I was confident that Craig would be able to bounce back from injury.

    Oh, I agree. I'm not saying that Lackey was in any position to expect or demand an extension. He signed the contract. He should be willing to honor it. But if there is any truth to that, then Lackey kind of forced the FO's hand. I'm not trying to dis Lackey either. I like him, and have been his biggest defender.

    Both pitchers are likely to regress a bit, Price to the good and Porcello to the bad. It should be a very good 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation.

    Well, at least we have another game to watch. The Guardians need to wrap it up tomorrow though. We don't want the Jays getting too hopeful.
