  1. LOL You have to enjoy life, that's for sure. But it's about striking that balance.
  2. I knew that you were retired. That was my point. You planned for your long term, rather than saying that you don't care about the what happens 30 years down the road. The philosophy should be the same with running a baseball franchise.
  3. Well I have said that if we win that one ring, the trades will have been worth it. But we haven't won that ring yet.
  4. I liken the importance of planning for the long term in baseball to planning for retirement. You can enjoy today all you want, but you still have to be concerned about and plan for your future. It would be stupid and reckless to have the attitude of not worrying about what happens 5, 10, or 30 years down the road because you are just going to enjoy having fun now.
  5. An arm like Sale is not a must in order to win a World Series. Certainly Sale improves our chances, but we had a good chance of winning a World Series without him.
  6. You do not know that the Sox were going nowhere before. We were a legit WS contender before Sale. He is a great addition, but he was not a NEED. I realize that the Sox are in win now mode. I just disagree with the philosophy of gutting the farm to win now.
  7. I have never remotely said or implied that you are less of a fan because your opinions are not in sync with mine. I state my opinions strongly because I strongly believe in them. I don't form my opinions lightly, and it's unlikely that I'm going to back down from them. I realize that they are just my opinions, as I realize that when I say something like Dombrowski is wrong that it is just my opinion. I am not going to preface every statement that I make with 'IMO'. I try very hard to respond to other posters respectfully because I know that everyone has a right to his or her opinions and I do respect them and that right. Much to my dismay, I am not above getting snarky now and then, but that is usually in response to a shot taken at me first, whether directly or indirectly. Just so you know, when you take a shot at me or an opinion of mine, it feels an awful lot like disrespect.
  8. I don't think anyone has a problem with having 3 big guns in the rotation. Everyone is thrilled with that. There are two things that had Ben's hands somewhat tied behind his back. 1. Larry Lucchino - Ben was not given full autonomy. 2. Henry was strongly against signing a 30+ year old free agent pitcher to a large contract. He did an about face on that once he hired Dombrowski.
  9. Good post. It's interesting how Dombrowski has turned me from being a homer to being a whiner.
  10. I think Dombrowski is going too far with adding the pieces through trade and free agency. He is not striking enough of a balance between short and long terms. The whole idea of having the sweet taste of winning in our mouths and wanting more is exactly what got the team in trouble before, when Lucchino wanted to sign 'sexy' players. Yes, we all want to win again, but you have to show some restraint when building the team. Fortunately, we do have a 3 year period in which we are well set. Maybe our farm will be replenished by then.
  11. 1. Maybe the impression that some people have no regard for the farm system come from all the posts of people saying that they don't care about 2021 and that they're not going to worry about it? 2. It's funny how you and I read the same posts in the same forum, and you feel that the people who have no room for a middle ground are posters who have been opposed to Dombrowski's moves, while I see it as the people who really like his moves are the ones who have no room for a middle ground. 3. The only opinion that I said was wrong was Jacko's statement that we could say eff the farm system, and I stand by that. We can't do that. And if you think we can do that, then you are contradicting your own point.
  12. lol
  13. Well said Moon. You and I are in complete agreement on this topic.
  14. Excellent post Jack. Thank you. I hope that Dombrowski pleasantly surprises me with regard to replenishing the farm.
  15. Like Moon, I am pretty sure that Cherington would have made some moves last year if given the chance.
  16. I'm sure they do. The idea that the team doesn't seem too concerned with the long term is a little disconcerting to me.
  17. No, there are some here who do not like him. And yes, Ben did have his hands somewhat tied when it came to signing an aging starting pitcher. However, I'm not sure that Ben really disagree with that notion.
  18. Exactly. And that's how it's done, boys.
  19. Well, according to you, I am an expert. You have referred to me as such in many posts. I read a bunch of stuff, but I do not blindly adopt anyone's opinion. I form my own opinions based on many factors. It is only my opinion, but you're not going to convince me that it's okay not to worry about the farm, not matter how good a chance it gives us to win this year. FTR, it is possible for 2 + 2 = 5.
  20. You were not here at the time. There was quite a bit of heated discussion on the topic. Cherington is not well-liked on this board by most.
  21. Well, it offends me when people say that they don't care what happens in 2021, so we're even. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. As I said before, 10 years might have been pushing it a bit, but the point stands about the long term outlook of the team. Of course there are no guarantees. But if you have a strong farm system and a very strong young core of players already at the MLB level, the future is very bright. There are a lot more possibilities available to a team who has a well-stocked farm than to a team who has a depleted one. There are analysts whose job it is to work on these very long term projections and scenarios.
  22. Price could be made out of paper, but I don't think so. I also don't think that the stats really show any evidence of this. Like you, I was a strong critic of Price last season when he was not pitching up to his 'ace' expectations. But I'm not going call him a 'choker' based on his postseason stats. I also believe that Price will be our ace this upcoming season.
  23. No disagreement with anything you posted. Overall, I believe our team is improved over last year's team. I don't share the concern that you do about JBJ, but we still don't know for sure exactly what we have in him offensively. Either way, though, his defense keeps him on the field.
  24. IMO, there is no good time to go all out if it means depleting the farm system in the process. There has to be a balance between short and long term goals. We could have been very competitive for the next 3 years while maintaining a good long term outlook. I don't believe in staying status quo either. Most of what you said in this post I actually agree with, though I don't think Sale makes as big a difference as you do. I think our only real point of disagreement is that I don't think it was right for Dombrowski to sacrifice our long term for the short term goals. It wasn't necessrily the Sale deal, but rather the combination of moves he has made since he joined our team.
