  1. It depends on what alignment works best overall for the team. I am not condoning moving Devers just because his defense was shaky this year. I think he will improve. However, if the Sox can get a better deal on a better player for 3B than they can for a 1B, then by all means they should move Devers to 1B.
  2. I can guarantee you that if Reed had come into the game and coughed up the tie, there would be no end to the 'Farrell is an idiot' posts.
  3. IMO, you have to bring your closer into the game in that situation. I have said many times that it's kind of silly to lose a game in the late innings with your best reliever sitting on the bench. Kimbrel was the right call.
  4. Well said. It was a heartbreaker to lose the game in the late innings, when Sale pitched so well and Kimbrel is usually lights out. The team showed some fight though, and just got beat by a better team. Nothing to be hang their heads about there. It was a great game. With the Sox now out, I would not be upset if the Astros win it all. The same goes for the Guardians. Hope the remainder of the postseason is entertaining.
  5. NY is a pretty tough town too. I think it just depends on who is have the worse season.
  6. I have seen many runners do this. Mookie does it, and he is considered a very smart baserunner.
  7. I have already agreed with you that there have indeed been boneheaded plays. I just don't think there have been as many as you and some others claim. I'm not talking about the obvious boneheaded plays, like forgetting how many outs there are. IMO, aggressive base running is often a judgment call. If it works, the runner made a great baserunning play. If it doesn't, the runner is stupid.
  8. Farrell said that if the game had remained close, Price was coming back out for another inning.
  9. Haha. This is not always the case, but I do agree that a lot of what is called 'boneheaded' was just and aggressive play that didn't work.
  10. Yes, there is. You want to look at run expectancy matrices. It will tell you what the run expectancy is for each base/out state. You can then compare the difference between run expectancy of having a runner on 1st with no outs, or having the runner thrown out when trying to advance to 2nd (no runners on, 1 out). It's different for every base/out state. This is the same type of thing that is used for stolen bases versus caught stealing and sac bunts.
  11. I still think Hanley played most of the year with injuries to both shoulders. IMO, if he can get healthy, he's a batter that we want on our team.
  12. Porcello has been named.
  13. No, that only works for lineups.
  14. I had a gut feeling that Fister might get the job done, but so much for that. How great it would be if Porcello can shut down the Astros tomorrow.
  15. One down, 10 to go! We're still alive! One game at a time boys.
  16. Hanley was on a freaking mission today. But the man of the hour is obviously Price. Not only did he shut down the Astros, he also saved many of the other pen arms, should they be needed for tomorrow's game.
  17. I was going to post the same thing. Did Price suddenly learn how not to be a choker? Or perhaps the rest that he got while being on the DL made the difference pitching in October?
  18. If Mookie doesn't make that catch, the Sox are likely going home.
  19. I was too young to watch (or remember) that series, but things like this happen all the time in baseball. In a short series, randomness (luck) often prevails.
  20. Dudes dig the long ball!
  21. Fair enough, to an extent. IMO, the bigger issue was the starting pitching, because this team was built to win based on pitching, not offense.
  22. Although at the moment, I admit that I have very little confidence in him.
  23. I have not given up on Porcello yet. I don't expect a repeat of his 2016 season, but I do believe that he can be a #2 pitcher for us.
  24. I posted in another thread that it is very unrealistic to expect to be able to cut players loose when they are no longer playing up to their contract value, especially if there are still multiple years remaining on the contract. Cutting Pablo loose was no small task. I would not expect that to become the norm. That said, with the luxury tax being reset, I think the team has more financial flexibility going into this offseason.
