  1. To me, leading by example is absolutely leadership.
  2. Personally, I think Sale has been a great leader for our team. That said, he did not exhibit great leadership at all when he cut up the uniforms with Chicago.
  3. I agree with this 100%. I have always said that a manager's most important job is what he does off the field, not on it.
  4. Well, that's the impression that I got from reading some of the posts (not necessarily yours). I have heard comments along the lines of the team lacking leadership once Papi left, implying that Papi was that guy leading the team to the promised land. Leadership comes in many forms. A player being a good role model by having a great work ethic and attitude can be an excellent leader without saying a word. I think we have several of those guys on our team. I guess I'm just not buying that last year's team lacked leadership.
  5. I can't argue with that.
  6. I do not disagree. There is no reason why Dombrowski should have to raise his offer. JD needs to come to grips with the reality of his market. That said, I do want JD on our team. And I'd like to have some kind of resolution to the whole matter.
  7. I am fully on board with this post.
  8. This is a time when I'd really like to be able to give a vesting option based on performance. A little creativity similar to Darvish's deal might do the trick. I am guessing that the deal will ultimately contain an opt out after 2 or 3 years. My head is telling me that Dave needs to stand pat, on principle if nothing else. My heart is telling me to give JD the extra $10 mil (if that will get the deal done), and call it a day.
  9. No clue. You'll have to enlighten us.
  10. I'm not really sure what this great team leader was supposed to do. Inspire the other players to work harder? Does anyone really think that our players were not working or trying hard enough? I see it as quite the opposite. I think they were trying too hard. A team does not necessarily lack leadership because they don't have that guy who's going to be a vocal presence in the clubhouse. There are other ways to be a leader.
  11. I do not disagree that we had some blunders where a player just didn't have his head in the game. However, I think it is far fewer than some others think it is.
  12. There are many fans who have said similar things, or said that last year's team was not very likable. I just don't agree with it. I found the team very likable and enjoyable to watch. And I believe that many of the mental blunders can be attributed to the guys trying too hard.
  13. Or maybe Theo had Lucchino forcing his hand in the matter.
  14. Once again, stop. Just stop.
  15. Bingo. Dombrowski is no Theo, that's for sure.
  16. And this is why JD needs to come to grips with reality. I can see Dombrowski going up to $150 mil if he needs to, but as of now, there is no need to do so. One of the writers suggested that Dombrowski increase his overall offer by $5-$10 mil. It really wouldn't be much of a difference for the Sox, but it might be enough of a moral victory to JD to get him to end the standoff. And he might come to Boston with less 'bitterness'. I'm not sure whether I agree with this or not. On one hand, it would be nice to get him signed and have him with the team for spring training. OTOH, why should Dombrowski bid against himself? Especially if there isn't another offer that's fairly close.
  17. Nah, the playoffs are pretty much a crapshoot. The better team does have a slight advantage, and I do mean slight, but not really enough to make a difference.
  18. I didn't like AJ because the dude would not take a pitch. I know we want our guys to be a little more aggressive, but AJ took it to the other extreme. At least it felt like it.
  19. It is messed up indeed.
  20. Stop Jacko. Just stop.
  21. I'm not getting all the 'lack of fire' and 'lack of leadership' criticism. IMO, we had some youngsters that often tried to do too much. That's about it.
  22. Since when? Price was supposed to be as close to a sure thing as you can have with a starting pitcher in his 30s.
  23. BP has finally released its standings predictions. "Boston Red Sox projected to finish second in AL East with 87 wins, New York Yankees first with 96, per Baseball Prospectus" Bell, you may officially begin to panic. Then again, they predicted the Sox to win 88 games last year and the Rays to win the division.
  24. Hindsight aside, $13 mil was a bargain for Buchholz.
