  1. RBI is a fine stat, as long as it's taken in context.
  2. WAR doesn't give credit for productive outs, but it does give credit for a player's hustle. Obviously, it's not recorded as 'hustle', but if a player is hustling on the bases and avoids an out or takes an extra base, that player will be credited in his base running stats. Likewise for defense.
  3. No one in the history of baseball has ever treated WAR as gospel. I will defend it as a very good and reliable metric, flaws and all, until I'm blue in the face, but I know that it's not the end all be all.
  4. The bottom line is that WAR does a pretty darn good job. Just because a stat is flawed does not mean that it's not a good stat.
  5. If you want a quick, single metric to compare players, then WAR is the best one to use. It is the most comprehensive stat. As is the case with any evaluation tool, the more you look at, the better the assessment will be.
  6. Not really. At the very least, this shows that the team is not losing or 'suffering' because JBJ is in the lineup.
  7. As you say, it's fine for what it is. IMO, if someone pitches a quality start, then you know he kept the team in the game and gave them a chance, despite what the ERA of 6 runs in 3 innings might look like. Game scores would be a better measure.
  8. Bradley has been extremely feeble and difficult to watch at the plate, there's no denying that. Fortunately, the Sox are keeping pace with the Yankees, so we can afford to be a little more patient with him.
  9. I am not willing to sacrifice defense behind the plate to gain more offense. I'm happy with the tandem that we have. Besides, as many have noted, neither one of them is as bad as they are currently hitting.
  10. Nunez and Holt are not meant to play everyday. They become exposed and worn down. I am looking forward to the return of Pedroia.
  11. Though they work, I am not a fan of defensive shifts. At least not to the extreme that they are used these days.
  12. He pitched very well. It would still be nice to see him go a little deeper in games. Good job though.
  13. Cora said something today about how he's not going to give up on his slumping players on May 20. He realizes that it's still a small sample size. I have confidence in Cora to handle the players' playing time correctly.
  14. fWAR adjusts for ball parks. Mookie is going to get more credit playing right field at Fenway than Judge will get for playing right field at Yankee Stadium. bWAR only counts balls that would be in play in any ball park. This is somewhat of a 'park adjustment', but I think it would hurt Mookie for plays that he makes that would be 'out of range' in other parks. But Mookie would not be penalized for not making a play that would be 'out of range' in another park.
  15. WAR does not give credit for productive outs. Productive outs are not as important as most people think they are. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by hustle (base running or defensively?), but either way, 'hustle' is accounted for in some form or another.
  16. This is true. However based on Cora's comments, I don't think the Sox have any intention on sending him down for Pedroia.
  17. It was good to see JBJ get a hit that started a 4 run rally today. A very well hit double, at that. Hopefully that gets him going. Good win today, and good series all around.
  18. Ha, kind of hard to do, isn't it? The Os out hit the Sox, yet lost by 5 runs.
  19. I just posted something about playing Moreland over Hanley in another thread. That said, I would not go so far as to say that failure to do so is a negative trait of a manager. As you noted, there is far more that weighs into the decision than what we realize. Also, a manager has to have patience with his players. Patience.
  20. Speaking of Hanley, if he doesn't start improving soon, it may be time to start giving some of his ABs to Moreland. I am one of Hanley's biggest supporters, but Moreland is currently outplaying him in every aspect of the game. If Hanley is not producing, he should not be given the PAs to allow the option to vest, when we have a better alternative sitting on the bench.
  21. Actually, one of the good things about WAR is that it allows you to compare players that play different positions.
