    I agree Nick. My priority at the deadline was adding a late inning reliever, but even that I didn't consider to be a dire need. Our team is in excellent shape. Take it one game at a time and enjoy the ride.

    It gets frustrating to watch, for sure. We have to keep reminding ourselves how young he is. He would be the youngest player in Pawtucket and Portland (I think I have that right). He was called up before the team would have liked to call him up. We need to have patience with him.

    Right, but Mookie is a great player who is also entering his prime. That's a good combination for the way his offense has skyrocketed. No, there's no way of knowing how much JD has impacted the rest of the team. As I've said, on that level, I really wish that we could have played the season without JD, because I knew that once we signed him, he would get all of the credit. IMO, this was a great offense to begin with.

    I agree with your first sentence. On your second point, there might be something to hitting being contagious within a game, or maybe it's just the pitcher going through a rough patch. OTOH, the ability of a team to cluster hits (or avoid the clustering of hits if you're a pitcher) is mostly random.

    The idea of the players feeling more confident with JD in the line up is a fair and valid one. I can buy into JD helping others through 'intangibles', and have stated this in previous posts. This is not line up protection though. IMO, Cora has also made the line up better through intangibles such as instilling confidence in players and alleviating some of the pressure they might have felt last year. Not the same thing as line up protection. FTR, let me be clear. I absolutely think the line up would have improved significantly even without JD. However, I can believe that JD has made them a little better than they would have been otherwise through his leadership and coaching, etc.

    It could be. If Mookie had hit in 2016 like he did in 2017, I'd be more inclined to believe that JD was a huge factor. But because Mookie was an MVP candidate in 2016 who regressed in 2017, but was entering his prime, I'm more inclined to think most of it was going to happen anyway. I'm not saying JD didn't help Mookie. I think both he and Cora helped Mookie with his approach, but I really think we would have seen a big bounce back from Mookie even if we had the exact same team from last year, including Farrell.

    I disagree because they were managing with different priorities. If both managers were trying to go all out to win the game, then I could agree that Cora was outmanaged. But Cora was managing more with the long term goals in mind, not the specific game.

    More important than the 1/2 game is the shortening of the calendar. The Yankees are quickly running out of time.

    I don't think bringing Kimbrel into a game for a 4 out save every once in long while is, even in April/May classifies as trying to win at any cost.

    Bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the 9th, and they come up empty.

    I don't think anyone has argued against JD helping the other players through leadership and coaching. My argument is that: 1. The offense would have improved significantly even without JD. 2. JD is not improving the line up through 'protection'.

    Cora was not outmanaged. Cora has the luxury of still managing the marathon and long term season goals while Kapler does not.

    Yup. I like to think of it as trying to 'win at any cost', which you do if you're in an elimination game.

    Well, I will say that I recall one game in which Kimbrel was brought in for the 4 out save that really didn't make much sense to me, though I don't recall the exact game. That said, I don't think he has misused or overused Kimbrel in order to win at any cost.

    As you said, Devers' error hurt Eovaldi's overall line. He very likely would have gone at least 6 innings if not for the error and the National league rules. When you hear the praise for Leon coming from the pitchers and also from Cora, it's hard not to believe that Leon is doing a fantastic job behind the plate.

    Cora on the team's luck (randomness): The Sox entered Wednesday with the best record in baseball, their 86 wins the franchise’s most ever through 121 games, but the math would say some luck has been involved. Baseball-Reference.com’s Pythagorean luck statistic, which measures the difference between actual won-loss record and Pythagorean won-loss record, claims five of those wins have come with a little good fortune. Cora didn’t dispute that number. He also didn’t feel bad for whatever breaks the Sox might have gotten this season. “Sometimes I look at baseball-reference, their expanded standings,” he said. “We’ve been lucky for their standards. Oh, well. I’ll take it.” My man.

    The numbers say that WAR correlates to actual team wins with an r^2 of roughly .87, depending on which version of WAR you use and which sample of data you look at. That's pretty darn good. The correlation should only get stronger as improvements in technology and tweaks to WAR itself make the stat even better. Here's the thing about stat geeks. They are not going to find a stat (or anything) that works and then rest on their laurels. They understand and acknowledge the shortcomings, and they will continue to find ways to make improvements.

    And a 4 game sweep against the Yankees right before that. We can't win every game. The good news is that the Yankees lost as well. Scratch another game off of the ever shortening calendar.

    Kapler needed it way more than the Sox did. Cora said it well when he said that of course he would like to win every game but that he will not go chasing wins. Smart man.

    I am not as down on Devers as some people are, but this was funny as heck. Eovaldi did indeed have a plan at the plate. LOL

    I am sure it did. And if he were doing it against us, I'm sure I wouldn't like it nearly as much.

    If somebody else signed him for the same or very similar deal, AND he were having the same type of year, probably. OTOH, if the Sox were still 5 games up in the division, maybe not.
