  1. You are right that most dumpster dives usually won't amount to much. The point is that they are risk free. They are worth taking the chance on.
  2. Exhibit A The defense rests.
  3. My bad on saying 'everyone'. Twice.
  4. I am guessing the discussion about adding Clay as minor league depth is moot, as some team will offer him a big league contract. The fact that he is good enough that he probably will get a major league contract makes it kind of odd that people don't think he's good enough to sign as a depth piece. And you're right about having a June opt out, though he could choose not to exercise it.
  5. What's the risk though? We're not talking about counting on Clay as our 5th starter. If he's not healthy, nothing lost. If he is healthy and can give us what he gave the DBacks last year, what a steal.
  6. Completely agree.
  7. On the 25 man roster, the relievers are the easiest to replace. Hence, their replacement level is lower, which in turn doesn't give relievers much worth in terms of WAR. I'm not saying that the closer's role is not important. I have never said that a bullpen is not important. The Red Sox will be fine Jacko. They are fine now, they will be finer after Dave adds a reliever or two.
  8. Kimbrel is no Koji! I like Kimbrel and wouldn't mind having him back if he didn't cost so much. It has always been my belief that we can get the same production at the closer's position for far less money than what Kimbrel will command.
  9. I 100% agree with your first sentence. I mostly agree with your second sentence, though the verdict is still out on that.
  10. I would argue that Barnes was our top reliever behind Kimbrel. At any rate, Kimbrel and Kelly combined gave us 2.2 WAR. Also, our pen is not nothing. It is weaker than it was last year, but it's not nothing. We're still the favorites. When we add a couple of relievers, we'll be heavier favorites.
  11. There are several posters on here who thing Dombrowski can do no wrong and have more or less bestowed savior status to him, while at the same time bashing Ben. Is it really that difficult to identify the top pitchers and then overpay for them? Ben did not have the autonomy or the open wallet that Dombrowski has. Castillo turned out to be a really bad move. IMO, that was all Ben.
  12. We're the reigning WS Champs, with virtually the same team returning. Like the Astros last year, we're the favorites until another team proves they can take that away from us.
  13. ^^This. I'm happy with Bogaerts and Devers, thank you very much.
  14. Hal's comments after the Sox won the WS lead me to believe that the Yankees are going to go big on some player.
  15. To quote the great MVP, back to back to back to back.
  16. According to current WAR projections, we are not only the favorites for the division, we're also the favorites in MLB. Not that it means anything.
  17. ftfy
  18. Of course each GM works with the foundation set by the previous GM or GMs. I just don't think Dombrowski is as great as everyone else thinks he is. Dombrowski deserves some credit for 2018. He's not the otherworldly savior to this team that everyone makes him out to be. I could have made this team a championship team walking into the situation that Dombrowski walked into and paying what he paid for Price, Sale, and Kimbrel, as could any of us posting here with some baseball knowledge, and I say that with all sincerity. I give Dombrowski all the credit in the world for his 2018 moves. Those were great moves. Even Kinsler.
  19. Why not Clay? What's the risk?
  20. Nobody said anything about making it a priority. Signing depth guys to minor league contracts is never a priority, but it should be something that is continually on the FO's radar. It's not something that would in any way hinder whatever else the team is trying to do. I don't get why some people are so opposed to signing a starter to a minor league contract. The move is virtually risk free, and there is potential for some pretty good reward.
  21. Many teams use more.
  22. Obviously, the pen is our priority over finding depth starters, but there's no reason why Dombrowski can't do both at the same time. The depth guys will be minor league contracts and will cost virtually nothing.
  23. More than 3 or 4. Take a look at how many starters teams typically use in a regular season. We have several on our list of starters who are questionable health-wise.
  24. I did not like the Price contract. But I have said that if we win a WS, then all of the moves will be worth it. Because we have a real chance at winning the title again in 2019, I'm glad that he did not opt out.
