  1. There might be a team that surprises us just by the sheer wacky nature of baseball. But Jacko's point stands. Having so few teams that have a legitimate chance at the playoffs while having so many teams that are basically out of it from day one isn't good for the game.
  2. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I think this is geared towards the teams who really aren't even trying, in other words, tanking with no intent to rebuild. A team really has to be losing a lot for a prolonged period to incur this penalty. I suggested to penalize teams who aren't spending a certain % of their revenue on payroll rather than penalizing teams that spend too much, but I think the purpose is the same.
  3. I think this is the year JBJ develops some consistency in terms of not having those prolonged uber slumps.
  4. Obviously, health and injuries will play a role in how good the Sox are. But assuming reasonably good health, I don't think the Sox are any worse than last year's team. I just don't see the loss of Kimbrel and Kelly as being as big a deal as you think it is. Whatever loss we do get from losing Kimbrel and Kelly is made up by having Eovaldi for a full season over Pomeranz and the string of other 5th starters that we had, who collectively, gave the team a whopping 0.2 fWAR.
  5. Other proposed changes: 1. A single trade deadline before the All Star Break - I don't think I like this idea. 2. Draft advantages for winning teams and draft penalties for losing teams - Sign me up. 3. Lowering the pitcher's mound - Please, no.
  6. I read that the the proposal was for 26 man rosters with a 12 pitcher maximum, so the extra roster spot would go to a position player. Also, I kind of like the idea of a pitcher facing a minimum of 3 hitters. I haven't really thought the ramifications through that thoroughly, but on the surface, I like the idea. Another proposal to speed up the game is to shorten the commercial breaks at 1/2 innings. BINGO!
  7. It was dumb because Cora refused to play him much. That said, it turned out that we needed him while Vaz was out.
  8. From PA: The workout crew at Fenway South today included Matt Barnes, Colton Brewer, Nate Eovaldi, a trimmed-down Rafael Devers, Tzu-Wei Lin, Austin Maddox, Rick Porcello, David Price, Eduardo Rodriguez, Chris Sale, Sam Travis, and Marcus Walden. All of our projected starters have arrived early. Good to see!
  9. Funny, I just posted something similar to you in another thread. This is why I care, when people ask why do you care how much the owner spend when it's not your money. Because it can possibly tie our hands in future moves.
  10. Good stuff. Though I am still opposed to the Mejia signing for reasons that have nothing to do with baseball and economical brands.
  11. That's all that needs to be said.
  12. I think it was a fine decision.
  13. I agree that the 2019 Yankees are better than the 2018 Yankees. I'm not sure that I agree about the 2019 Sox being worse than last year's version. Either way, is the difference enough to make up the 4 games according to our Pythagorean W-L records? Maybe you closed the gap some. Maybe you evened up the score, though I don't think so. But you did not surpass us. The Red Sox still remain the team to beat.
  14. We need to keep in mind that when contracts don't work out, or when the long contracts end up no longer being worth their value, even though the Sox might be willing to eat the contract, or even though the contract was worth it in the first half, this dead money may prevent the team from making future moves. Imagine what we could do with the money we're paying Pablo.
  15. If that happens, that is a FAR cry from his initial demand of 6/100. I think he'll get more than that.
  16. Thank you for the suggestion. I don't follow the NBA enough to have any idea of the tanking that goes on in that sport. Shame on the owners who are tanking for the sole purpose of pocketing every penny that they can.
  17. What makes you so sure that the Sox will be playing the wildcard game? You were pretty sure that the Yankees would run away with the division last year also and it didn't happen. It will be a dogfight, no doubt. But the Sox pen is just not a concern for me.
  18. If a GM is tearing the team down with the intent of rebuilding to win a championship, like the Cubs did, then I have no problem with that. I think there's a difference between that and a team that is just tanking to not spend any money.
  19. Funny thing is, the economical store brand is more often than not every bit as good as the name brand.
  20. Pythagorean differential is the way it should be approached. And not to nitpick, but BR has the Yankees Pythagorean total at 99 wins, not 100. Have the Yankees made up 4 games this offseason against us? I don't think so. By early projections, Fangraphs have the Red Sox and Yankees as being the two best teams in baseball, with 97 and 96 wins, respectively. To be fair to Jacko, Davenport has the besting the Sox by a whopping 6 games, 96 wins to 90 wins. IMO, the title is ours to lose. Back to back.
  21. In terms of the 2019 team, Dombrowski has in no way failed. Be serious.
  22. Not at all. Your second sentence was a nasty and needless thought.
  23. Stop Jacko. Just stop. You are also neglecting our secret weapon, one Alex Cora. Dude has the Midas touch.
  24. Not signing anyone of "big name" is not the same thing as not replacing them with anything. League average in IP/GS is 5.3. The Red Sox were 6th in the league at 5.4. Our projected top 5 starters averaged 5.7 IP/GS. We will also have 3 guys in our pen (Wright, Johnson, and Velazquez) capable of going multiple innings. Again, if we fail to make the playoffs, it won't be because of our BP. It will be because our starters failed to live up to expectations either due to injuries or underperformances or because our offense fell flat.
  25. As others have said, if we fail to make the playoffs, it won't be because of our bullpen. As far as buying our championships, here are some numbers that I read from a poster at MLB Trade Rumors that should make us feel better: The Yankees have paid $340 mil in tax for one WS championship while the Sox have paid only $47 mil to win 4 WS championships.
