Well said. I don't think Bogaerts has looked that bad out there either, but if a defender is not making a lot of flubs and is not particularly slow, we don't usually notice the plays that he is not getting to.

Sometimes, it doesn't matter who is behind the plate. If the pitcher doesn't have it, he doesn't have it. However, it is really hard to dispute the fact that Sale typically pitches better with Leon than he does with Vaz.

I am anti bunt almost always, but in that situation, I would not have been against it. If you're going to employ a sac bunt, this would have been the time to do it. 1. Extra innings, playing for one run as the home team. 2. Runner on 2B, NOT 1B. 3. Marco at bat, top of the order coming up. All that said, I'm not against Cora's decision to allow Marco to swing away. The problem was not Marco swinging. The problem was Jackie trying to make something happen by trying to advance to 3B on a ball that he had no business trying to advance on. Bradley screwed up. OTOH, if he had somehow made it to 3B, everyone would be calling it smart or heads up base running. -
Red Sox Stats @redsoxstats 4h4 hours ago Three games out of the break and the Sox bullpen already desperately needs an off day and there isn't one coming for 14 more days. Porcello may have to throw 120 pitches tomorrow no matter, and wouldn't be surprised to see a roster move. This stinks.

I am not excusing the bullpen, nor am I saying that the bullpen hasn't been bad recently. What I am saying is that I think the pen is worse than it would have been if the starters had done their job all season long. The pen has been asked to do more than what should be expected of them, which doesn't allow them to do their job as well as they could. I don't have any problem with the way Dombrowski addressed the pen this offseason. It is currently not working. I don't think the solution is that you need an expensive or 'proven' closer. The first part of the solution is to have the starters get deeper into games. The second part of the solution is to keep throwing pieces out there until you find the ones that work.

It seems like every time I look, our starter is in the first inning with 20+ pitches. Price did not pitch that badly, but it still took him 113 pitches just to get through 5 innings. On the other side, Ryu struggled in the first inning as well, but was able to pitch 7 innings with only 94 pitches. The inability of our starters to go deeper into games is a very real problem. Our pen cannot pitch 4+ innings in so many games. -

IMO, never having an incorrect call in baseball would take away from the game, in more ways than one. It's frustrating at times, but part of the enjoyment is the reaction to the umpires' incorrect calls, be it from the fans, the dugout, the pitcher, or the batter.

The strike zone and instant replay are not analytics. I agree that these things will likely result in better accuracy of calls, but IMO, they will not improve the game. I don't like most changes to the core of the game of baseball, like eliminating the "look to first, throw to third" rule, not allowing the catcher to block the plate (though I understand why that was added), and the automatic intentional walk.

They probably could improve the system, and IMO, would have to improve it to that point before considering it at the MLB level. Regardless, I am against the idea.

IMO, analytics aren't taking away anything from the human element and emotion during the game. Analytics aren't going to stop the Earl Weaver type arguments on the field, like robot umps and instant replay do. Analytics are more about what happens off the field in terms of assessing, planning, and strategy.

UGH The thought of robot umps really makes me sick. We are dehumanizing the game a little more with these types of changes. And that has nothing to do with analytics. #OldSchool

It was a good move. Dombrowski got a much needed 5th starter and was presumably able to stay under the tax limit without giving up much in the way of prospects. The Sox just need to hope that Cashner doesn't turn into a pumpkin before the end of the season. He is way outperforming his peripherals, which is not sustainable.

The pen can only do its job as well as the starters allow them to do it. The pen has not been good. The main problem with this team, however, remains to be the starting rotation. -
By all accounts, Sale is a fierce competitor who is harder on himself than anyone else is. I can't believe it's a health issue. The Sox would not have extended him, nor would they let him continue to pitch if he's not healthy. My money is on Sale to figure it out. Just hope it's sooner rather than later.

From what I heard in last night's telecast, the calls were not immediate. It took about 3 seconds for the ump to get the call from the automated zone and then to make the call. Think about that for every pitch. Waiting 3 seconds to get a ball or strike call. How is that going to improve the game?

At times, I get frustrated by how long some pitchers take in between pitches. It would be to the pitcher's benefit to stop overthinking things so much and to just get the ball and pitch. That said, there is often a lot of cat and mouse going on between the pitcher and the batter, or the pitcher and a base runner, which IMO, is one of the many great things about baseball. I would hate to see that aspect of the game taken away.

Not disputing what you are saying, but I think you also have to take into account the way the ASG is managed, which is far different than how regular season games would be played. I watched the game last night, and must say that I found it to be a fun and entertaining game. Good pitching and it was a close game. I enjoyed it.

Summer is good! It goes by way too fast! I have taken short trips to Texas and Pennsylvania so far, going on a 3 day road trip tomorrow, and a vacation to Lake Gaston in North Carolina in early August. But mostly, it's great to just have some time to relax. I feel like I go nonstop during the school year.

I have a hard time making a trade that creates one hole to fill another. That said, if the trade makes the team better overall, then you do it. Not that the Guardians are likely to part ways with Bieber, but it's a nice thought.
