    No argument with the logic there, but the BP is a big problem largely because of the rotation.

    This is what I was thinking. Do we have the pieces to get it done? I would not trade anyone on the current big league team outside of bench players, which would create one whole to fill another.

    This is absolutely true, but the Sox still need to address the 5th spot in the rotation. But you are correct, the players that we currently have need to play to their ability. Otherwise, adding a 5th starter will do very little good.

    I would take a flyer on any of those guys. I'm not sure the Sox have the pieces or the finances to get any of those guys.

    IMO, our pen is pretty much spent right now. They could use any help they can get. I still think the 5th starter spot needs to be addressed, regardless of what Dombrowski does with the pen. Making it a bullpen game isn't going to help the bullpen's situation any.

    We don't need to rehash the whole 'clutch' argument. I'll leave it at that.

    Of course. But not in the sense that they can raise their game to an otherworldly level. IMO, it boils down to 'clutch hitters' being good and smart hitters overall. What they do in clutch situations is similar to what they do on the whole.

    If Eovaldi is going to pitch out of the pen, I'm wondering if the Sox will look for a 5th starter instead. I have no idea what's out there and for what price. The bottom line is that unless the starters get it together, it won't make much difference adding an arm or two to the pen.

    You were implying that clutch exists because not much in baseball is a repeatable skill. There are some hitting metrics that correlate very strongly from year to year, indicating that the skill is repeatable. Clutch is not one of them.

    Saying that I would believe the stats over my opinion is not the same thing as saying that emotions do not play an important part of the game. You are reading into that what you want to hear. Not everything can be explained by stats. As an example, DCater just made a post about how he felt Marco Hernandez was successful because he knows that Cora has his back. I completely (and strongly) agree with the importance of knowing that your manager has your back. There are no stats to support that. Until or unless someone can show me that I'm wrong, I'm going to believe that this is one of many cases where emotions play an important part of the game.

    I am not going to complain about Bogaerts' defense. With everything else that he has brought to the team this year, I am very pleased with him as a player and a leader.

    I think it's been a long time philosophy of the Sox, Theo, and other organizations to draft the best possible player, not to draft based on need or by a specific position.

    I have posted many examples of my belief in how players' emotions affect their game, even going so far as to say that I have no stats to back that up. You just choose to ignore or not believe such posts because it doesn't suit your agenda against stat geeks. That said, if there are stats that strongly suggest that my opinion is incorrect, I'm going to acknowledge that my opinion is probably wrong and go with the stats.

    Technically, justice still hasn't been served to Bogaerts. Making it into the ASG as an injury replacement isn't really 'justice'.

    Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 10h10 hours ago The starters in place of Eovaldi have reached 50 innings pitched. They now have a 6.84 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. IMO, fixing the 5th starter spot is a bigger issue than fixing the bullpen. By fixing the 5th starter spot, the bullpen will also improve.

    Which re-emphasizes the point about relying on errors. The Cubs had a catcher playing right field. Enough said.

    It may be a combination of both. I'm guessing that he's not completely in midseason form yet, but I also believe that he's slowing down. I think we saw signs of that last season. I was not completely opposed to bringing Kimbrel back for 1-2 years. I didn't think it was a good idea to sign him for more than that, though, and I am completely okay with letting him walk.

    I do not disagree. Kimbrel ultimately got the job done, but there were too many games where there was too much drama getting there.
