  1. To me, it seems like ramping it up several times a week, sometimes 2-3 days in a row, would be more wear and tear on the arm than pitching once every 5 days, but I honestly don't know. That said, it seems that it's not a decision between having Eovaldi in the bullpen or in the rotation, but it's a choice between having Eovaldi in the pen now or having him in the rotation maybe a month down the road. That being the case, I think we would all choose having Eovaldi now. Also, Eovaldi is fully on board with going into the pen for now. He stated that it's partly his fault that the pen is in the shape that it's in, and it's his duty to help fix the pen. I believe he also sees himself as returning to the rotation sometime later this season. All that said, we need a 5th starter no matter how good Eovaldi might be in the pen.
  2. Bell is one of the best and most knowledgeable posters here.
  3. The spring training innings alone would likely not make a difference, but those saved innings, along with innings saved throughout the first 4 or 5 months of the season should make a difference on how strong the pitchers are in September and October. The verdict is still out for this season.
  4. Cora said Mookie looked tired. I don't think he wanted Mookie in the game, even only for one at bat.
  5. FTR, I read today that save % is the lowest that it's been over the last 10 years. I thought you would appreciate that.
  6. I am also not completely comfortable with Chavis. I can agree with the fact that he was a young kid who made a mistake and paid for it, and hope he never does it again. OTOH, did PEDs help him get to and stick in the majors faster? If so, what kind of message does that send to kids? Cheating gets you to the majors faster? I don't know.
  7. Exactly. Blown saves is not the best way to rate your bullpen, which I know you know, just like W-L is not the best way to rate your starters.
  8. I think it's more the slow build than the actual number of innings, but that's just a guess. Also, 4-6 innings might not be very significant, but those innings along with innings saved throughout the season will add up. I'm not trying to bash Cora. I'm a huge Cora fan. Just trying to figure out what the heck is wrong with this team.
  9. I'm not quite as down on this team as you are, but I do agree that Dombrowski needs to make a move or two to bolster our pitching. The problem is, Dombrowski's hands are somewhat tied by a weak farm system and financial constraints. There is only so much he will be able to do.
  10. Because the starters forced the BP to pitch more innings and in situations that they should not have had to pitch in. I'm not denying that the pen needs help. I'm saying that solidifying the rotation will help fix the pen.
  11. As many have said, it's not the lack of ST innings by itself, but rather a combination of several factors that caused the Red Sox slow start. However, I do think that Cora's philosophy or attitude during ST probably contributed.
  12. I do not think that the Sox were squeaky clean during the steroid era.
  13. It makes me sick when I see or saw someone like ARod hitting a game winning HR, or any HR against us. What goes through my mind is, freaking, cheating PED user. So yes, it bothers me.
  14. We will see. We need our starters have a strong 2nd half.
  15. Once again, the Yankees rotation was not meant to be a strength of their team. Their BP was, and their strong BP was designed to pick up a mediocre rotation, which they've done. With the Sox a strong rotation was supposed to pick up a mediocre BP, which it hasn't.
  16. Game Score measures the pitcher's performance, not whether the offense gave the pitcher any run support. That being the case, Sale is obviously not pitching at the level that he did last season. I know that he was the victim of some tough losses. You should know me well enough by now to know that I wouldn't count those against Sale. But letting him off the hook while blaming Porcello is rather unfair. Sale is as much to blame, if not more to blame, than Porcello. Once again, the BP would not be as much of a problem if the starters were doing their job. On the 5th pitcher spot, we agree completely.
  17. I do not disagree with your point that Cora did not have the team ready to play out of spring training. That said, I am going to see how the remainder of the season plays out before criticizing Cora for this. If the team, starters in particular, look really strong down the stretch and into the playoffs, then maybe Cora's approach worked. That said, the starters not being ready at the beginning of the season put the bullpen in a hole from the get go.
  18. I agree with you on the long rain delays. I had this happen to me at a minor league game. It was a huge PITA to sit around about 3 hours waiting for the game. We were told that we couldn't get a refund or a ticket to another game unless this particular game was cancelled, so we waited.
  19. I have nothing against Alonso, but it's kind of a shame that Vladdy Jr. hit 91 home runs and came in 2nd place. I'll watch the ASG if I have nothing else going on, but it's not like I make plans to watch it like I do regular Sox games. It may be on in the background while I'm doing something else.
  20. The 5th spot has been a problem for sure. I've said many times that I'd prefer getting a 5th starter over getting bullpen help. ERod's IP/GS is up to 5.7 from 5.4 last year. Porcello's is down to 5.5 from 5.8 last year. Price's is down to 5.2 from 5.9 last year. Sale's is the same as last year at 5.9. This year, however, Sale is getting pulled early more because of not pitching well than he is because of being pampered. Also, here are the average Game Scores of the starters this year as opposed to last year: ERod 50.4 vs 53.5 Porcello 53.2 vs 46.3 Price 55.9 vs 56.3 Sale 65.8 vs 57.6 Bottom line: The starters, on the whole, are not getting it done. It's all of them in one way or another, not just Porcello.
  21. I think it will take pressure off of the entire pen. For one, hopefully there would be fewer 1-2 run games and more games with bigger leads. Secondly, Cora would be able to use the pen the way he wants to, and not have to overuse them out of necessity. The pen is tired, which is part of the reason for their less than stellar performance lately.
  22. Also, the All Star Break is too long. LOL
  23. I caught the gist of what you were saying. The word 'uncle' just made me giggle.
  24. No, but the idea and hope are that if we can get the rotation to be solid like they should be, and if the offense continues to hit like they are capable of, there should be less high leverage late innings to be pitched. IMO, solidifying the rotation is more important than solidifying the pen. The former should somewhat take care of the latter.
