  1. You hit the nail on the head with both points.
  2. His style is to build a strong farm so that the team will have short and long term success. He will make a big free agent signing when it makes sense to do so.
  3. I don't see Bloom as a contrast to Theo or Ben at all. IMO, those 3 GMs are built out of the same cloth. Dombrowski is the odd man out here. I think Henry is getting back to his team building philosophy after straying from that with Dave.
  4. A very good point was made that this trade was not about saving money, but about replenishing the farm system.
  5. Bob Nightengale @bnightengale 2h In the past year, #Padres General Manager A.J. Preller has traded away 29 players, and still have one of the top 5 farm systems and a legitimate World Series contender. Robert Murray @byrobertmurray Padres rotation in 2021: Snell, Darvish, Lamet, Paddack, Gore/Lucchesi/Morejon/Weathers. Each players is under contract for multiple years and Mike Clevinger will return in 2022. These Padres are built to last. It sounds like the Padres are set up for both the short and long terms. To be able to trade away 29 prospects in a year to build a WS contender for several years and still maintain a top 5 farm system which includes most of your very top prospects is incredible. Baseball goals. The Padres trail only the Dodgers in projected team WAR and in odds of winning the World Series. If it's not the Sox, I really hope the Padres win it all.
  6. The Padres are going for it. For their sake, I hope it works out for them.
  7. My post was not a set up for anything. I'm simply stating that, like it or not, the Rays' method works. I understand that from a fan's point, it's very frustrating to get attached to players only to have them traded away while they're still performing very well. While I don't think it's a good idea to hand out those huge contracts, the Sox are not going to become the Rays. They will continue to have one of the highest payrolls. FTR, I am not a fan of all of the Rays' innovativeness on the field, even though I know that most of it is born out of analytics.
  8. I'm sure it's frustrating for the few Rays fans that there are, but the Rays have typically called the timing of these trades pretty good. Plus, the Rays have been pretty successful since they became the Rays. No, they don't have a WS Championship, but they make the playoffs at a good clip. The playoffs are a crapshoot, so judging them by the lack of championships is unfair. They have had this success at a fraction of the cost that the Red Sox and Yankees have. I'm impressed.
  9. In Bloom we trust. We'll get there.
  10. Something we completely agree on.
  11. I'm not sure if as many players go after the most money as you think. Yes, most of them probably do. But there are a lot of players who are willing to leave some money on the table to play for a team that they really want to play for. And there are many players who sign extensions before they reach free agency, which means they aren't going after the most money. Many players will accept a contract that they feel is reasonable and respectful.
  12. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers have come to terms with the 28-year-old Arihara, beating out both Boston and the Padres. The deal is for two years worth between $6-7 million according to multiple reports.
  13. I think Mookie was very concerned about what his free agency would look like once this pandemic hit. IMO, he was very fortunate to get an offer like he did from the Dodgers, and it would have been foolish of him not to accept. I was thinking that Mookie might be one such player to take a one year contract this season and try his luck again next season.
  14. I don't really disagree with what you're saying. Occasionally, it might be necessary to sign a player to a big contract. I don't think that it should be done to make a splash, but rather because it's the right move to make for the short and long term goals of the team. Posters here will typically follow the team whether we are winning or losing. Our love and appreciation of the game go beyond just winning. But for most fans, winning is what gets the fans involved.
  15. This brings us back to the Theo/Lucchino debate of whether teams should be built to provide the most wins for value or to put the most fans in the seats. Shiny new toys appeal to fans, for sure. Are they the best approach to building a team and a franchise? I don't think so.
  16. For me, the appeal of watching a group of home grown and 2nd tier players come together and have a winning season is so much greater than watching a group of high priced superstars do the same thing. Don't get me wrong, if we have superstars on our team, I will appreciate them and root for them just as much as I do for the other players. I just don't like their contracts. I prefer watching the unsung hero or underdog types having great team success.
  17. When it comes to team building philosophy, you are not old school at all.
  18. If the team is winning, the fans will come, superstar or not. If we had Mookie last year and the team performed the same way that it did, there would have been the same lack of interest in the season as there was without Mookie.
  19. Personally, I'm glad he is gone. The more I think about his attitude of going after the most money, the happier I am that he is gone. (Yes, perhaps I am a woman scorned.) LOL
  20. They clearly had the best team in baseball. I agree that their title does not get an asterisk.
  21. I love these types of signings. Even though none of them worked out all that well for us last year, I say keep 'em coming.
  22. I actually don't mind watching pitchers hit. In fact, it can be exciting at times. That said, whatever the rule is, it should be universal for both leagues.
