  1. There are some legitimate concerns about Pedroia's decline and health, but trading Pedroia right now would be a PR nightmare. As you said, Pedroia is the heart and soul of this team. After losing out on Lester, another home grown player, the last thing the Sox want to do is trade Pedroia. Besides, Pedroia is on a mission to once again prove his doubters wrong. You tell Pedroia that he is in decline, he will do everything he can to show you that he's not.
  2. Baseball is a very numbers driven game. Much more so than other sports. IMO, you need stats, and in particular, the saberstats, to tell the whole story. Also IMO, when someone says "I don't need stats, I know what my eyes see", that is a cop out on so many levels. And FTR, I do not have a small penis.
  3. Sorry, I should have said "acquire" a top pitcher, not "sign". Shields is the only top free agent left, but there are still other options available via trade.
  4. It is a crapshoot, to a certain extent. There is risk involved in any move, but obviously, some moves are much riskier than others. It's very easy to judge a move based on hindsight, but IMO, that's usually unfair. It's much more difficult to anticipate a move going in. Often, at the time of the move, the move is considered to be a great move by most fans and analysts. If the move does not pan out, for whatever reason, I don't understand all the criticism the FO then receives. Just because a move doesn't work out doesn't mean that it was a bad move. As you said, there is no certainty.
  5. I will also be surprised if the Sox don't sign a top pitcher. That said, right handed power (and offense in general) was another need, right behind pitching, so it's not that surprising that Hanley and Panda were signed. But I agree. It would be surprising that they spent big bucks on their offense, and stopped a little short on the pitching front.
  6. Good info Bellhorn. I did not know that. Were his teams really bad?
  7. :-* Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but not all opinions are created equal. When someone has an opinion that the season is over in May, for instance, I just can't give that opinion any merit.
  8. I'm in too, depending on the cost, of course. This sounds like something that is doable. Rizzo sounds a lot more realistic in his demands than Amaro does. I hope it gets done!
  9. This will be an interesting ST. IMO, there are a lot more questions that need to be answered than there have been in past years. As far as Hanley is concerned, I think (hope) that he has matured from the player that we have heard negative things about. It's a good sign that he reached out to the Sox and that he is willingly moving to left field. It's also a very good sign that he and Papi have a good relationship. I can't see him pulling any negative stunts with Papi (and Pedroia) in the clubhouse.
  10. Fellowship of the Miserable has a great ring to it, and it's so fitting for some Red Sox fans. I've only been here a short while, but I like what I've seen so far. The posters here seem very knowledgeable and level headed, for the most part. As someone else mentioned, what can be better than talking Red Sox baseball with a bunch of other fans who are as passionate as you are?
  11. Thanks Fred. It's not that I try to be snarky, sometimes it just sneaks out.
  12. Well, if people post crap, they must be called on it. No argument there.
  13. I tend to be very optimistic and very supportive of the FO and the team in general. It's not that I don't think the FO makes mistakes - they do. However, I can usually see the rationale behind what they've done, even if I don't agree with it. And no matter how much I think I know about baseball, I know that I don't know as much as those running the show. So, I will usually give them the benefit of the doubt. I don't have a problem with anyone criticizing the FO or any of our players. However, I do think there is a difference between rational criticism and straight out mindless bashing. Not that I'm saying anyone here does that.
  14. Thanks cp. I know that these discussions can get heated sometimes. I have to warn you, I'm not above throwing out the occasional snarky comment myself. I do try to keep it civil though. I find that most people will respond to you in the manner in which you respond to them.
  15. The moves certainly don't bode well for him. However, he still has options so I don't see any rush in trying to move him. If nothing else, perhaps he can at least raise his value by improving his offense some.
  16. I'm not a hitting coach, nor do I know a lot about the mechanics, but it seems like if it were something in his mechanics, it could be fixed easily enough. If it's in his pitch recognition and he's unwilling to "do his homework", then I don't suppose there's a lot that can be done to help him. To me, he doesn't seem like the stubborn type. I've always taken him to be someone who is willing to do what it takes.
  17. You can't really blame anyone for getting excited about JBJ after his hot ST. I know it's sometimes hard, but it would be nice if fans could temper their emotions some, and not make rash judgments, good or bad, based on a few weeks.
  18. LOL I'll give Fred the benefit of the doubt on this one since I honestly don't know if he was clamoring for JBJ or not. I know that Fred likes offense. So it wouldn't surprise me if he insisted that JBJ be around when he was swinging a hot bat.
  19. If Bradley indeed isn't willing to make adjustments, then he is punching his own ticket out of town, kind of like Middlebrooks refusing to play winter ball. After two partial seasons of hitting below .200, he has to know that his way isn't working. I liked what I read about this kid last offseason - how he came to camp early and seemed like he would do whatever it takes to win and keep the CF job. Hopefully, he still has that kind of attitude.
  20. No, not in my opinion Fred. I get as excited about our youngsters as anyone, but I am not one to annoint someone the next best thing based on small sample sizes. I was wondering if you were insisting that he be on the roster to open 2013, rather than being sent down.
  21. Is this the same Bradley who just had to be on the 2013 Opening Day roster after his stellar ST? He may or may not ever be able to hit ML pitching, but I certainly hope the Sox don't give up on him yet.
  22. Point taken. Vazquez is still largely unproven in the majors. That said, going back to the minors and during his short stint in the bigs, his pitch framing ability has been considered to be in the "elite" category, coming from both the scouts and the stat geeks.
  23. When it comes to catchers, it's all about defense. And when I say defense, I mean the way a catcher handles the pitching staff. Throwing out baserunners is important, but overrated. Vazquez and Hanigan are both considered not just good, but elite when it comes to pitch framing. I couldn't care less if they don't hit very well. Anything they give us offensively is gravy, IMO.
  24. Agree with the sentiment here. I'm excited for the new season to start. I've been watching the football playoffs (Go Pats!), but I'm not really much of a football fan. For me, it's all about baseball and the Red Sox. Baseball season cannot start soon enough.
  25. It does seem odd that both are still available, and to me, it doesn't seem like the interest or chatter about either one has been as strong as it usually is for top starters. I really wish they would just go ahead and sign already. LOL As far as Hamels goes, I have nothing against him as a pitcher. But my preference is almost always paying "just money" for players versus paying prospects plus money. From what I understand, Amaro has been rather unreasonable in his demands.
