  1. I can't wait for the spring training here in the Metro NYC area!
  2. The word locally is that the Yankees aren't going after any of the top FA arms - Lester, Shields, Scherzer - which almost assuredly means they will sign one or two of them. ;-) I really can't see them going with Tanaka - Sabathia - Pineda - Nova - Phelps/Whitley/Greene.... Too much age and injury there, not to mention no star power.
  3. I'm late to this thread (and all others, having taken some time off from baseball) but to me, Beckett is the classic 'million dollar arm but 5 cent head' player. He was on when he was interested enough to be on (mostly in odd-numbered years) but was a dick off the field for sure. Retire In Peace.
  4. Never said we were.
  5. Hey, it's the Phillies! Not like he's playing for a real team.....
  6. Not sure you can really judge him based on being injured in a critical part of the body for an entire year. I, too, think he will rebound, simply based on his sheer willpower.
  7. They were both really brought up too soon to fill needs created by injuries/non-signings. They should have spent the year in Pawtucket, then come up 9/1.
  8. I say 'nay' to Tulo. When is the last time he finished a season? Last time he played 150 games was 2009.... We don't the need middle of the IF to be injury-prone. And I'm not a big Ramirez fan. I think he's a little too inconsistent with his play and attitude. Now JJ Hardy, that might be okay. But I'd rather see Xander there. For 3B, how about the Panda? He's only 28 and certainly has the power profile for a 3Bman...
  9. Agree he doesn't have the power to play third. Need a guy who can hit home runs.
  10. Yeah, I wasn't really referring to anyone here, just a general comment on a perception that we've all heard. Seems dumb to eliminate a guy from consideration for the HOF who has had a major impact on 3 World Championship teams just because he doesn't play the field 90% of the time. Some thing that Edgardo Alfonzo has to be the first DH to get in, but I'd argue that Papi has certainly had a bigger impact on his teams and the position than Alfonzo did, although he is generally recognized as the first 'real' DH. The NFL finally broke the kicker barrier, so maybe it will be time for the Hall to do the same in 2020 or so....
  11. But I thought as a DH, he wasn't a player? ;-) For sure, the Sox will have to break their own criteria to put him in the RS HOF if he weren't to get into Cooperstown. But I think he will get in. Both.
  12. Actually, I think the young guys have done ok - Buchholz is the one that has really stunk it up - amazing, considering the opportunity he has to be staff leader (if not ace). But he doesn't have the mental capacity / make-up to be a front-of-the-rotation guy, IMHO. He could be a good 4th or 5th starter, which is a shame because I think he has 1 / 2 stuff. RDLR pitched well last night, I like Kelly's stuff and make-up a lot, and I think Workman can be a 4 - 5 guy. I still need to see more of Webster. It would be nice to pick up a 1 / 2 guy (but please not 'Big Lame' James Shields) but if they could get a 2 - 4 guy or two, I think the rotation might be okay next year, especially if the offense reverts to Red Sox norms. But I may be viewing the pie in the sky and drinking my half-full glass of water while wearing my rose colored glasses here.
  13. Or for any dang old reason, it's an authoritarian state.....! They can do WTF they like. As far as good deal or not, all we've seen of him is a grainy 3:00 minute Youtube video so I'm not going to question the Sox judgement at this point. They've obviously scouted him extensively. Only cost us money, not a player. And the Sox offered Lester $17.5 million a year, not $12 (4/$70), so not sure why he would be any more pissed than he may have been with his offer previously. I'm just wondering if this means they won't be trying to sign Cespedes for post-2015.... I heard this am that we will see Castillo in the majors this year. Might as well, give him some starts in AAA and call him up in mid-September....
  14. Need Allen Craig in that spot, not Kelly Freaking Johnson.
  15. The more I see of Cespedes, the more I like him. I hope the Sox can keep him beyond 2015.
  16. And why is Buchholz still in the game? Is this just a 'screw you, Clay' deal by Farrell?
  17. So Nava gives up on Trouts ball then throws behind Pujols chugging to second? He can be gone too.
  18. And he's not a dick with the media, either. That will help.
  19. Don't know what Buchholz contract status is but no way am I signing him to a long-term deal. He just sucks, never battles and is absolutely horrendous with men on base. Slow as crap too.
  20. Well, Bud certainly helped the Henry-Werner-Lucchino team buy the Sox back in 2003....
  21. Sheesh, I was just thinking that with Victorino out, at least we'd get to see Craig play every day....
  22. Yes, he gets in. Haven't read all of the above - but he has the numbers and was a major part of 3 WS Championships in 10 years. Lives for the big moments. Also very popular with the media - don't discount that - he's the anti-Barry Bonds in that regard.
  23. How will they know about WMB, though, unless they lay him significant minutes for the rest of the year? If they platoon him that won't answer the question.... Not sure what his contract status is (I'm sure he has a couple of years of arbitration coming up) but they need to make a decision one way or the other this off-season. Either play him and see if he can 1) stay healthy and 2) contribute or dump him and let Holt have the job, even though he doesn't really fit the offensive profile of a 3Bman...
  24. Interesting discussion on Buchholz. I agree that the issue seems to be above the shoulders. He never battles or grinds though an inning. If the stuff ain't there, it's more like, hey, too bad, maybe next time.... There aren't a lot of guys that have both the stuff and the psyche. If we could combine the grit of a Peavy with Buchholz's stuff, man, you'd have... Pedro! I think what Buchholz needs, in the short term, is a catcher that will kick his ass when his stuff isn't there and keep him focused, not allow him to wuss out. Vazquez can't do that, he's too new, and Ross, maybe he could but he's out now. Not sure that's really his personality anyway. So the lack of a tough-minded catcher is hurting him right now, too. Where is Crash Davis when we need him?
  25. Ditto re: my 'Too Soon...' vote, I'd probably go B. Interesting that with all the angst on other threads, overall, most people give the trades a passing grade (C or higher, and taking out us fence-sitters ;-). I would have expected a tendency towards failing grades, given the comments throughout the forum. FWIW, I've seen most sports sites giving most of the individual trades a B- or better, and overall, for the bunch of them, B's.... Most pundits seem to think the Sox made a bunch of good moves, overall. Again, FWIW.
