    It really wouldn't, and it wouldn't be risking his job. But yes, almost certainly not happening, sadly.

    This was always going to happen. Every year a player plays above his career average and people get fooled into thinking it'll last. I'd like Jordan to get a chance to show what he can do but there's more chance of me getting called up. I think we'll probably ride with the 1B situation. Pitching is where we will look I think. Apparently we're pestering the Twins at an annoying level. I don't see Duran going anywhere now, though, so I'm not sure what we're trading. The Rule 5 guys are not going to get it done.

    I'll say it until I'm blue in the face, but even if/when we buy, we should trade Chapman. It is too big an opportunity to pass up on.

    I swear some of you just think we only have to decide a trade and it happens. Two huge trades this year so far. You might disagree with one of them but to call him all talk is idiotic.

    Indeed. And would take huge balls to break it by selling.

    Agreed. This deadline is heading right where I feared all along - indecision due to being too good to sell and not good enough to buy.

    If we're in the bottom frame and one run wins it and we've got a guy on 2nd with no outs, I'm bunting.

    I felt the same up until this season. I have mentioned several times in the past that people were overseeing the fact he plays hurt and always shows up. That changed this season. I wasn't pleased with his outburst in Spring Training but understood it after the way the Sox handled the whole situation, but the refusing to play 1B thing and then gleefully suggesting he'll play there for the Giants in the first press conference because 'they're in charge' - F--k him. I'm glad he's gone. You can get away with most things if you show up for your teammates. Once you're not even prepared to do that - away you go.

    100%. And still people will defend it. Bizarre.

    Hard to do that when you refuse to play 1B for your team. 👍

    I think we're probably where a lot (most?) of us thought we were - .500. The run before the ASG was exhilarating and catapulted us, but we're back to what we saw before that. Our schedule is brutal and I think it likely points to more .500. If we really wanted to go for it we needed to get help in immediately and boost us on this harsh run of games we are in the midst of. They didn't because I think they wanted to see who we are after this stretch. And we're showing we are what we've been all year - a young team with multiple highs and lows. But this isn't like other years - we're close. This is a talented team and we're just getting started. If we can flip Gio and Chaman (and others) into pieces ready to go for us next year, we need only a few additions in FA and we're going to challenge for half a decade or more with the core we have.

    I'm not sure that's true any longer. I agree with your other point to someone else that fundamentals are down across the board. In part I believe because they are trying to bring in flexibility to roster building. Cora and Bres mention it over and over and over. Campbell is not a good defender (at least right now) - he needs a position and told it's his - now make yourself great there and force us to play you. Defensive flexibility is going to be no good if you're rubbish in every position. I think they likely thought his bat was good enough to put up with bad defence. But he has huge holes that need addressing over a long period of time.

    “It keeps me active. It keeps my head out of just thinking about the next at-bat,” Devers said. “…I’d rather be on the field than in the cage hitting all the time and thinking about the next at-bat.” Devers comments after the game. He'd rather be on the field, except when The Sox really needed him to be. Good riddance.

    I think they tried to do what they do with all young players and build in flexibility, but that hurt his defensive development. I don't think they did this on purpose.

    I hear you - I understand why people like yourselves feel that way. It just feels too good an opportunity to get something we usually could not get at this kind of price.

    I do genuinely believe they thought they had a superstar with him. Obviously we've had a back and forth on this already and I always lean towards being careful with these guys as the jump is so big as we've seen time and time again. But I feel even stronger that they went crazy fast with Campbell and he has A LOT that needs work still. Your last line feels right on the money.

    I'm really not sure that's true and have a hard time believing that. I think they torpedoed him by moving him around the spots. Or maybe they thought he was better than he was. As an aside - I understand the need for flexibility, but I wish they'd teach these guys their positions and leave them there on times.

    Rule 5 this coming year I think I'm right in saying. So you'd think he'd get a Pirates, CWS kind of a club who will want to go forward with a guy in that position. But yeah, I'd really like to see him get the time here.

    Quality wise I agree, but there's still clearly things to work on with him. He didn't come up and you think - ah he's there, he just needs a little tweak here and there. He couldn't pull the ball at all (or hit certain pitches), and was an appalling defender. He needs a reset and rebuild, not tweaking. That's not happening (nor should it in my view) at the majors.

    Totally agree. I think we're the only ones on this train, however, and I think he's almost certainly getting dealt.

    Well your last sentence offers no crumbs of comfort. I really don't think it was because they thought he was the one most likely to sign, but if it was, it only strengthens my argument. If you don't think he can learn how to be a better, or even passable defender in the minors, and learn to pull the ball and hit the pitches he was struggling with, and lay off the ones he shouldn't be going near, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe we should just get rid of the minors as they're obviously no good to prospects trying to learn. The guy was at sea in the majors. He was brought up too soon.

    Torres was the Cubs No1 prospect and went on to become an all star. Ragans had a season and a bit with the Royals when he had an ERA of 2.90 and 7.6 WAR. Yes he's struggled this year, but was also recently diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear and shut down. If you're telling me we can get pitching like that or a No1 prospect who goes onto be an all star - count me in.
