I think there is equal blame. They did a poor job but Raffy was selfish. And as fans we get caught in the middle and eventually we get screwed. I'll no longer get to see Rafael Devers mash in a Red Sox unform, something I have enjoyed for 7+ years and after the extension I had every reason to believe this would continue for many years. When teams are forced to trade a star the return never matches what they gave up,. Color me skeptical that they will find another Raffy Devers.

Passan: Boston Red Sox Optioning Kristian Campbell
Yaz Fan Since 67 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Oh I know what the discussion is about. And I do support sending Campbell down to work things out. My post was a response to all the love Hamilton is getting, one post after he had one good game, when we've seen him enough to know that he is not a good player and never will be. -
Passan: Boston Red Sox Optioning Kristian Campbell

Yeah I love it when fans make an argument using literally what happened yesterday. We've seen enough of Hamilton to know what he is and more importantly what he is not. And he is not an everyday player. -
When I started to read this I thought your opener was sarcastic. But instead you spelled out my thoughts precisely. This game like all games is about stars. You have to have them. They shipped out a star for nothing and have proven with the list of signings recently (Story, Yoshida, Giolito) that they will probably use this savings (if they use it all) on players who will not be nearly as productive. This lineup does not have one single bat that teams need to account for and has multiple black holes, it's a terrible lineup. Winning is simply not sustainable given this handicap. I too believe he was traded mostly due to his attitude. But again teams coddle stars all the time. Just put him at DH, accept you are overpaying a bit which can be made up elsewhere and understand that you will have a proven very productive DH for years. They won't have to roll the dice on another guy who may not work out. Instead we have a very inconsidtant Yoshida who will file this role which is a big dropoff..

Yeah well color me skeptical that they will reinvest the entire $31 million. And even if they did it would probably end up being a few B players and nobody with the impact of Raffy Devers. Sports is about stars, you need stars to compete at the highest levels. Devers with his faults was a star, a true impact player. One of the very few this team has had for several seasons. And they gave him away for nothing, just as they did with Mookie, while continuing their pattern of being one of lowest paying teams with regard to payroll vs revenue in the entire league. I'm not sure why I'm supposed to accept this after what has been happening for years now.

Idealy yes you want more of a team guy. But again teams put up with diva attitudes from their stars all the time. As for the contract again they were paying only 42% of their revenue on player salaries, which ranked 23rd in the league. It's pretty clear they could have afforded the contract, instead they have decided to remain near the bottom of that list which is pretty much a ranking of how much the teams are committed to winning. When fans of AL East teams are laughing at your team that's never a good sign. They have just written off 2025 and will struggle in 2026 and for the immediate future now.

Again the Sox are 23rd in payroll vs revenue. And that was 2 months ago and included the Devers contract so now they are probably near the bottom. I have no idea how any Sox fan can be OK with this. And it's been going on for years.

Again I clearly remember posters here taking the same position about Mookie. Obviously the diva attitude was not there but poster after poster said they were smart not to put so much money into one player I remember thinking these posters are more knowledgeble than I am so perhaps they are right, they almost had me convinced. Those same posters are very critical of the trade now and have been for a while. When the team moves a star player in his prime over money and attitude it rarely works out for the fan. I get it his attitude pissed people off. But again teams have accepted diva attitudes from their stars for longer than we have been fans. Yes 31 is an overpay for a DH. But we would be foolish to believe that JH will take that money and turn that into comparable talent. So we are left with a lineup without one bat that scares an opponent and a bunch of stiff pitchers in return for a top 10 hitter. I know they are winning now but with this lineup that is somply not sustainable. Raffy was the biggest reason I watch these games, I always pay extra attention when he steps up because he has provided so many magical moments for us. I watched him homer for the 6th game in a row so many times I can recite the call "This has never been done in the history of the Boston Red Sox" "All those great hitters, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice, David Ortiz, none of them did that" still sends chlls down my spine. And now, like Mookie, I've be forced to watch him produce for another team while my team hovers around .500. Fans who wanted him gone because he was a pain in the butt (after the Sox totally bungled the position change discussions), didn't run out a ground ball or didn't talk with reporters appear to be just butt hurt at the expense of actually winning something significant.

Have you checked the standings the last few years as well as this season, Bro? It's as if you are totally unaware that your Boston Red Sox are currently 23rd in MLB in payroll vs revenue at only 42%. Is being 23rd really trying to win or would that be about prioritizing the bottom line? Please answer this question. I think it's foolish to believe things will change and JH will take this Devers money and turn it into a better player. No the smart bet is he will continue to pocket a good bit of this new money continue his trend of profitability over winning. I have no idea why any fan would make a post such as you just did. Last place, ,500, and and very likely a losing record in 2025 with low expectations for '26 is where we are now. It didn't used to be this way. .

Hi Kimmi, haven't seen you in a while (I lurk a lot). I get what you are saying but sorry losing a player like this over money and a diva attitude, when teams accept this to keep a star player happy for generations is a little hard to take after the Mookie trade and all the other moves meant to save money and not build a winner. So what if they rid themselves of a very expensive DH? it's not like I expect them to put that money into a winning offer for Vlad Guerrero or anything like that. Instead we will suck, again, because the owner does not care about winning. As a 60 year Sox fan iInever expected this to happen.

OK I'll agree Raffy was a pain in the ass this season. And I don't like the lack of hustle either. But teams have accepted prima donna behavior from their stars in all sports for a century. The key is don't get butt hurt, like you are, panic and give away a key to your team for nothing in return. You appear to be happy that our team has gone from .500 to sucking overnight. All because you are butt hurt that he didn't hustle down the first base line. I would suggest you grow up and look at the bigger picture, we now suck and have no hope for being good again anytime soon.

There's plenty wrong when a team with huge revenue continues to trade their best players in salary dumps.. Players who go on to have great success for those teams while the players we got in return sucked. How any Sox fan can be OK with this trade is totally baffling to me. It's as if you still are on board with the Mookie trade.

And trading your best player who has proven to be consitantly productive year after year because he didn't run out a ground ball is beyond dumb.

They traded a top 10 hitter in his prime for little return. There is no positive spin to this and people need to just stop with that nonsense. The reaction around the league makes it pretty clear that the Boston Red Sox got screwed in this trade and it's not even close. If you go to the game look up at managment and let your feelings known. If you really cared you'd stop going to the games to send JH a message.

You and I have watched them all season. We both know that number is skewed, they had a few big run scoring games but they score 3 or less far far more often. And of course with 53 RBIs in 72 games Raffy was a big reason for that run total, something you refuse to acknowledge even afer it has been pointed out to you. Raffy, Bregman and for a month Campbell and Ayala have been the most productive everyday players in that entire lineup. Now none of them are playing or productive.

Think they are capable of winnng 2-1 games all season? Because that will be what will be required as this lineup is pathetic. Please present an argument that a lineup like this can be a playoff team. The Giants are correct. They gave up nothing and acquired one of the top 10 hitters in baseball. The league is lauging at us, we just made Garrett Cole smile. Think about that.

So fans are butt hurt at a perceived lack of hustle. Meanwhile this team will struggle to score runs and Raffy will blow up in San Francisco. Get over your hurt feelings and take a look at how your team got much worse, with little return, literally overnight right after he hit a huge HR.

I clearly remember after Betts was traded reading post after post here saying this was the smart move not to tie so much money into one player, they had no choice but to pass on a big deal for Mookie for the future ability to complete a roster. Those same posters years later are critical of the trade and of course the return. This feels the same. You don't trade one of the better hitters in Red Sox history. If you pro-rate his 2020 season to 150 games played he has averaged 106 RBIs a season for his career, including the first season when he barely played, and is currently at 58 RBIs through 73 games. His career OPS is .858. He was sold every single year and the lineup went from questionable to downright pathetic. f*** the Red Sox. I know he was a pain in the ass but you just don't replace that sort of production with rookies who haven't done a damned thing at the MLB level.

Have you seen the lineup he is working with? It's a miracle they have gotten the runs that they have. Such a weak hitting lineup with nothing resembling a cleanup hitter and nothing after that. I am so done with Trevor Story.

I'm glad you posted that. I had been reading that he was arguing balls and strikes and was not on the mound, As it was a stolen base attempt a missed call there is somewhat understandable and we all know you can't leave the mound to argue balls and strikes.. But it's clear here that he was still on the mound when the ump came out to confront him.

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
Yaz Fan Since 67 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
I'm not trading a player with a lifetime OPS of .854. They'll figure it out, I'm also not trading Duran as one could argue he is the driving force on this team and his speed puts enormous pressure on the defense. Players like that don't come around too often.
