There is no question that Cordero is a better "deal" than Mookie. So is a 2003 Civic at $100 over a brand-new BMW at $500,000. Which would you rather drive?

What's happened to Valdez, who was pitching a lot better than those who have been run out there in the last few games?

The one thing Cordero did that was positive was ensuring he wouldn't lead off the 3rd.

I don't think he was asking that anyone feel sorry for them. He was asking whether a boss (in any profession) should be able to treat you like property.

There was a problem a couple of hundred years ago in this country with the notion that workers were owned, and could be sold. Not sure why that system is reconstituted on the upper levels. But not many workers for, say, GE wake up in the morning to discover that they've been reassigned to Xerox and need to show up for work on Monday. Maybe the next CBA will address this?

Yup. (Although I will concede that it teaches a valuable life lesson: that there are many folks out there of no great skill or intelligence, who get off on exercising arbitrary power over others.)

I think it does not. And blessedly, many institutions (e.g., the military, and most universities combatting frat-boy mentality) are beginning to agree with me.

Hazing is illegal now in the military, at most universities, and in most pro-sports. It is now recognized as the stupid, juvenile, and hypocritical activity it always has been. It is particularly prevalent among sexually-repressed homophobes who find themselves in the company of fellow gay-bashers and pedophiles (e.g., late 20th c American prep-schools and fraternities). Time for it to go.

Betts is a good fit for any team. If he's not, they need to change the composition of the team.

Maybe we talked of this before. I've heard OF those rumors, but don't know any details. I liked Cabrera a lot; he always gave really good and smart interviews. I remember he was friends with Manny and was adamant that the friction between him and (was it writers?) was because Manny was not entirely comfortable in his second language.

Just heard his comment about celebrations following HRs (he's all for it) and calling out pitchers who get butt-hurt and through at batters in retaliation. Never liked him much. Now I'm a fan.

Is the pitcher the cut-off man on that? Shouldn't he be backing up the plate? (Ah, announcers just answered that. He was basically pissed so just stood around getting in the way of the play.)

Ah, thanks. I had thought they always had that, both offense and defense (although if you only allow man-to-man defense, there would be no reason for it, I suppose, as there would be no way you could then get to the paint without being on anyone.).

Did you see Verducci's article in SI whining that the shift should be outlawed because it so hurt Jay Bruce's career (a .244 career hitter). I love the logic: he's slow, and can't hit to all fields, doesn't have too much power, so IT'S NOT FAIR!!!! I suppose by the same logic: there are a lot of AA players who cannot hit curve balls. THEREFORE, the curve ball needs to be banned. Or was the whole damn article written tongue-in-cheek? (If so, just call me the usual names and move on.)

I'm sure if I had been told that by the end of April, the RS would be sharing its divisional position in the standings with the Mets, KC, the Reds and the Mariners, I would have sighed deeply, and drawing on decades of disappointment (ignoring the last 15 years or so), have shaken my head sadly and said: "Figures."
