  1. Ha! You need to revise your comment, old-timer! Modern weather prediction is astounding. It ain't like the old days, as you may remember: "Sunny today. And oh yes, later this morning? Maybe Hurricane Carol will hit ..."
  2. (Damn! I should have written this: every detail applies!)
  3. Along with guys that let the batters rake!
  4. OMG, I thought, given the thread, you were talking about James Taylor and Keith R., but when you said he looked good, I knew I had misread the reference.
  5. !!!!
  6. That is, I think, exactly right. I don't play fantasy sports, and don't understand why anyone does. (Don't explain it! I'm not saying I'm right; I'm just saying it's among things I don't want to bother to care about.). But that is very likely why I am opposed to 'complete rebuild', trading away popular players, and despise 'tanking' in any form.
  7. Problem is that the HOF also serves as the "History of Baseball" museum. And 'history' is no longer considered to be about the 1%ers, any more than regular history is about kings and queens. Not really sure how MLB should negotiate these conflicting demands, but certainly keeping players like Barry Bonds, Clemens and Rose [whom I despise!] out answers nothing.
  8. I don't think 5% of the visitors to the HOF would understand this exchange!
  9. South? Oh good. Then you won't have to worry about all that burdensome crap they have in Canada: you know, wage protections, health care, benefits, functioning social services. And you'll be able to buy all the guns you want.
  10. Yeah, that Mookie stiff! We sure showed him. 'Refusing to give the team a discount!' HOW DARE HE!
  11. Try vipboxtvDOTse
  12. Agree entirely. And it's time, with some reluctance, to exercise the IGNORE function on those posters who, despite their knowledge, seem only interested in starting arguments.
  13. Exactly. I have never forgiven Curt Gowdy, in a game with the RS (rarely) ahead by a run, talking about his wife planting petunias. Then, an inning later, as the opposing team hit a walk-off 3-run homer, BRIEFLY (which almost never happened with Gowdy!) losing his composure and saying "Oh no and it's gone!" (Why are my brain cells tied up with crap like this instead of focusing on where I left my glasses?)
  14. Those who set ticket prices are given one principal charge: Set the prices such that you maximize gate revenue. They would make the exact same calculations whether player payroll is $300million or 10cents.
  15. Exactly what would you like them to talk about after a 1-1 pitch in the dirt of a 7-1 game in the 6th inning? dWAR? FanGraphs ratings? the trade deadline? launch angles? ...
  16. Come on. You know enough about the economics of baseball to know that ticket prices are determined by formulae that have nothing whatsoever to do with player salaries. It's silly to imagine that if they paid players 1/10 as much as they do, then suddenly $6 box seats would be available the day of the game and hot dogs would cost a quarter.
  17. I know I know. RS only up 9 in the 9th. Call me a Pollyanna, but I don't think they're out of it yet. I think they can still win this one.
  18. You'll have to ask that question of ownership, or of that apparently significant portion of the fan-base who are fine with losing the best player in the league along w/ anyone else whose dWAR or FanGraphs rating isn't up to snuff.
  19. As for tonight, I "wish, but not with hope ..."
  20. I must not have been clear. I specifically noted (or tried to!) that I was not arguing against free agency. The 'out-sourcing' comparison I meant was to the modern trading away or failing to retain veteran players because one could get the same or similar production more cheaply.
  21. Well, that's speculative, since we have no idea what the future will hold (unlike the 0-3 start this year, or the dismal record last year, which are facts). But sure: I followed the RS through the 50s and later without losing enthusiasm, despite some horrendous years. I kept following them because I was familiar with the players (and I'm not arguing here for the old authoritarian system; even following free-agency, there was always continuity from year to year). I would feel the same way if I were told, say, by my boss that they have fired a number of co-workers because they can get the same work done cheaper by out-sourcing it.
  22. And that Mookie guy? But yes, I admit, as a RS fan, I'd rather watch Beni and JBJ struggle than watch players I've never heard of outhit them by 30 points or so.
  23. Except that 'drastic turnover' (i.e., getting rid of the majority of players ordinary fans like to see play), is exactly what got the RS into this situation.
  24. Right. And even more important, the average long-term fan (like me) wants to follow players they know and have followed. That's a helluva lot more important than whether they win a championship w/ a bunch of no-name mercenaries (how is the Marlins fan base doing?) This is the entertainment business, not an investment company. I don't give a crap what their balance sheet looks like. I just want to see players I'm familiar with. If they win, great. If not, so what? (and for those of you who claim I am thus not a 'true fan', fine. But I've been watching them since the 50s).
  25. Ok. Then you don't get what you pay for! I just find it hard to get involved with a team that (1) sucks, and (2) in order to suck, has gotten rid of all the players I've followed over the past few years.
