    Must have been Steve Lyons, no? I say to Verdugo, GO FOR IT! I was very negative about this guy when he was signed, but his play has completely won me over.

    The fan obsession with E-rod's "body language" or "lack of emotion" says more about fandom than athletics. Not every athlete has to charge into the dugout in rage after a K, throwing bats around and smashing things, a la Keven Youkilis before Manny offered to punch him out for doing it. Getting excited, jumping up and down, pounding one's chest, and screaming is entertaining (and sports is, after all, entertainment), but has absolutely nothing to do with effective performance.

    Oh yeah, the manager punted. Happens all the time, especially in 5-game series. One game? Doesn't mean crap when you only have to win 3. If it were 7 games, doubtless he would have punted two or three.

    Blessedly I missed this discussion. So the RS make the post-season by thumping their arch rivals in a win or go home game, allowing only two runs, playing extremely well on defense (from what I saw), and now is the time for some posters to call for Cora's head? Can't we argue instead about Grady Little and Posada's pop-up? EDIT: OMG I see we are. OK. How about whether Wakefield should have pitched to Boone or how long Lonberg should have been left in in 1967? Maybe Yaz should have tried to go left field in 1978 against Gossage?

    There are always excuses for why a business doesn't do well, just as there are for when each of us does something wrong. There are counter-arguments too, like "a good portion of Tampa's revenue (and apparent interest in their team) comes from fans of other teams." I suppose one could say that's a shrewd business decision in some sense (contrary to my argument above). The American business model? why pay your employees when you can mooch off the employees of your competitor?

    I drank it exclusively during my drinking days when I couldn't afford the high-end stuff (which in those days was Schlitz). Maybe that's why those days were cut short decades and decades ago.

    Iglesias! Right. I forgot about that. The discussion of what constitutes the post-season seemed relevant only from a stats point of view, but it does have a substantial bearing on the games, as he can play tonight, and, win or lose, his season is over.

    Hey. I have always believed that what one does in the privacy of one's home, however perverse, however revolting to rational civilized citizens, is one's own business.

    Moon's question is on stats: I believe the WC is considered 'post-season', but tie-breaker games or play-ins are considered statistically as regular season, giving a season with 163 games.

    Yes, I know that. But 5GG is correct, I think. There is never an argument about large contracts in this crowd that doesn't get on a roll, gather up residual snow, and end up as the base for a teetering moral snow man. (E.g., e.g., several comments above deriding players who just 'go for the money').

    You could make that argument. You could also argue that film stars are paid too much and therefore you won't go to the movies. Why not direct your wrath of overpaid workers to the CEO's, whose businesses you subsidize despite their millions in salaries and stock options.
