Ha! That's why my students were not allowed to cite "Google" or, their favorite "THE" dictionary. (That said, I and every academic I know uses those resources and Wiki all the time! They just aren't definitive.)

That is not quite correct. You can be sarcastic without being ironic (as in the above example). Although it is true, on the internet, the two terms are used indiscriminately.

I think we need to distinguish sarcasm from irony. The way I used to explain it to my students was: You ask me why you got a certain grade, and I respond: BECAUSE YOU'RE a F**KING IDIOT! If you got an F, that remark is sarcastic; if you got an A, it's ironic. (I'm not sure they completely got it, but at least it made an impression.)

Not me. I don't want real sports to be like fantasy sports. I want to follow human beings and see how the same humans do year to year. Thus even after players are gone, I will tend to follow their careers (like Mookie, Boggs, Roger, Lester, Manny [OF COURSE!], Ellsbury, Eck ... ).

Right. That's the point we were trying to make. (They weren't uncommon in minor leagues not too long ago, right? Seems to me my brother and I went to one in Portland ... AAA then ... and it was great--like being kids again. And even with an hour drive, we got back at a reasonable hour.)

When we were kids (some of us!), didn't games start at 8PM? And, even as kids, we could stay up long enough to listen to them?

Anyone who has watched a ST game will agree that the runaway winner is the pitch clock! OOPS. Did I speak too soon? Are they not using it yet? (I had assumed they were). In any case, the games I've seen are showing pitches generally about 12-15 secs. Is this just because young pitchers are used to clocks in the minors?

Think like a fan (a customer). Some of us don't like to see the product change each year because Pantone invents or declares a new Color of the Year.

I knew about ERA more than 60 years ago, as did every baseball fan or casual player I knew, and the calculations were no more difficult than batting average (I realize long division may remain a mystery for some fans). I also knew how to add up Wins and Losses, although in those days, it was a lot easier to count W's than L's.

Exactly. As I've pointed out before, name me one fan (including yourself) who ever put money down or attended a game because they wanted to see the fWAR or dWAR race (you don't need to disparage me for not knowing the difference. I don't. And don't care.) As for HRs being boring, think Sosa and Bonds, the race that saved baseball.

I'm sorry for your experience and esp. that of your friend. I've never been to Baltimore, but one of my best friends grew up there, went to grad school at Hopkins and LOVES it. So much for anecdotes. I've lived in 3 major us cities NOLA, NYC (in the 70s, before it was gentrified) and now LA. And everything you say about Baltimore I was warned about of those places with equally hideous tales. I have never had a problem with anyone, even though I take public transportation and walk alone at all hours of the night (well, less so these days!). I confess, that's due to a number of factors: I'm male; I do not frequent bars; pure blind luck; plus (I'm told) I look like I'm a borderline street-person.

Problem is by then, it's often too late. Not sure what the stats are when voters actually get to vote on stadium proposals, but I think they generally? or very often? vote against. I did finally find an article on referenda on stadiums, subsidies, improvements, etc.: I quote only one sentence in the conclusion: " The retrospective evidence about the economic impact of professional sports teams and facilities on local economies suggests that at best they have no economic impact and, as much recent evidence shows, at worst they have a negative economic impact."

You're right, of course. And as far as the owners are concerned, I am likely now in 'Aunt Polly' mode, when Tom protests he didn't deserve to be whupped: "This makes up for all the times I should have whupped you and didn't." Each stadium situation is different, but the one commonality I've noticed in those I've read up on is that the taxpayers get screwed--through various means such as paying for it outright, 'guaranteeing' a certain gate, or having the team/stadium ownership group lease the land for $1 a year ...

Yes, but when the players give something to support them (the supposed 'millionaires'), the league (the 'billionaires') will make a great show of matching it. If the league really gave a crap about the local community, they would insist on paying property taxes on their ballparks.
