  1. Once again, my rapier-like wit is blunted by the whetstone of the world. The RS will be turning their season around due to the weather preventing them from losing. (Or maybe it's your rapier-like wit blunted on the stone of my mind.)
  2. Just checked NOAA. There's a good chance the RS will be turning it around tonight.
  3. I have to disagree with that: he hit well, and fielded well. What more was he supposed to do? If he didn't 'fit', that's on the other players who didn't perform as well, not on him. (Now a .180 hitting Peguero, THERE's a great fit for the 2015 Sox!)
  4. Yeah, you're right. My bad. Sorry. Must be the frustrations of the season; I keep wondering if Gary Geiger is still out there, or if Don Buddin is going to do something interesting at short.
  5. Wait. Gonzo was a disaster? You mean a guy who consistently hit .300 wherever he played? (What's he hitting now, around .350?)
  6. Pretty much over his left shoulder after Hamilton put a charge into one of his floaters.
  7. $200/mil (Is that their payroll?) a year to "set things up" for two years down the road?? That may work, since anything can happen (e.g., 2013), but it doesn't sound like a coherent strategy to me. Exactly where is all this cash going that's supposed to pay dividends down the road?
  8. I don't get that. Nava may be done, but at least he has shown over the past few years that he is or was once capable of hitting. Peguero has proven with several years of very consistent performances that he is not. What's the point? Play Bradley. Play anyone.
  9. But if "underperformance" is found across the board, isn't that a condemnation of the manager/coaching staff or perhaps the FO who constructed the team under the delusion or hope that everything would go right (e.g., 2013)?
  10. well, $10 million/year will only get you so much.
  11. 90s? That was heaven compared to late 50s and early 60s: the great ones--Gary Geiger, Ike Delock, and Pa-puh-pumpsy Green.
  12. On the other hand, if you don't think a reliever can get the job done in that situation, that guy should not be on the team.
  13. Oh well, Matt Barnes wasn't playing real well for the Clippers either.
  14. No one catches with two hands anymore. On the other hand, Castillo did not catch with one either.
  15. Ouch. Is that Cy Young on the mound?
  16. It's not that they're not coming through in RISP, it's that so many are hitting badly period: Ortiz, Nava, Swihart, Bradley, [Craig], Napoli, Victorino--all well below what was expected.
  17. Farrell also assures us that hiring his friend Willis as pitching coach is "not about hiring friends," because, well, hiring friends is, I suppose, NEVER about hiring friends.
  18. I don't believe Craig, as a veteran, can be sent down. It's keep him or waive him. (Not sure of Nava's status on that score, but I agree, he still has value--he came back last eyar after a stint at Pawtucket, and that may be the best option now. Obviously, being in the lineup every 3 days or so is not working.)
  19. WS was a matter of everything, miraculously, going right. Looks like the construction of the team last year and this was ALSO based on the notion that everything will go right: JBJ will replace Ellsbury, Nava will hit .300, so will Ortiz and Pedroia, so will Victorino, pitching will be clutch, Boggaerts will hit .380, Koji will come out of nowhere and dominate, scrap-heap veterans will return to form (Craig, a.k.a. Cameron). Wishful thinking may well get 3 last place finishes in 4 years.
  20. Well, they're eating it one way or another. It would be better to pay someone to hit .150 for another team than to pay them to hit for you.
  21. Enough already. It's pointless to imagine Nava (whom I've always liked) or Craig is going to turn things around magically. I believe Nava can be sent down, correct? (actually, he wouldn't refuse, since it would essentially mean the end of his career); Craig can be released. Their value right now is at its lowest-- that is, unless they continue to play. Bradley needs a final shot. Even his anemic .200 average from last year looks formidable compared to what these guys are giving.
  22. Agree entirely. Alas, there are always underperforming veterans (like Craig or Johnny 'winning finds me' Gomes) to do the same thing at 10 times the cost.
  23. JBJ is hitting .340 in Pawtucket. Why is he still there?
  24. So exactly what has Craig done to earn his new role as everyday player? Outhit Steven Drew?
  25. So why, with a RHP, do you replace Ramirez with the .150 hitting righty, Craig? I realize Nava has been bad, but no one has been "Craig-bad."
