  1. Fans are not obliged to have a non-s*** attitude. Nor are they obliged to follow moral lectures by other fans.
  2. Fans are under no obligation to "make the effort."
  3. That's four batters without a hit! Not a bad start.
  4. To do that, we'll have to get to the offense, which so far, does not look likely.
  5. Rain, I would think yes (at least, it stands to reason that that's true). But mist and fog, etc., no. I imagine the psychological factor may be more important, as hitters likely assume that the ball won't travel as far when things are wet, and consequently ...
  6. The problem with that theory is (1) a wet ball is harder to control, and (2) contrary to popular belief, damp humid air is lighter and provides less resistance than dry air, so equally well hit balls will travel farther.
  7. Looks to be a long, frustrating, and soggy game if they get it in at all.
  8. But the memory is a curious thing. I too remember distinctly having our team get fired up, and consequently getting absolutely crushed. And I remember coasting through games we all thought in despair we had no chance of winning, only to find ourselves miraculously ahead. And getting fired up for a tennis match only to lose 6-0. But in general, when we had more talent than our opponents, we won. When we didn't, we lost. And when we came through in a big moment, we called that 'clutch', and when we failed, we called that 'choking'. And that each of these events seemed at the time and sometimes for decades to be Valuable Life Lessons, which of course had absolutely no bearing on how life turned out in the end.
  9. May be a day of rest today, or a long and frustrating wait for the remnants of Hurricane Nate to go through.
  10. Since in the one game I saw Devers play in the minors, he made several incredibly athletic plays, I don't worry. The errors I've seen him make since seem (note "seem") routine and easily correctible mistakes--glove not in position, bad throws. These again "seem" to me easily fixable. Also, my favorite image of Frank Malzone (the only one locked in my memory), is a fairly common one, alas, of him standing near third and looking over his shoulder at a ball that just went through his legs.
  11. You mean by taking half the season off as his team came within a couple of games of missing the post-season and then by pitching 7 good innings in the playoffs, he didn't have that childish confrontation with Eck?
  12. Yeah, that's tough. I doubt you'll have this problem again, at least this year. Me? I'm going for a ride in the rain. I'm sure my astute analysis of the game, the season, and the inner workings of the front office won't be affected by not seeing what happens on the field.
  13. NOAA says showers "mainly before 2pm." Radar images look like all of this will pass by game-time or thereabouts.
  14. Mental blunders, a (undocumentable) ho-hum attitude, decline by top 8? -- they won the division with such supposed flaws, and these had nothing to do with the two playoff losses. The problem was starting pitching. SInce RS got two of the top pitchers available in the past couple of seasons (Price and Sale), have a Cy Young winner in Porcello, a serviceable 4 (Pomeranz),it's difficult to see exactly what is so obviously "wrong" with the team.
  15. So I guess those who would fire D think that getting Sale was obviously a terrible move, that Pablo should have been cut earlier so that Devers could have spent another year in AA, and that to replace Papi, he should have picked up one of the many many HoF hitters who were available?
  16. Except for maybe those two pitches and the 9 runs.
  17. Well, the good news is that when your pitching sucks and your hitting sucks, the dumb-ass managerial decisions (ph'ing lefties against a guy who holds them to around .100) and defensive lapses really don't hurt you.
  18. Can't blame Hernandez for those last two swinging K's.
  19. Yup. Can't have lefties up there when you've got hitters like Marrero on the bench.
  20. He must have gotten promoted from AA.
  21. Well, that's pretty much that.
  22. Maybe. But it doesn't strike me as either a radical or a ridiculous idea to suggest that one of your best hitters should start over one of your worst.
  23. Marrero. Deven Marrero. A .210 hitter. Over Devers. That's Marrero. Not Doug Mientkiewicz. Deven Marrero. Did JF get the names mixed up? I mean ... they are similar: Deven/Devers.
  24. Young, Marerro, and even Hanley instead of Devers?? How is that possible?
  25. Most of the thousands of college freshmen I've known gave up acting like ten-year-olds when they got there. ("Hey look at me! I learned a swear word!")
