He's been the backup catcher for six different teams. It's not like he was blocked by McCann.

Compared to what Sabathia is making for similar production, Dempster looks like a steal.

If we were willing to give Napoli 3 years at $13 million per to play first base, 5 years at $15 million per seems reasonable for McCann to play catcher.

All of those guys have major questions marks or are a ways away. McCann could always transition to first base or DH, so he wouldn't be blocking anyone.

I could see McCann getting a deal similar to the 5 year/$75 million Yadier Molina got. I would prefer to sign him for less, but he could be used as a DH as he gets older.

And if Brian McCann wants too expensive a contract, we could sign Carlos Ruiz. There are a lot of free agent catchers who I'd rather have than Saltalamacchia.
