  1. It's been what, nearly two years now since he was a top of the rotation starter? He was never a control pitcher. He was always a guy who relied on strikeouts, so I'm not sure how he's going to get back to the type of pitcher he was without the ability to be a power pitcher anymore. I wouldn't trade Lester right now, he has value as a #5 starter and you can never have enough pitching. In the offseason, I would definitely trade him if we got anything valuable. Because we can replace him with a free agent.
  2. Sounds like MLB might have a pretty strong case against A-Rod, who continues to piss off the Yankees. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/i-team/sources-mlb-cut-deal-rodriguez-article-1.1398168#ixzz2Yzgk6lSh

  4. The Marlins took Braulio Lara in the Rule 5 draft (5.71 ERA in Advanced A last year as a 23 year old). That's how the Rule 5 draft works, bad teams select these guys and then just throw s*** at the wall and see what sticks.
  5. For the record, our remaining prospects who will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft next year include Bogaerts, Cecchini, Ranaudo, Brentz, Workman, Almanzar and Hazelbaker. Workman's the only one currently on the 40-man roster. I wouldn't be surprised to see us include Brentz, Almanzar or Hazelbaker in a trade as well.
  6. Exactly. There's more like a 5% chance that this guy becomes a productive player at the major league level. Either this guy fails to become a decent player, and we lose nothing because he sucks. Or he becomes a decent player and we lose nothing because we would have lost him to the Rule 5 draft anyways. He wasn't worth protecting on the 40-man roster over decent prospects like Bogaerts who will also be Rule 5 eligible this offseason.
  7. For the posters who are less knowledgeable about prospects, here's a write up from Alex Speier. http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2013/07/12/what-the-red-sox-gave-up-in-outfielder-brandon-jacobs/
  8. To clarify, there's probably about a 33% chance a team would have taken Jacobs in the Rule 5 draft and kept him. There's a close to 100% chance a team would have taken him.
  9. Or the Mets for that matter. There's about a 95% chance Jacobs will never be a productive major league player, he can't hit Advanced A pitching and his defense is just atrocious. And on top of that, there's probably a 33% chance we would have lost him to the Rule 5 draft had we not traded him. It speaks volumes that there's one Red Sox fan who's agreeing with jackso on this.
  10. This sums it up rather nicely.
  11. If the Red Sox could get anything of value for Lester, I'd trade him in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I think that ship may have sailed. He's not a bad #5 starter, and there's relatively little risk in a one year deal. But if Lester keeps losing velocity, he cold implode at any time.
  12. Since you didn't get the hint - yes. Anyone with half a brain would be surprised. He can't hit advanced A pitching and he's not even a top 20 prospect in our system. This is yet another example of your complete lack of knowledge when it comes to prospects.
  13. This is why it's difficult to take you seriously. Prior to the Red Sox trading him, he was a nobody. A 22 year old who's hit .249/.327/.422 in Single A. The Red Sox trade him and suddenly he has realistic potential of becoming a 20/20 hitter.
  14. Jacobs hasn't been a relevant prospect for a couple of years now. He's probably not one of our top 20 prospects, Sox Prospects has one of the more updated lists and they have him ranked 36th. We essentially gave up nothing.
  15. Thornton's trending the wrong way and he's really struggled against righties this year to the tune of a .368 wOBA. But we acquired him for basically nothing, we would have lost Brandon Jacobs in the Rule 5 draft. And the White Sox are even paying for some of his salary.
  16. He's a centerfielder, which is just as valuable as a shortstop.
  17. Byron Buxton should be the best prospect in baseball. He doesn't have the power of Bogaerts, but he's a legit 5 tool player with plus speed.
  18. Yeah, it's just arguing in circles. Every argument for scoring runs is countered by an equal argument for preventing runs in a real world scenario where a team doesn't have the option of only doing one or the other. And every argument for preventing runs is countered by an equal argument for scoring runs.
  19. By this logic, preventing the other team from scoring first is just as important.
  20. Alright, in your hypothetical world were games are 0-0 and you only have the option of scoring a run or preventing a run, scoring a run is more important. In the real world, scoring and preventing runs are just as important.
  21. The deadline to sign these players is today at 5pm, I'll update the list afterwards.
  22. It would be awesome if Doubront could keep this up and slot in as our #3 starter behind Buchholz and Lackey.
  23. Preventing a run and scoring a run are just as valuable. You can't win a 0-0 ballgame, but you can lose a 0-1 ballgame.
  24. Bogaerts is pretty athletic, I could see him at third or even in left field.
