  1. 1. There is no objective evidence that this team is anything but mediocre. 2. To get to 93 wins we would have to play .629 baseball for the rest of the way. That translates to nearly a 102 win season. 3. Our pitching remains 12th in the AL out of the 14 teams. Thats not a formula for a 102 win season or .629 baseball for any sustained length of time. 4. We have to climb over six teams to get first place and four teams to reach the WC (second WC). Some of those teams are probably better than we are: the Rays and the Angels come to mind. 5. Although we have many games left within the ALE, all of those teams right now are better than we are and should be expected to win the majority of the games against us since we are a last place team. You are what your record says you are (Parcells).
  2. Are you going to be saying the same thing on July 4? Aug 1? Sept 1? It will be mathmatically possible for us to make the playoffs for a long time, but it would also represent further stupidity for our FO to cash in their chips at the trade deadline for an eventuality that is so unlikely. Yeah. Thats right. Lose tonite and we should get realistic about this and start planning for NEXT YEAR. Mediocre teams rarely make the playoffs; nor do they deserve it.
  3. Just noticed your tag line. RSFFL should probably head off to the bank early this week to apply for the loan he will need to complete his promise.
  4. You are kidding, right? Because its all relative. We win+they win=we remain in last place far out of a playoff run. We lose+they win= we get so far behind that catching them (and there are a lot of them) becomes magical thinking. Yeah, its June. In two weeks it will be July. Are you guys going to say then "hey, its only July"? There is, unfortunately, a point at which its time to stop pretending we have a realistic shot at the playoffs. That time is fast approaching.
  5. I agree 100% Jung. Lose tonite and its time to start plotting for next year. I volunteer to start the offseason thread. We simply cannot catch all the teams ahead of us if we get even one more game behind. Therefore, lose tonite and we should become big time sellers of the deadwood on the team but NONE of our prospects-zero. They are all big games for us now.
  6. All the ALE teams are currently ahead in their games. For me that makes tonite a "must win" game because if we fall any farther behind at all IMO our fate is sealed. We won't catch all those teams ahead of us in that case.
  7. Bard is under team control until 2016, and is an elite relief pitcher. He WAS an elite relief pitcher. I don't think he is any more.
  8. The explanation will be phrased in some sort of adminspeak. Excuses about being selective in how the team uses its limited resources and how the asking price would not provide "value" to the team. That sort of thing. We have all seen it before.
  9. Only if we can sign Garza to a 3-4 year deal. No one and a half year rentals for anyone of value.
  10. I am not contesting the fact that Hamels is better. His ERA will go up, probably by somewhat more than .25 because he is playing in the AL and in the ALE. And yes, the park does have something to do with it as well, thought its not the most important factor. I would rather have Hamels; on the other hand, I would rather have both Hamels and Shields. I think Shields is a FA too.
  11. You remind me of the kid who has to get the newest toy just because its new. Guess what: sometimes the older toys work better. Until such time as you offer me objective proof, not personal opinion, of which statistics absolutely are the best, I will keep using my collection of stats and you can use yours. Deal?
  12. I realize that my protest is more symbolic than anything else. I know that I am a poppyseed in the bakery of life. Still, I would love to see a half empty Fenway Park as a means to embarass John Henry. I don't think he could ignore that.
  13. Duquette got it started; Epstein finished the job. That is a matter of fact. I never said Epstein sucked as a GM; I think he was mediocre. As to how these two produced a winner: "Even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut"
  14. I guess I am not understanding you. If Hamels pitched in a league where there is a DH, his ERA would be higher, right? The use of the DH does make a difference. Right now the AL is scoring about a quarter of a run per game more than the NL. So if you add that .25 to Hamels' ERA its up to 3.64. He is still better than Shields, but not by much, as I said.
  15. Crawford is overpaid, but you guys have given up on him too soon IMO. I think he is going to contribute in a positive way to the team, once he is healthy.
  16. There is no doubt that Duquette was even worse than Epstein. That does not make Epstein a good GM. When you are compared to someone who is incompetent, unless you are also totally incompetent, you are bound to look good.
