He isn't getting the contract he wants. There will always be some resentment on his part if he is "forced" to sign a contract worth "just" $125M over five years. He thinks, apparently, that he is worth much more. He isn't. Because there will always be resentment on his part I agree with S5: this is the offer today; its reduced by $1M at midnight and at every midnight. Let him sign somewhere else. Its time to look at other alternatives.

I agree....within reason. If the going rate for my profession is $100,000 at my experience and proficiency level, is it reasonable for me to hold out for $150,00 ad nauseam and become impatient with the group offering the job? There is a point at which reason should prevail, and JD Martinez and Borass have gone WELL beyond that point. They have even gone beyond simple greed. There are no metrics at all that support more than $125M and 5 years. He just WANTS more. Both those guys are greedy weasels.

No one is going to stop watching just because of the BS attitude of jackasses like JD Martinez. He wants to be paid FAR MORE than he is worth, apparently. He is not just trying to get market value, obviously. He has been offered "market value", and he wants more. Just greed. He is a GOOD player in his prime, not a great player. And in 6-7 years he will no longer be in his prime. He epitomizes...defines...the word greed. And yes, I do hold that against him.

JD isn't worth 6 x150. Period. He is barely worth 5x125. If he wants to sit out half a year I will gladly buy him a beer and watch some baseball with him. Baseball is a strange and unpredictable game. Who knows who will really produce this year. I know we had a lot of guys underproducing last year. If our pitching is solid we can compete with the Yankees this year WITHOUT Martinez. Let him sit it out......

Kudos to Dempster for setting his priorities correctly, whatever they were-obviously the top priority was not money, nor should it ever be unless you are starving or homeless.

I agree with you. If we end up signing Martinez I hope the fans give him a very loud chorus of boos at the home opener.

I stand corrected: its not $300,000-its $545,000 for 2017 and more next year. Guess we will see these poor guys rummaging through the bins at Goodwill, what with that paltry sum. Jeesh......G......R......E........E............D! Its not guys earning reasonable amounts that I have a beef with: its jackasses like JD Martinez and his pal Borass who have been made a reasonable offer and who are holding out to try to rob the bank that I have a beef with. And Hosmer. Sure, negotiate for what is reasonable, but don't be an ass about it.

Correct. And they might have to "settle for" the league minimum salary, which is $300,000. I wish I were able to "settle for" that paltry sum my first year in my business. I have no idea how they could possibly hope to feed their family on a paltry $300,000 a year. With regard to the 21 year old Rafael Devers, how much money is he going to make this year? And how much money will he likely make in future years-despite the inability to sign with whatever team he chooses for a while? Yes, baseball is a monopoly of sorts. But its not only good for the owners (who have every right to make whatever rules suit them), but its also very very good for those fortunate enough to have the talent to play the game well. Its when guys like JD Martinez hold out for an outrageous amount of money far exceeding their worth that fans like me get cynical about the level of pervasive greed among some of these guys. Its a trade off: lack of mobility within your chosen profession in exchange for outrageous amounts of money to PLAY A GAME for a living.

I think that what a lot of people forget here is the fact that when you own the company you get to make the rules, within reason. You get to reap the profits of your investment-which is generally a lot of money- in the company you own. The other guys, they work for YOU. The baseball players work for the owners. Now there is a union that to a certain extent protects the players, but at the end of the day, those who made the investment in the company (or team) have every right to expect to make the rules. If the players do not like what is offered, they have every right to leave the business, but they have NO RIGHT to make salary demands. Its a take it or leave it business.

Then I guess Mookie Betts will have to "settle for" earnlng "just" $10M dollars this year. I think he earned "just" about a million dollars last year. He is still putting in his time at his business, The Boston Red Sox. While I put MY time in I was "underpaid" relative to others who had, say, 10 more years of service than I did-even though we essentially performed the same job- but I knew what I was getting into. I will concede that its tougher for MLB players to choose another employer IN THEIR FIELD, but the option is always there to get OUT of their fields and, say, sell real estate or open a restaurant if they are unhappy with their working conditions. As I wrote elsewhere, I just can't understand how JD Martinez can possibly hope to feed his family with just $125M. Rice and beans, no doubt. Sorry. These guys ALL have a choice. Take the best offer-or find a better one in another field if they like.

"Underpay" according to who? That involves a value judgement. Its not just metrics that determine the value of a player, its also years of service and other factors. When you talk about a guy getting $300,000 as a minimum salary, its hard to say with certainty that they are being "underpaid". I did the same job as others in my field for years and earned less money than they did because they had more years of service with the company. There was were no negotiations; I was told how much the offer was and I could choose to take it or work elsewhere, perhaps in a different field if I wanted to. I didn't have the option to "hold out", nor do most normal people. If you "hold out" someone else will be offered my job. Sorry; these guys are spoiled and greedy, in general. I have no sympathy for guys like Martinez at all.

They are limited only by their imagination and willingness and desire to change. There are many players who chose other careers when they couldn't get what they wanted from the game. Doug Mirabelli chose to sell real estate; John Rocker became a conservative columnist; Byun-Hyung Kim opened a restaurant; Mitch Williams developed his own brand of salsa, "The Wild Thing". JD Martinez is thumbing his nose are an absurd amount of money, as is Hosmer, in an effort to get even more. When is it "enough"? It smacks of greed. You could say the same thing about the owners not wanting to pay these guys even more money so they can keep it for themselves or for their business, but you know what? They OWN the team. As Mel Brooks once said, "Its good to be the king".

The baseball league minimum salary is now up to $300,000. Thats most of the way to the top 1% of wage earners in this country (they earn about $400,000). I am not disputing how hard these guys work, but on the other hand, I feel like I worked hard to get where I am as well, as, I am sure, did you. If I didn't like the salary or working conditions that my chosen profession offered, like everyone else in this country, I am free to seek employment elsewhere. Similarly, if a baseball player does not care for what is offered, he can also leave. Its a free country. I certainly think that they should try to get what they can, but I still have no sympathy for guys like JD Martinez who is apparently turning down a contract (or at least stalling) worth a reported $120M+. No tears for JD. Sorry. Sign the paper.

"Suppress" the salaries....an interesting oxymoron. We aren't exactly talking about NORMAL pay rates here. These athletes are talented, no doubt, but they are all being paid outrageous sums to PLAY A GAME. They certainly have the choice to leave their chosen game and sell cars instead. Its hard for me to have any sympathy at all for players who are holding out for salaries well over $100M when they could sign to PLAY THE GAME today and be set for life. Wait.....let me wipe the tear off my cheek.....

I liked him just fine....its his baseball play that I didn't like. From early on his K to BB ratio portended a disaster, and that is pretty much what happened. Flash in the pan.

One has to feel a great deal of sorrow for JD Martinez. Seems $120M isn't enough to feed his family. How could we possibly expect him to survive on so little?

Its more up to his knee than medical science. Generally microfracture therapy (if you can even call it that) is a pretty crappy way to deal with the loss of cartilage in the knee. Sometimes it works briefly, maybe for a year if the patient is lucky, but the new cartilage created doesn't function very well. I think Pedroia will eventually need a joint replacement.

Its also highly unlikely that DD is going to allow this uncertainty to go on forever. Thats just plain stupid. He will not be making public his negotiating tactics, but I am quite sure that he has a deadline in mind. Eventually it will be time to move on.
