  1. I know. I was so so disappointed about that one. I actually had my red sox faith shaken for a while but then we came up with that big rookie pitcher and the world started to look a little baseball brighter to me!
  2. I agree to a certain extent. Not though when comparing Fisk to Varitek. lol
  3. I would keep Porcello for as long as possible Moon but I think that at this point in time his Cy Young years are behind him as a matter of fact even though I was very happy for him, I think that that year was unusual for him for sure. You know what you have in Porcello. With Eovavldi, man who knows. Obviously it would be a risk I would take. I think that that arm is rebuilt.
  4. I hope the Sox sign Eovaldi with intentions of having him in the rotation. I do kind of think that that is what they will do. If he happens to really struggle (which I think is unlikely), then you move him to the pen. As for the Mets - yawn. Good luck with Cano. I absolutely do not think that a signing of Eovaldi will have anything at all to do with what the Red Sox decide to do with Rick Porcello. It would be silly to let a workhorse like this get away but a hypothetical it won't happen type of question becomes who would you keep? Eovaldi or Porcello? You surely know what you are going to get from Porcello. Eovaldi is the wildcard with the rebuilt arm - tremendous potential.
  5. I like it. If Dom had just been in center on that faithful day in '46.
  6. I hope so!!! Not the part about Stan the man though.
  7. The most successful people in the world (one of whom might be John Henry) are willing to take risks. They realize that playing it safe equates quite often to being afraid to make a mistake which might provide for a good life but it likely won't win you any gold rings. the red sox have won their championships by definitely being willing to take risks.
  8. My Grandson asked me whether or not Mookie Betts was the greatest right fielder of all time - I am thinking that he meant right fielder. That is how I answered his question. I have learned a great deal over the years and one of the things that I have learned is to not go into great depth when answering a 6 year olds question. but just so you know - all around right fielders - hmm possible I would still go with Clemente. they were all just so damn great that I don't think that you could go wrong with which ever one you went with.
  9. It is always risky. You know that. It just boils down to whether or not someone is willing to take the risk. If I have the $, in my mind the risk is limited. He has a rebuilt arm and his upside could be far greater than anything that we have seen from Porcello (former cy young). I would absolutely try to keep Porcello if he did not price himself out. He is an extremely talented middle of the rotation guy. As a matter of fact, I might even overpay for what he gives us. I do not think that it will be a situation of either or though and I don't buy into the concept promoted that it might be. Lots of things could change but down the road if the Sox want Sale, Eovaldi, and Porcello they likely will make it happen regardless of what the people who think they won't be able to afford it say.
  10. If we were offered either one right now - current age, current condition - I would still go with the Hall of Famer here - the greatest catcher the Sox have had and probably one of the few who people even consider in the same conversation as Johnny Bench. It is amazing to me how some seem to lack the historical perspective that others have. it isn't just an age thing either. My 6 year old Grandson asked me today whether Mookie was the greatest right fielder of all time. One of my jobs is to help educate this future athlete. Maybe someday for Mookie but not quite yet. Tek was good but not great, Fisk was great. here is what I told the little man- All due respect to today's players to - right field = Clemente - greatest hitter =Ted (without a doubt) - greatest player Willie I surely loved me some Varitek but really not in the same conversation with Carlton.
  11. Do you think that we New Englanders just learn slowly are are we just too stubborn to change? lol This year's team with all things factored took me back to a time that for me the only real game in town was baseball.
  12. Some of the teams Fisk played on very well might have been every bit as talented as all but one of our greatest Red Sox teams. They were sadly always just a little pitching poor. There has not been a catcher born who could have helped much either. It robbed me of just a small piece of my heart when the boys up and left town. I should say when they were allowed to leave.
  13. 3 and some sort of working option and off we go.
  14. A very good point. I taught that old cliche "no I in team" for many many years. It should never get old. As much as we love great individual efforts, what I loved the most about this year's team is that they got it. I doubt seriously that the Red Sox sign any free agent in the near future who doesn't get that no matter how talented they appear to be. Since we have been talking about Varitek, he certainly was all about the team as was Fisk.
  15. Lowell was the kind of person/player who I wish had spent his career in a Sox uniform.
  16. Maybe I'm biased I guess because I was fairly young when Carlton Fisk broke in but I would have to argue with anyone who thought that he wasn't the best all around catcher who has been in a Sox uniform. He is in the Hall for a reason. I get the part where you referred to Tek's titles so I would reply that when Varitek is inducted into the Hall that is when the discussion begins as to who the greatest catcher the Sox ever had might have been. Actually I think that when the greatest catchers of all time are mentioned , Fisk isn't at the top of the list but once again he gets mentioned. We probably shouldn't even be arguing over this simply because both of these two guys meant so much to the franchise.
  17. the MLB rumors site has been saying this now for a few days. One of the things that I like about DD is that we don't really know what he is up to. I doubt that he is relaxing and doing nothing though.
  18. I absolutely loved it when Variety came to Boston and I loved what he gave us. I do have to disagree with him "being the best catcher" in Red Sox history. A discussion of best Sox catchers has to begin with Carlton Fisk.
  19. You don't really have to waltz too far down memory lane to come up with another good one - the Rooster - Rick Burleson - I loved watching that guy play his position - ss.
  20. You should be carful Bellhorn about going on record with that. It is safe to say that I won't remember what you said but you know there are others who would hold your feet to the fire if the prophecy turns out wrong. lol I don't think that there is any way that he gets 6 either but you can't fault a fella for trying.
  21. notin is right again I guess Oh Foy. The Mets had a guy named Sidd Finch back in 1985 who had a fastball clocked at 168 mph. He never made it. Do you remember that guy?
  22. Also looks as though Kimbrel is looking for 6 years! Ouch - likely not in Boston.
  23. I'm sure that Billy Buck suffered after the error of '86 but it is surprising to me that if you ask people today what they remember about Buckner it is just that one thing. Actually, it really doesn't surprise me - that was probably silly even to say. I should have simply said that in addition to the event of '86, I remember BB for being an outstanding professional baseball player. By the end of '86 he was a beaten up 35+ year old player trying to keep it going. 21 years in the bigs. I have always admired athletes like Bill Buckner.
  24. What - wait - what just happened? Don't make a habit of this notin. It jeopardizes the entertainment factor of our posts to each other!
  25. I don't necessarily disagree with you here but I'm not above playing a little devil's advocate. I have heard over and over again how literally awful our current crop of minor leaguers are. One of the 2 or 3 worst farm systems in the league right. What is there to lose? What I will say and actually mean is that this move would not surprise me. Tomase's column this morning sums things up pretty well. It is the kind of move DD is apt to make. We shall see.
