    Lowell was the kind of person/player who I wish had spent his career in a Sox uniform.

    Maybe I'm biased I guess because I was fairly young when Carlton Fisk broke in but I would have to argue with anyone who thought that he wasn't the best all around catcher who has been in a Sox uniform. He is in the Hall for a reason. I get the part where you referred to Tek's titles so I would reply that when Varitek is inducted into the Hall that is when the discussion begins as to who the greatest catcher the Sox ever had might have been. Actually I think that when the greatest catchers of all time are mentioned , Fisk isn't at the top of the list but once again he gets mentioned. We probably shouldn't even be arguing over this simply because both of these two guys meant so much to the franchise.

    the MLB rumors site has been saying this now for a few days. One of the things that I like about DD is that we don't really know what he is up to. I doubt that he is relaxing and doing nothing though.

    I absolutely loved it when Variety came to Boston and I loved what he gave us. I do have to disagree with him "being the best catcher" in Red Sox history. A discussion of best Sox catchers has to begin with Carlton Fisk.

    You should be carful Bellhorn about going on record with that. It is safe to say that I won't remember what you said but you know there are others who would hold your feet to the fire if the prophecy turns out wrong. lol I don't think that there is any way that he gets 6 either but you can't fault a fella for trying.

    notin is right again I guess Oh Foy. The Mets had a guy named Sidd Finch back in 1985 who had a fastball clocked at 168 mph. He never made it. Do you remember that guy?

    I'm sure that Billy Buck suffered after the error of '86 but it is surprising to me that if you ask people today what they remember about Buckner it is just that one thing. Actually, it really doesn't surprise me - that was probably silly even to say. I should have simply said that in addition to the event of '86, I remember BB for being an outstanding professional baseball player. By the end of '86 he was a beaten up 35+ year old player trying to keep it going. 21 years in the bigs. I have always admired athletes like Bill Buckner.

    I don't necessarily disagree with you here but I'm not above playing a little devil's advocate. I have heard over and over again how literally awful our current crop of minor leaguers are. One of the 2 or 3 worst farm systems in the league right. What is there to lose? What I will say and actually mean is that this move would not surprise me. Tomase's column this morning sums things up pretty well. It is the kind of move DD is apt to make. We shall see.

    I agree. I don't do the statistical thing to attempt to prove my points very often (as in probably never) so my thoughts about watching Kimbrel are more gut feeling types of things and I have to say that I never felt that him coming in to a game this year made the outcome a done deal. There probably isn't a closer in the game today who was any better but I like my guys to throw strikes. I don't care much for relief pitchers in general who tend to walk guys. You have to have that guy if your are going to pay a bunch for a number of years for anyone who might wind up pitching what may 70 innings over the course of a season. I love Kimbrel but I also think that the position of closer has become something that I am not fond of. I do doubt very much though that you are going to replace one of the best of all time with someone as even as good anytime soon.

    The story of Rogelio(sp) Moret was a very sad one. That was a man who really looked liked he was going to have an outstanding career. Doug Griffin another one who could have solidified second base for us for such a long time had it not been for the beaning.

    I know right. It is a really tough call even if the price is right. I do think though that if he gets what he wants, it likely won't be from the Sox. I would love to see this "gamer" back in Boston but not with the deal he is looking for. I still think he will get the job done for a few years better than anyone we might stick out there though.

    He followed his dream. Great perseverance. You don't get where he got without being a damned gifted athlete. Congratulations and good luck moving forward.

    Actually you probably are correct in saying this. What he has done for us, will not be easy to replace, but in his case you really have to consider what you are apt to get from him going forward.

    It is like every statistic that can be quoted now by roughly 3 people here will now pop up to show what a foolish idea it is to bat your best hitter third. I am with you though because to this point I am just not sure what exactly constitutes your best hitter. 3rd or 4th works fine for me. With respect to our Sox team, I'm fine with Betts leading off if he feels comfortable there. It seemed to work.

    Second base really doesn't look like any kind of big issue with or without Pedroia. We all would like to see an upgrade if possible I guess, but personally I don't expect much from him. Unless a miracle has occurred (I believe in them by the way), I think that I would exchange his name with someone else when projecting next years lineup out of the gate. Projecting him third is a pipe dream. having him in the lineup is a dream. He will get his chance and it could happen. I think that him making a strong comeback is as likely as Hanley making one. Oh wait, Hanley is making one. Now there's the guy we could use. Come on - stick him at second and call it good.

Just trying to help you out here notin. lol For the record though, I could care less what JH does with his money. That is just the thing though isn't it - It is his money. Maybe he wants to give it away - what do you think?

    Counting on Wright I think for anything is somewhat of a pipe dream. In the last two seasons, he has pitched fewer than 60 innings in each. If he comes back at all, it should probably be seen as gravy on them tatoes. Sadly i feel about the same way about Pedroia. I am just glad that second base looks fairly well covered whether or not he comes back and stays healthy.

    It is a wonderful time to be a Red Sox fan. I have many fairly important things that I spend too much time worrying about (worry = a wasted emotion by the way). One of my worries will not be who we can sign, when and if we can sign them, or whether JH wants to spend his money on this team or not. It is all good stuff to talk about, I just have no interest in being critical of anyone who sees things differently. A lot of good things could happen over the next few years believe it or not as well as all the worrisome junk we hear so much about.

    I think that you have the right approach here. I know that I might be seen as a huge fan of DD"s. I'm a fan of anyone working for the Red Sox for the most part. I did like the fact that his reputation preceded him. My primary gripe about what gets said is that some seem to already have him pegged as a farm destroyer or maybe even someone who cannot build a bullpen, or whatever. Personally I do not care what it looks like to some with respect to what he has done in the past. I know all of the comebacks that could be said here thus it would be a waste of time to present all of the issues once again. He has been and hopefully will continue to be one of the best in the business. Obviously there are going to be some hurdles to clear if the Sox are going to continue to compete year after year. We are lucky to have someone competent in all phases of the game leading the way.
