  1. ok - Please don't make Ben Cherington out to be some sort of genius with respect to anything. Ben had a job. Ben did a job as well as he could. He deserves credit for that but everything that DD has done can not be directly traced to what Ben Cherington did. DD is DD and Ben is Ben. DD has the job and he has done it well. When I compliment him, it really has nothing to do with Ben. I am very pleased with the job that DD has done and I am glad that it seems as though he will be leading us in the future. Now - me saying that really isn't saying anything negative about Ben Cherington.
  2. I'm a little bored right now too Moon and more than likely I'm going to try to stir up a little trouble.
  3. Great post here Nick. Everybody here probably knows that it is the way I view the whole show. Now, what I am also pretty sure that you realize is that there are also people who post here who actually believe that if we had not traded for whoever etc. and had not signed Martinez we still would have had great shot at still winning. Things are going to get tougher moving forward but I'm not buying the gloom and doom and unrest predicted by the pro cliff pro window crowd. Great moves were made to win a world series and I suspect more of the same as we move forward but once again I have been labeled as unrealistic. Oh well!
  4. Sandy Leon likely is a better catcher receiver than Vasquez. We have two damn good backup catchers. that is what they are. I still don't see it as a position of great need. It ain't broke!
  5. I think that in 2020, you could still sneak Eovaldi into that blank space.
  6. I agree with you but I am becoming somewhat influenced by people here trying to make predictions about how JH is going to spend his money. I just think that these contracts have become somewhat insane. I am a good old slap happy card carrying capitalist too.
  7. Overall I agree with what you are saying. I just would not use the phrase - we have no farm system. I like some of those kids and think that they stand as good if not a better chance than they guys we traded at someday becoming influential ml players. It is a confusing time for sure. Even I can see all of the obstacles that need to be dealt with I just think that we have a chance to do that. I also am not sure that DD thinks that Rick Porcello, regardless of how dependable he has been for us, is the kind of starting pitcher you pay big for. As much as I love Mookie too - I'm starting to question whether a long term commitment of hundreds of millions of dollars is going to be seen as sensible. Hey - If JH is able to get 25 mil for his 19 bathroom Florida mansion maybe he will sign Porcello to a one year contract. lol
  8. Of course it would impact the team. What I am reading here is that you might be thinking that our owner and management cannot possibly overcome the loss of any of these guys? You don't agree with the information coming from the front office I guess. My choice is to wait and see. I'm going to remain positive. You might think that my thinking is unrealistic. I am ok with that but I'll just keep on keeping on. Every time I read a doomsday forecast of the future of this franchise, I will continue to respond.
  9. Everyone realizes that the Red Sox will not be able to retain all of our beloved (maybe even a little over rated) players when the times come. I liked what Dombrowski said in addition to this. The part that maybe needs to also be paid attention to. The core of your successful team changes - it always does, That does not mean that the team necessarily goes into any type of dry spell with respect to winning. It is just the way it goes.
  10. Im on board with everything you posted here.
  11. I like that. Makes sense to me!
  12. But didn't they in that some note mention that the Kimbrel still might end up back in Boston?
  13. There will be challenges for sure but I don't think that from the sounds anyway that our ownership and management have any intention of backing off the pedal of success. I think that we are in good hands and I look forward actually to how these guys will successfully handle all of the many challenges that people here are so concerned about as we move forward.
  14. I liked him leading off as well. the reason being though was his baserunning ability more than anything else.
  15. No!!! C'mon though - i leave that stuff alone until I feel the need to rebut something I don't necessarily fall all over in love with.
  16. We are pretty lucky to have them both I guess. I'll be happier if Betts is hitting in a spot where he gets a chance to knock in a few more runs.
  17. I saw Kimbrel's name mentioned as well - you never know. I'm happy for Kelly but I'm glad he didn't sign that contract with Boston. I also read those comments by DD about what he thinks about the "cliff" theorists and the disappearing "window". I think that I get it finally. There is one for sure with this core of players. I think that that is what needs to be emphasized. He doesn't think though that the winning stops as you lose some of this core. I like that (although everybody here knows that I am a lover of all things DD - lol)
  18. I don't think that going the cheap route is necessarily the plan no matter what it sounds like. I think that he is apt to go the practical route and not overpay for a relief pitcher. Looks like he is waiting for the relief pitching market to settle down. I don't think that I am going to criticize him showing patience. I think that the Dodgers overpaid for Kelly. I think that he will sign a significant piece before long. Might even be Kimbrel. Who knows.
  19. stop that razin' - You might make me say something bad and then you will stop communicating with me. lol (I know that isn't happening - when it comes to athletics, i think that we have too much in common!) For the proverbial talksox record though, I'm always apt to be that contrarian who chooses to look at things in multiple ways. I have fun here.
  20. I thank you for that. My choice would be Betts but the point is that there are many ways to look at most things.
  21. Hmm - Sorry Moon that you thought that I actually expected you to explain anything to me. I actually was trying to make a point. I do agree that Betts (imo) this year would be considered our best hitter. My point is that even though every quoteable stat that you cn obviously recite to me does not mean that there will never be a debate as to what or who constitutes the best hitter on any team. It depends on what you use as your criteria and what you value. Now what I would say is that I don't think that the difference between Betts and Martinez is some huge divide.
  22. Why does he look like JD Martinez?
  23. I would love to see Betts hitting third. Just because! but alas I'm pretty comfortable with Cora's decisions. There are numerous people who seem to think that your best hitter should hit in a specific spot in the lineup. The question that I have not seen answered definitively is what constitutes your best hitter?
  24. I agree and I also feel that one of the reasons that he pitched so well in the series was that he knew that if he screwed up he had Sale, Price, Porcello. Eovaldi, and E-Rod out there to pick him up.
  25. Oh I beg to differ - JH may very well have a self imposed budgetary cap but he sure as hell has no cap on what he can spend if he choses to spend. Guess we will just have to wait and see what he decides to do. By the way - c'mon do I ever hope the Yanks sign Machado.
