  1. Betts has made it fairly clear that he isn't interested in talking about this at this time. The other two have shown a desire to at least talk.

absolutely right! Kuchar made it right as he should have. Anyone calling one of the most respected players on tour not to mention the fact that he is committed to his family, an ******* does not really get it.
  3. thanks for that - i do like Speier but once again if you have someone who really is good at what they do, my persoanal preference would be to go with the guy with the on field experience.
  4. No one is likely to argue that Alex Speier knows what he is talking about. If someone said that, I could have missed it. If you are on the field and actually showing someone how to do something it is helpful though if you can sort of do it. You don't have to expert in it since it isn't life or death but it does help. For the record, I kind of like him.
  5. Just read that and it is interesting.
  6. We do disagree to a certain extent. Based on what you have written it sounds as though Swihart in your opinion has no value. I don't agree. I do agree that we have a serviceable catching duo in Vaz and Sandy. We can get by. If someone else was brought in, there might be a minor adjustment period but that is all I think it would be. I do not think that our current #1 and #2 catchers are as directly responsible for the success of our pitching staff as you do. We both know that it isn't a bad thing to disagree form time to time. This is a good discussion in which two people can communicate in a non-nasty way even if they don't agree.
  7. Using an expression like the third string catcher seems to indicate a lack of ability and a great distance between the two guys that are ahead of him. Vazqueth and Leon are both decent catchers. Neither is anything special at all. if they were DD would not be listening to offers - if anyone is actually interested in either one - for them both. They would be very good backup catchers but most teams can duplicate their skills for less money. As a team, we are good enough to make them tolerable.
  8. I do not place as much significance in the numbers you have posted as you do. i suppose that in Swihart's case they likely mean something but with respect to the other two not so much. Swihart's numbers I suspect would improve significantly if given the opportunity. Don't get me wrong, i do not think that our catchers hurt us nor do I think that we are in need of an upgrade there at this time. i do feel that trying to project them as anything that cannot be replaced is a little silly. I would even suggest that one of the reasons Swihart is still kicking around is that DD just isn't convinced that ultimately he could be a major upgrade over the other two. It is not an issue - it is just something to talk about.
  9. i'm not disagreeing with you here but saying that Leon's or Vazquez's trade value for that matter is at a high, I'm thinking isn't really saying very much. Teams that have a need for a good backup might be interested but as a front liner going forward not so much. Our catchers don't hurt us because they can catch - pretty important for a catcher. T really don't see them as being particularly special at all. If one goes, it won't be like suffering an insurmountable blow of any sort. If they were that widely respected one of them would likely have been gone quite awhile ago.
  10. I don't favor roster expansion at all. You dance with the ones you brung so to speak. I hate the fact that the playoffs in general have become a second season. If roster expansion is something that is important to some then i would suggest that the season certainly could be shortened. We all know that that isn't going to happen -$$$ !!!
  11. No they absolutely are better than mine - only speak for myself. I kind of like him but my guess would be once again that there likely are former players out there with every bit as much expertise as he has. He happens to be here. Given the option - and if I actually cared about this stuff - the analytical expert with the playing experience would be the one that I would hang my hat on. You see it really is all about personal choice. There are people here who do feel as they they have to prove a point when it comes to this crap. i don't worry much about it. If my automobile needs work, it is likely that a person who has studied the mechanism thoroughly but has never actually worked on a vehicle would not get my business. I would sooner opt for the person who has done the studying and had some practical experience as well.
  12. This is one where there is 0 debate between you and I. Expanding the roster in September the way they do, in my estimation does nothing to make me even want to watch. If we weren't so good, I might not. I think that it cheapens what has been done by the real team players for most of the year. If they want to make changes then, there should be some price to pay.
  13. There have been many changes to the game that I don't particularly like but roster expansion would be close to the top of the list.
  14. seriously - now a whole new language needs to be learned.
  15. Leon is the least popular? Did I miss the popularity poll? If any of these 3 were to be traded, this team would not skip a beat. Believe it or not even our pitchers likely would adjust. I think that in this case much too much is being made of the pitcher-catcher love affair. The issue really is who wants any of these guys enough to give up at the least a ten play ticket to a local municipal golf course.
  16. What frightens me the most with Pedroia is that all it will take is a reaggrevation of that injury and he will likely be done for the rest of the season. I don't think that playing him for a few days and then resting him for a few days will make much difference. It is a big roll of the dice. Hope it works out but I don't think the odds are all that good.
  17. That actually is an excellent point. There are always plusses and minuses to just about everything.
  18. I wonder how this ever turned in to an either or argument? hmmm I would bet that it is still possible to have the best of both worlds.
  19. i love the fact that the use of the term "ace" is subjective - including this term as well as any other of the very subjective ideas and concepts that exist in the game are what make it so special. not everything can nor does it need to be defined. i look at these types of things as a way to use creativity and imagination.
  20. Jack oh Jack where are you. Are these recent postings better than the recurring analytics discussion or any of the other over talked about topics. It is what goes on.
  21. Oh stop that . Now even you are doing it! lol of course former players particularly those with extensive minor league experience would do a better job than Dombrowski- We have been schooled in the following: he has no clue of the importance of having a strong farm - he has always traded away any prospects of value - He knows absolutely nothing about how to build a bullpen. The only gd thing that this bum knows how to do is win consistently.
  22. Not really intended for you Jack. I feel the same way that you do in many respects. I shudder to even say the word "cliff" here. It has taken on a meaning all of its own. It is kind of what gets done here though. It is kind of like politics for me. Being forced to pick a side and being stereotyped if you don't agree with someone. I don't like it much but there is not much that I can do about it. I still like the forum.
  23. Sorry that it gets tiresome for you Jack. Its pretty much the way I feel every time someone takes a ridiculous swipe at DD for helping to create such a successful program. Guess we just have to bear with it all huh.
  24. I'm pretty sure that you are not replying to my comment. I also think that he is competent at what he does. My personal preference, if I had an interest in learning more, would be to learn from someone equally as competent with vast experience actually playing the game. I have no clue whether Alex Speier ever played at any level and I'm not criticizing if he didn't. It would be an entirely personal preference. I'm entitled to that. In a way, I just conducted a little experiment. I proved my point to myself I guess.
  25. Obviously I am butting in here but I'm bored. I have actually come to appreciate Alex Speir and his contributions but in all honesty I know nothing about what his actual background in the game might be. Now, if I did have a deep concern for all of the analytics being used today that directly relate to baseball, I would be willing to bet that I could find someone who had a vast amount of experience in baseball, perhaps even at the professional level who also was extremely competent with all things analytical. Those are the types of people to whom I would listen. There are such things today as the educated athlete.
