  1. Personally I think that I would feel differently if I thought that the owners of these ml teams all were doing what they could to compete at the highest level. They aren't. They can claim that they are preparing for the future all they want to, they aren't. They continue to grow richer at the expense of their fans. Attendance is in decline and will continue in that trend until they wake up to the fact that everybody would like to think that they have a chance to win it all.
  2. hockey - hockey - hockey - curling - hockey - hockey - hockey ... ... ... !
  3. Matt Stairs??? You mean the Matt Stairs who lives in Bangor Maine?
  4. I have to admit it I guess - the chances of him showing up in Fenway this year are really minuscule.
  5. The '78 team was one of my favorite Red Sox teams of all by far. They were absolutely complete but when Louisianna Lightening was on the mound it just didn't seem fair at times. ERA is an interesting stat. It might be that I don't remember so well but it just seems that back in the day a pitcher whose ERA was greater than oh let's say 3.80 just was kind of run of the mill. One of my favorite Red Sox pitchers was Mombo. i'm not sure that many people even remember him as being a decent pitcher and he was very good. Maybe it had to do with the teams he played on. oh well - so much for memory lane.
  6. Ok - I'll take the half. Even though it isn't in my dna, I will work harder in the future!
  7. I'm not looking it up but how does that number compare to the rest of the league and especially the Yankees?
  8. pitching not so hot in '78.
  9. Oh please notin, stop that. Even you are bright enough to know that I'm not arrogant. Wait - was that arrogant of me to say?
  10. Ah - looks like you boys are the ones giving life to Bryce Brentz. I was just trying to add a little humor. Don't be humorless guys. I'll continue to cheer for anyone in a Sox uniform.
  11. one of notin's favorites!
  12. That might explain why he looks to the dugout before and after every pitch. Just kidding with you but it is pretty obvious.
  13. Once again - if JH wants him back it will be a done deal. There is no reason not to want this guy to be locked up.
  14. you might be right but I am certainly glad that I don't have to watch his antics 18 or so times this season. Good luck to the Padres. California could use some good news.
  15. It's late - i'm stumbling - got confused Do you mean Noless Nomore?
  16. Hold on a sec - not so sure that you are his biggest fan. One of his biggest maybe - grant you that.
  17. And you might be right but if the man with the money thinks he is ok then i say great and good for him. If Sale is resigned, my guess is that there is no way JH won't do what he can to keep this team competitive. Once again, i don't think that he is listening to the folks declaring the hard times ahead. He just must not be very smart I guess or maybe he knows something we don't.
  18. You might be right with respect to your predictions. I certainly hav no idea and won't even take a guess. Within 2 or 3 years, if some things don't change then baseball as we currently know it likely won't be the same. Management including ownership is very vested in the use of analytics and what they indicate in general about players of a certain age. With owners reluctant to sign free agents because of the number 30 plus, to any type of longer term contract, it is going to be interesting seeing what will happen. Some owners will be risk takers realizing that the numbers aren't always right. There will always be exceptions. There are also other factors to consider in addition to on the field play. JH tends to view Chris Sale this way. His importance to his team is pretty impressive. I'm with JH on this one although it makes no difference what I think.
  19. Likely Chris Sale will deserve to be paid. JH has already acknowledged his importance as a pitcher and as a teammate. If the decision to pay this man is made by the owner of the franchise it might be best to just accept it. In your personal views you might not like it. Get over yourselves - if you feel this way try to understand that he might not be listening to you. It is his money and I bet he gets to spend it the way he wants to.
  20. Les is more - no less no more!
  21. I agree with you for the time being but if Varitek is working hard specifically with Swihart is it not possible that the Sox think more highly of him than the majority of posters here do? If his catching skills continue to improve and the big if - he doesn't get traded- and he hits just a little (pretty low bar there), it is certainly possible that he becomes our number 1 before it is all over. I'm not saying that it will happen just that it might.
  22. So this kind of verifies my feelings about the game. You can certainly be an expert in certain aspects of the game but if you want some one to actually teach the game you need someone who has a complete grasp of the game. Anyone can know the fundamentals, not everyone can teach them - If you are talking catching, Varitek is a good choice.
  23. Would that guy be you?
  24. There are always exceptions. Sale is an exception. I have to go along with John Henry's call on this one! lol
