  1. Who was the new guy playing second base for Portland last night? Tell him to catch a shave and maybe he can get to the bigs and make a name for himself!
  2. I remember this very well. I think that you are right to that it was his last go around for the Sox. My last comment and then I'll let it go. If the Red Sox really felt any sense of urgency, which obviously they don't, to replace any of their current outfielders, they really wouldn't have far to look.
  3. The only problem that I have with this is that although Castillo is getting older, we may never know what he could do at the ml level. Is he good enough to start even for us or least be the number 4 man out there. he has clearly progressed throughout his ml years. He isn't just some stiff taking up a roster spot. Has he become a decent outfilelder? I don't know but I bet he could hit ml pitching. Don't try to guess where I'm going with this because I'm not - but a good guess anyway. It is just a messed up situation.
  4. You could be right for sure. With all of the talk about the Red Sox not having any ml ready outfielders in the system, it just seems very strange to me. Basically I just think that it is ridiculous what has happened here. It is hard for me to digest because having a guy in the minors who can play but not giving him a chance for any reason just doesn't make sense to me. Makes me think about farm systems in general in another way i guess. People likely will read into this that I am thinking that he should be up and playing for us right now - that is not the case at all but I will say that if the day comes that we wind up sticking either Holt or Lin in the outfield for any reason and this guy stays in Pawtucket, I will just continue to chuckle. My real feeling is that yes he should be in the major leagues.
  5. This pretty much sums up how I feel about him. He deserves a shot and likely will not get it. He could be better than the fifth outfielder in the system as well. anyway - on to other things I guess
  6. Porcello is what many of us have said he is - a durable middle of the rotation pitcher. It was great to see him perform the way he did the other night.
  7. He probably is experiencing a feeling of security. it is still sad to me. Not only do I think that he could be a productive asset for another team I think that it is also likely that he could help us. in today's market would he be worth 10 mil. per year? who knows. Likely it just isn't worth the risk to him. For the record, I am much more concerned with a talented player stuck in a sad situation than i am by any of the luxury tax ramifications. In what world does a player like this not get a chance? (another chance)
  8. Now I got it. I bet we could compile quite the list. It might have to be titled Wouldas, Shouldas, and Couldas. I think at some point in time it is all about the individual not getting the job done as opposed to anyone doing too much to screw anything up.
  9. It is very strange. Really the only reason i brought it up is because there seems to be some debate hear about whether Swihart could have been handled differently, or whether this or that guy was brought up to soon, or whether or not JBJ should continue on doing his thing for us. It is also possible that for the money he is being paid, Castillo could be a bargain. If he never plays in to any scenario, why not just buy the guy out?
  10. ok - not sure how it relates but just ok.
  11. and we have had to continue to listen over and over again about how the Red Sox are guilty of screwing up the careers of Swihart and likely others but here we have what could be one of the strangest situations of all. No one knows how well Castillo would play at the ml level. I 'm glad that he is over paid since I find the fact that he will likely never get to Fenway and continue to be our highest performing outfielder at the AAA level really really weird.
  12. Likely i'll start a new thread but I am wondering why more people don't see this as one of the strangest things we have seen.
  13. and the baseball tragedy that is Rusney Castillo continues. Not many people talk about this but this one just seems so odd.
  14. What that he shot himself. I know you guys down there in cowboy country are shootin' at any thing that moves most days but really come on Moon. Give Bryce a little credit and a little love here! lol lol lol
  15. That gd Farrell or Cherington or Luchino or whoever can be blamed when all unexpected bad things happen.
  16. I understand - I'm actually one of the we're that you are talking about. I hate JBJ's inability to hit. I do not think that his defensive genius makes up enough of the difference. I am also happy that we have him and would not like to see him traded. The statement that I just made has nothing to do with whether I value defensive or offensive baseball more than the other. If the team can score without needing any offense from him, wonderful!
  17. It is a blanket statement. I don't agree that someone wanting to see a player like JBJ hit maybe .250 is saying that his defense isn't greatly valued. I am much more defensively oriented in my thinking than i am offensively, I just believe that balance is important. I have always supported JBJ even though he really has never lived up to the expectations that he came to the big leagues with.
  18. I would be truly surprised if he is hated by anyone who knows anything about sports in general.
  19. What do you think the odds would be on a potential bet of the number of professional athletes competing today who are and have been cheating without being caught might be? Wouldn't it be nice if we lived in a world where no one cheated and everyone played fair. My oh my, I wonder how many are cheating today and getting away with it? Just kidding - I don't wonder about that at all. And how about this kid Chavis anyway saying that "everybody knows that hitting is contagious" - I wonder if he polled the analytical gurus before making this statement. I'm truly enjoying watching him do his thing. He doesn't live in a perfect world.
  20. wow
  21. I don't disagree with any of what you have said. My response is to anyone who wants to draw any comparison to what happened to both Swihart and Wright. Most of us I'm sure realize that those scenarios are not remotely close. Using Swihart in the outfield regardless of whether or not anyone disliked the move, was not a foolish move to make. In a normal situation yes you would think that a pitcher could be used as a pinch runner but in this case the decision was made to use an out of shape pitcher on the base paths. That was a bad move the resulted in bad things. With all of that being said though, I would have traded the knuckleballer when he was on top and I certainly do not care if he ever pitches in Boston again.
  22. I think that not having a hitter like Martinez in the lineup is devastating to this team. His initial signing was needed for many reasons. The value of that bat will be tied directly to the success or failure of this team.
  23. Once again - Wright was and probably is an out of shape knuckle ball pitcher. Swihart was and likely is in excellent shape. There was a huge difference between the two. Some people are in awe of the expression "major leaguer" - I'm not. I would be very curious to know whether or not Steven Wright could have run an 8 minute mile at the time he was asked to run the bases. I doubt it very much. It might have been poor judgement to try to use Swihart in another position but it was understandable. Using Wright as a pinch runner - you have got to be kidding me.
  24. Putting Swihart in the outfield at least made some sense. Using an out of shape pitcher who you needed by the way, was absolutely a wrong play. Actually it seemed ridiculous at the time. Trying to compare the two situations in my opinion is just as foolish as putting Wright on the base paths was. That injury was on Farrell. Any other and I mean any other player could and should have been used in that situation. situations were not comparable at all.
