  1. The key for me here is that I don't know that a perception of our team being highly competitive as opposed to competitive makes much of a difference. being competitive always gives us a chance. Many teams that enter a season considered highly competitive just don't get the job done.
  2. I think that one of the obvious financial goals that this team has is to stay under the cap. I do not think that it is the primary goal nor do I think that it should be. With that being said, it might be possible that our GM and management feels that trading either Martinez, Betts or whoever else might make us more competetive than we are now based on the return.
  3. i've always liked Porcello in a #4 role. I'm glad for him that he won a Cy Young but it didn't change my mind with the overall opinion. i would like to see him back in Boston but I don't know if they are willing to afford him. I read somewhere that the suggested cost to sign him would likely be around 11 million. There are going to be more teams interested in him I think than may people expect. he is too healthy and consistent not to demand some interest. A bidding war for his services is apt to exempt the Sox.
  4. I think that the majority of fans would be extremely surprised if both Betts and Martinez were not in the lineup. i think that the ultimate goal remains to win games not to save money. Moves might be made but I'm betting that they will be made with an eye toward improving our team now.
  5. Regardless of what our budget conscious folks think, I doubt seriously that this franchise will accept going in to a season thinking that it is ever ok feeling that they won't be able to compete but it's all good because in a year or two we'll be back. Realistic or not, you better have hope. Sale says that there is no doubt that he will be ready to go in the spring. He is an ace and he is ours. I think that it is a little early to be negative about what the immediate future holds.
  6. Glad you posted this. The Yankee series in 04 is absolutely the only thing that in my mind could top that '67 season. We listened to every game and watched the ones we could. We were captivated by this amazing team.
  7. Throw enough ---- against the wall and see if something sticks!
  8. We agree notin. is that even legal?
  9. 00-09 of course gets the nod but I loved me the decade of the 70's! Truth be told though, I had my most amount of fun with baseball during the decade of the 60's. It is not all about winning the gold ring for me. it's as much about the hunt where I come from.
  10. You have described me here. I am not one who wants us to suck ever. Winning it all is never a given as a matter of fact I'm thinking that the odds are against it. Thinking that we have a chance every year, keeps me young.
  11. Athletically Imo there remains 0 question as to who the better athlete is was and will be going forward - Moncada. I have said that since the day I saw them standing side by side. it was more about a positional thing i think. it would be a bit of a joke to say that Beni was comparable athletically to Moncada. NO WAY. Did we trade the right guy at that time? Of course we did.
  12. I'm not sure I totally agree. I think that there will likely be quite a few regulars so to speak who might certainly be waiting and watching to see what ownership decides. Ticket prices are already quite costly for decent seats. Maybe it is worth it to some regardless of the product I guess.
  13. I think that the majority of fans are supportive of whoever the GM is. In this case, ours comes with a very good portfolio. Doing next to nothing this year might even be acceptable to most but giving Betts away regardless of how it gets spun - yup - I agree with your statement that it might very well cause an uproar from the faithfull.
  14. Pomeranz's second half pleases me greatly (right Slasher). I was a big fan of the initial trade. His success now does not surprise me. Big kid, big arm, youth was on his side.
  15. hard to imagine this one considering our history of producing top quality starters year after year - omg what forever shall we do
  16. I understand and when you are the very best at something I guess that you should be paid.
  17. Isn't that just the way.
  18. Hey - are you calling me uncommon? LOL Allen who? I'm just kidding. I really do not mind supporting an opinion that is not common to this forum since i consider myself rather common.
  19. Thanks for posting this. If JH was holding the line on ticket costs or possibly even lowering them, it would be a lemon that could be swallowed I guess. If things proceed as the media spins it or how some on here think that it might turn out, personally i will continue to watch but there is no way I would go near that ballpark for the "experience". Doesn't go along with my philosophy of getting what you pay for. I don't mind and overpay if the product is solid. We all know right that the Sox have a budget. We just have to trade that once in a generation talent likely because of that damned budget! lol Plain speak and plain logic works for quite a few folks.
  20. I think that you are 100% correct. What we willingly pay for entertainment in this country is joke like. As sports salaries continue to sky rocket all I hear being shoved down my throat is the growing divide between the haves and the have nots. No one seems to complain much about elite salaries and now we certainly don't want to see JH to have to pay any of that luxury tax. LOL It is a fact that in this world the rich tend to get richer but not often with this type of blessing from the public.
  21. So this is what that says to me - fans will be paying more to have a really good experience again in a few years? I understand that it is about making money but that spin doesn't work for me. Paying forward for the future works well I guess for a college scholarship fund but when it comes to my favorite sports teams not so much. I want to at least see some evidence that this year's team is poised to make a run if I'm paying more for a product. In what world does anyone knowingly pay more for less? I will gladly pay more for my "new" rusty car if you promise to repair it for me in a few!
  22. There are obviously people posting here who do an incredible job digging up data with respect to all things Red Sox. I wonder if anyone can suggest to me how much money the franchise will either make or lose by going over the luxury tax limit. In terms of future value, I think that the consensus is that the franchise is worth a whole lot more now than when JH purchased it. Are they making money or not?
  23. We all agreed? The group here who thinks alike might have. lol I could see that data for the rest of time but there is no way that I would agree that those deals were overpays. It might be a different point of view but there you go!
  24. So this is for you notin since this is what you tend to do. You obviously are saying that we will be highly competitive this coming year and for the foreseeable future. I like that . Good one. It is annoying and my head is totally above ground.
  25. All of the arguments that I have read here for the Red Sox need to get under the luxury tax limit really fall on my deaf ears. The suggestion that we need to save that money and that it will possibly allow us to build up our farm so that we will be highly competitive soon possibly what in 3,4, or 5 years maybe, just doesn't work once again for me. I truly believe that any suggestion that it is necessary for John Henry to stay below that limit for whatever reason really is just a little hollow. I'll predict that if any moves are made that are seen as hurting this team's chances this coming year of competing at a high level, the cost will hurt with respect to ticket sales. Major league attendance is down and downsizing one of the most successful franchises in the history of the game isn't going to help. Spin the spin any way you want but there still are people out there who won't go to Fenway just for the opportunity to sit in one of those crappy little seats if the team isn't winning.
