  1. 86 was really a tough one to take. In 67 and 75, we had two outstanding teams, but I was just happy to see us have a chance. We played 2 very good teams. Because of the hype and the buildup, this one has been tough to take. I just want them to compete and have a chance. I will continue to cheer them on but I don't see them competing without major changes. I wish that there was a restart button to push.
  2. I don't think I said that. And what was my assertion? I had a hunch you might chime in. Did I really use the A word?
  3. Therein lies the rub for me. Every stathead, every scout, and just about everybody else felt and many probably still do feel that a good team was assembled on paper. I know that it is cliche to say and that the *******s will blast me, but the game is played on the field and not on the paper. They just aren't nearly as good as everybody thinks that they are. I'm more concerned that the farm system has been over rated as well. Take a good look at both Pawtucket and Portland and tell me that what you see there really gets you excited. I say ********. I am a Red Sox fan for life, but what really is the plan? Do you really think that they have one? I don't. I think that they are just as screwed up as the rest of us. I will keep following them in hopes that I see a little light for the future.
  4. Regime change could be on its way - they gambled and lost. At one point it looked as though everything was in place for this team to be competitive for a long time.
  5. The Red sox might help themselves by culling their farm system a bit by getting rid of some of the guys who really don't look (or who the sox don't think will be) like they will have much future at the next level. If anybody was willing to trade someone like Leake to us for someone like Marrerro, which I really doubt they would, why would that not be a good deal for us? It doesn't really address the major issues but it might give us a reason to start forgetting about some of the 4's and 5's in the program already. Change can be good.
  6. Another nice start for Henry Owens last night. I would much prefer to see him brought up and to get his chance than have them trade for another mid-rotation starter at best. I wouldn't mind seeing him packaged in a trade for a bigger fish as well.
  7. Same - for life fan here. I hope they make the trades to set us up for next year. One trade + one free agent signing = 2 top of the rotation (potentially) pitchers.
  8. I like that. With the our track record, this kid will wind up getting traded for nothing and ultimately become a player. What a start for him. The projectability factor for him should be warming up just a little I think.
  9. You are right. It is easy to be blinded by the opinions of all of the analysists.
  10. Never a bad choice to play golf.
  11. I'm going with yes. Not sure they have anything to sell and I can't continue to pay much attention if they sit still. No one is going to vote for a rent a player for just this season - makes no sense. Wait till next year should start before the end of the month. I think that they are very apt to start building the rotation for next year, this year.
  12. Moncada has started to hit of late. Guerra looks like he could be the real deal. It is good to have access to all relevant info when you want to take a close look at our prospects. I've decided to watch them play, check their stats and make up my own mind about them. It is safer for me.
  13. I'm glad that you saw that. Good for him.
  14. I tend to like players like that. I might be overly excited about Hernandez. Where i coached, we quite often didn't have the league's best. We worked with what we had. Mental toughness, coachability, work ethic, and just flat out determination allowed us to win a lot of games over the years. I'm sure that scouts and all these people who I know nothing about, must look at those as being attributes as well. As a matter of fact, I think that those attributes trumped talent in 2013. If I were a scout, which of course thank God I'm not, I would not draft a player if he did not get high marks on that short list of qualities.
  15. I agree- I think that his ability to field the position at the next level might be an issue for him. He could make it though. I hope he gets his chance. It's a very good story. We have seen many players with a lot more potential never make it.
  16. What SK wrote. I think that I saw it the same place he did. Come on - Don't I get a "fair enough"?
  17. You are right actually. The credibility concept though just comes as a result of a number of people who post here who sound like they know what they are talking about. I did not purposefully skip on any concepts regarding project valuations. I truly admit that I don't know what they are. A debate is good. I like reading other opinions. I also don't mind admitting mistakes. I liken this to the game of golf - you can have the greatest swing in the world but if you don't get the ball in the cup, you don't make it.
  18. Hey - good list - my personal opinion - Guerra would currently move up this list until he gets to a level that he stalls out at. I like him a lot. Based on what he has done this year, he must not play against many lefties.
  19. I just understand results. When I was coaching, I did not cut the best players. I always preferred those who got it done to those who someone thought might get it done.
  20. I am enthusiastic about this kid but no more than I would be for any minor league player who is having a great season and deserves the "love". I don't know if he will ever truly make it but based on everything I have seen and read, no one else does either. Maybe the Boss was right when he said "believe half of what you hear and none of what you see"!
  21. SK - there were a number of posters who didn't even know who Hernandez is. They have no credibility with me. They don't follow them they just spit out someone else opinions about prospects. I don't claim to know any more than anyone else about these kids but I am very results oriented. A lot of these guys come wrapped in pretty packages. I tend to like the guys who produce whether or not they come with glowing accolades. I truly acknowledge that the people doing the scouting and the ones crunching the numbers are very talented. I just absolutely believe that on occasion they are human and get too hung up in of the "potential" talk just like the rest of us. I do appreciate your posts. I guess I really don't know what a player has to do to tun the heads of the talent searching gurus. Could Hernandez fall flat from here on in? Of course but as of today, no "prospect" is outplaying him at any level.
  22. Rodriguez's ceiling was always projected to be higher than Owens. No one knows how ultimately their careers will play out. If the return was high enough, I could see Owens packaged with others for a trade but not Rodriguez

All great picks. A great tribute for Tom Watson as well.
