  1. Sam Travis -not what you would call eye candy for prospect watchers. Everything points to him just being one step above ordinary. To me that means he has a real chance to develop. Hard worker! He has been putting up some pretty good numbers. A potential first baseman.
  2. I think I agree with this. I did not see enough hits coming out of Swihart to make me think that he is a future star. It would be nice to keep them both but if the decision to trade Swihart was made and it actually looked like it could help us, I would be in favor.
  3. That actually is an interesting question. Pitching comes first for me. With two very good proven arms leading the way, I think that the offense would just naturally look quite a bit better. I really don't think that Hammals(sp) provides an answer but I also would not arbitrarily exclude anyone over the age of 30. I appreciate what they have as goals, but I want to win now. I really enjoy watching some of our younger players but I'm not sure I consider any of them really untouchable. Bogaert's, Betts, and Rodriguez probably come the closest for me.
  4. I think that there is some potential for next year's team in the minors. Outside of Owens, we have seen what many consider to be the best so far. We are not just around the corner from being able to compete at the highest level. Deals need to be made if this team is going to get a little swagger back within the next 3 to 4 years. No one should be untouchable.
  5. I hear you and lifelong fans try to stay positive about the future. Based on what they have done over the course of the last few years, not sure this current front office is capable of making moves that will help us. Somewhere along the line there is a huge disconnect between our prospects and what they do at the ml level.
  6. there is no one we haven't already seen in Pawtucket who is ready to help us out much right away. Maybe owens but maybe not. No one in Portland playing well enough to be promoted to Pawtucket. We might have some decent young talent but they haven't proven a thing yet. If we don't make some deals and simply depend on the farm to produce the players, we are in for a long wait. JBJ is the only one who stands out and we know how most people feel about him.
  7. They had an opportunity to at least hold the line from a pitching perspective. They went in a different direction. We thought that they would be in a position to purchase pitching at the trade deadline to shove them over the hump. the hump now is huge. As a matter of fact they are getting humped. They need two big time, big game pitchers for the future. If they hold the line on the thought that they absolutely will not sign anyone over the age of 30 to a multi year, then we just need to sit back and continue to watch from home. They will have painted themselves into corner with no exit. sounds good but doesn't always work.
  8. I would just like to hear upper management at least sound normal . Admit mistakes have been made. Move on. I think that Hanley Ramirez should never bring a glove to work. I realize that you have to deal with the Ortiz factor. If you don't move Sandoval or Ramirez, suck it up and make the tough decisions. Move on. It is going to be a while before the are competitive again. Future!
  9. Move on - turn the page on Buchholz.
  10. Oh no - don't think that. Remember the early 60's.
  11. 86 was really a tough one to take. In 67 and 75, we had two outstanding teams, but I was just happy to see us have a chance. We played 2 very good teams. Because of the hype and the buildup, this one has been tough to take. I just want them to compete and have a chance. I will continue to cheer them on but I don't see them competing without major changes. I wish that there was a restart button to push.
  12. I don't think I said that. And what was my assertion? I had a hunch you might chime in. Did I really use the A word?
  13. Therein lies the rub for me. Every stathead, every scout, and just about everybody else felt and many probably still do feel that a good team was assembled on paper. I know that it is cliche to say and that the *******s will blast me, but the game is played on the field and not on the paper. They just aren't nearly as good as everybody thinks that they are. I'm more concerned that the farm system has been over rated as well. Take a good look at both Pawtucket and Portland and tell me that what you see there really gets you excited. I say ********. I am a Red Sox fan for life, but what really is the plan? Do you really think that they have one? I don't. I think that they are just as screwed up as the rest of us. I will keep following them in hopes that I see a little light for the future.
  14. Regime change could be on its way - they gambled and lost. At one point it looked as though everything was in place for this team to be competitive for a long time.
  15. The Red sox might help themselves by culling their farm system a bit by getting rid of some of the guys who really don't look (or who the sox don't think will be) like they will have much future at the next level. If anybody was willing to trade someone like Leake to us for someone like Marrerro, which I really doubt they would, why would that not be a good deal for us? It doesn't really address the major issues but it might give us a reason to start forgetting about some of the 4's and 5's in the program already. Change can be good.
  16. Another nice start for Henry Owens last night. I would much prefer to see him brought up and to get his chance than have them trade for another mid-rotation starter at best. I wouldn't mind seeing him packaged in a trade for a bigger fish as well.
  17. Same - for life fan here. I hope they make the trades to set us up for next year. One trade + one free agent signing = 2 top of the rotation (potentially) pitchers.
  18. I like that. With the our track record, this kid will wind up getting traded for nothing and ultimately become a player. What a start for him. The projectability factor for him should be warming up just a little I think.
  19. You are right. It is easy to be blinded by the opinions of all of the analysists.
  20. Never a bad choice to play golf.
  21. I'm going with yes. Not sure they have anything to sell and I can't continue to pay much attention if they sit still. No one is going to vote for a rent a player for just this season - makes no sense. Wait till next year should start before the end of the month. I think that they are very apt to start building the rotation for next year, this year.
  22. Moncada has started to hit of late. Guerra looks like he could be the real deal. It is good to have access to all relevant info when you want to take a close look at our prospects. I've decided to watch them play, check their stats and make up my own mind about them. It is safer for me.
  23. I'm glad that you saw that. Good for him.
  24. I tend to like players like that. I might be overly excited about Hernandez. Where i coached, we quite often didn't have the league's best. We worked with what we had. Mental toughness, coachability, work ethic, and just flat out determination allowed us to win a lot of games over the years. I'm sure that scouts and all these people who I know nothing about, must look at those as being attributes as well. As a matter of fact, I think that those attributes trumped talent in 2013. If I were a scout, which of course thank God I'm not, I would not draft a player if he did not get high marks on that short list of qualities.
