  1. I think 80 for 4 is a hell of a lot closer to reality than 30 + for however many years. He is going to be a dh. 4 at 20 and he plays in a Red Sox uni. What do the better dh's make these days? Is it even remotely logical or possible that all of a sudden one is going to paid twice as much as the best make this year?
  2. sensible post
  3. i hope that no one would disagree with your line of reasoning. The problem i see is that no one really has any idea what a 34 year old dh is going to be offered by anyone. If some organization truly feels that signing a 34 year old dh long term to the type of contract that you and others suggest that he will be offered more power to them. Personally I would be stunned if he receives the type of offer that is being suggested. Where do those numbers come from. Do you honestly think that he is likely to be offered a Price like contract? I don't. If he does, he better sign quickly. 3 years with an option - I'm ok with it.
  4. i don't think that they will stand pat either. No one can predict how the team will hit in general without having Papi's bat in the lineup. It makes absolute sense to replace him with a big bat if one is available.
  5. Who says it will be a 5+ year contract? i have not seen or heard anything about this at all. What we we think and what he takes might be dramatically different. Maybe someone will offer him a 5+ year contract to be their dh. I doubt that. I seriously doubt that it will be the Red Sox. The direction I am taking is that if Henry wants him, he will pay what he wants for him. Regardless of what it costs, whether it seems to make sense to us or not, it his money and past history says that it is likely that a signing of this nature will not have much of an effect on the Red Sox ability or desire to sign top talent going forward.
  6. CP link - very reputable!
  7. I might have been the link. i do remember it happening and the discussion around it.
  8. It is a team I love. When we get to the post season, I will be thrilled. Want them to win it all like everyone else but I will take what they give me. It is September and the excitement of a pennant is in the air once again. For me, it has always been about the regular season. Winning their division and getting to the playoffs is a great achievement.
  9. Absolutely!!! Even though our ownership has a history of trying to cobble together a low budget team to meet our most pressing needs (lol) I'm with you on this one. On a team with serious budgetary restrictions maybe it would make sense to patch things together and it might even work but on this team they more than likely will try to replace Papi's bat with another clouter like Encarnarcion.
  10. Has Vazquez put the mask on since he was called up. Where's Waldo? We have seen 3 catchers getting time but none for him? Maybe he has been out there and I have just not noticed. I'm not sure what is up with him but it looks to me like he could be the odd man out for whatever reason.
  11. you and I were thinking about different career norms. I was thinking more of a post 2010 Hanley Ramirez. he can still get around the bases but a base stealer - not so much. I think that winning seems to have energized him. Playing with hungry talented young players doesn't hurt either. Hanley seems to like it here. He isn't going anywhere.
  12. Give credit where credit is due i say. Ramirez is having a great year. Winning is a great motivator! i believe in the old theory that you are never as bad as you look when you are at your worst and that you are never really as good as you look when you are at your best. I felt at the time of the Hanley signing that it was an overpay. Upon second thought, I realized that it wasn't my play money. I believe absolutely that he like most of the entertainers that we feel so warmly about is grossly overpaid. With that in mind, I'm sure happy that he is playing for us. There is virtually no way that he is going to be anywhere but Boston next year and we probably will be the better for it. His numbers could very likely revert back to career norms but who cares. In the heat of a pennant race, if he can crank it up, i think it is all good.
  13. come on now - no selective memories - we all thought that they would be better.
  14. My two girls both got this advise - Life begins after high school! My oldest went to UCONN - great school for whatever. It works.
  15. That popup to third (I think) I remember quite well. 1978 was a sad Red Sox story.
  16. Of course. The point I hope I am making is that some of the guys in our current bullpen look quite a bit better if they are expected to pitch less. That includes them all - good bad and ugly.
  17. I remember when Yaz broke in. As the years progressed so did his power numbers. You are also right about his defensive ability. His baseball IQ was unbelievable. I have said this before but it just doesn't get old for me - I have never seen anyone have a year like Yaz did in 1967. He led (sometimes) carried a very young but talented group into the world series. It always saddens me when I think that Neither he nor Ted ever won the big one. Doesn't seem right.
  18. My realistic view toward 2016 was 86 wins. That thankfully doesn't look like a winner as we move forward. I wonder how the rest of your rememberers are working.
  19. i absolutely believe that pitching less often to a fewer number of hitters can have dramatic effects. it is unbelievable the number of relief pitchers that are being used daily now. A normally good solid arm has to look better with adequate rest. a slightly below average arm can often get a job done if the job isn't a big one. Such as being asked to face one or two batters as opposed to being expected to pitch multiple hitters. The people that we have relied on in the toughest situations all season are getting more rest because of the extra arms that we have out there. If you don't need Kimbrel to be ready nearly every day, maybe he can pitch to 4 hitters a little more often. A rested Koji might just look like like the guy we remember so very well. The trick is using what you have out there in that bullpen to your advantage.
  20. Farrell might look a lot better in general if the Sox could use a 100 man roster - which would include a 50 man bullpen. Nowadays if you can limp into September with any hope at all, you still got a chance.
  21. Oh no no no - Come on - Love you some Moncada!
  22. As you know, I love me some Moncada. but he is still a prospect. I like shaw and think that he is more than adequate at third base for the time being. Actually i tend to think that he will get better with time. If this team did nothing in the off season but sign that big power bat free agent to replace Papi, I would be fine. I think that they will probably look to trade for pitching but I'm not sure that is a huge pressing need. One thing that we know from past history, John Henry isn't likely to start playing small ball with the purse strings. Good for us!
  23. I have been thinking about him for a while now. A very good idea.
  24. Stat masters - give me some info. How many relief pitchers are out in that bullpen currently? Has the expanded roster made it easier to keep your ammo rested? Is that part of the deal? If it is, then hold the fort in the pigpen until the first of September and ride the few well rested horses through to the end. Might de-emphasize the need to spend much money on trying to find relief pitchers.
  25. I agree with you. I'm just guessing like everybody else is here but I don't think that the Red Sox would go to 5/6 years with him. Wouldn't seem to make any sense. If he is actually on the radar for the Sox, I bet that they will make a very creative offer for him that he would have to consider. Who are the dh's out there who are being offered 5 and 6 year contracts at that type of money? I'm giving the organization credit enough to realize that that would be a ridiculous offer for an aging dh no matter how good he might be. 3 years makes more sense to me. No one on here has any idea what he is going to be asking for. If he can get a better deal to be someone's dh for a longer period of time, he better jump on it when the time comes. This time around I think that the Sox get to somewhat dictate what the terms of their offers will be and not simply what the market seems to suggest what they should or could be. Being in a position of strength for once is a good place to be.
