  1. That is undestandable. A good trade accomplishes both though i think. I'm not sure that I would sacrifice the next one or two years for what we might be in 5. There are no guarantees.
  2. I agree with your premise in general. But in actuality it depends on what sensible is to the parties involved. In order to trade for a good one so to speak, it will cost us for sure. Everyone knows that. What is sensible to you might not be sensible to me. What is sensible to us certainly might not be sensible to the organization. In my world, if it is going to cost us one good starter plus, only Betts is untradeable. i think that we improve the team with a trade. I'm for that as opposed to holding a pat hand. I want better pitching.
  3. i know that we have been focusing on the hole left by Ortiz. I don't know if the organization has been or not. I would still love to see a sensible trade made to get us a young totr starter. If no trade is made, I doubt seriously that a big bat gets signed. We have quite a few young position players that we just don't know much about. I don't think that they will all be playing in Pawtucket and Portland. it will become more likely that the dh position will be covered via committee.
  4. I think that a trade of that nature might make sense obviously dependent on which pitcher we traded. Once again though - who is coming aboard? I really also think that if one or more of our young unknowns are traded a big play will be made for a bat to take Papi's place. If no trade is made, it is less likely that a dh bat will get signed.
  5. who did you have in mind that wouldn't require a trade?
  6. For the most part, i agree with you. I will say though that if they don't trade for pitching then it has something to do with them trying to actually figure out what they have in their young players - Moncada, Swihart, Benintendi, Shaw, Travis, Hernandez, Vazquez maybe even Dubon etc. If they don't trade, what do they do with all of them? I think that the two go together. If they trade for pitching, I would expect them to sign the big bat if they can. If they hold the line with the current rotation, i don't see them giving any of these kids away. More than just a couple of those kids will need to play. I hope they go the trade route if a good one presents itself.
  7. I would be pleasantly surprised if Sandoval came into the spring in anything that resembles good physical shape for someone as young as he is. He is young. 30 ain't old for anyone unless you are obsessed with age. He has a good 5 year window where he could possibly thrive uninjured and in a healthy body. Do I expect that? No - but to just assume that he won't be able to get fit because he is 30 is laughable. Fat people get thinner. Motivated people get fit. he has the time to get healthy. Whether he will or not??? It's up to him.
  8. i don't care what is talked about. Just saying. How about we discuss why some think that a decent fielding third baseman who is good for between 15 and 20 h/runs and 70 plus rbis is such an extreme liability for us going forward.
  9. i guess that I might be the only one but I will keep saying - third base really is not a big deal. If that is a real problem for us right now, then we have it pretty good.
  10. Already been mentioned
  11. You are probably right. You know more about whoever he/she is than I do. I will say again though that whatever the role unless they actually play the game they are replaceable and probably easily. Sometimes we tend to make people out to be much more special than they are. It will be a temporary loss and certainly doesn't reflect on the direction the organization is going with respect to the product on the field. I'm sure that some might try to make this a DD story of sorts. That will be too bad!
  12. I agree with you and I sense a mini-conspiracy theory brewing. I don't want them to become top heavy with unnecessary personnel. We are all replaceable! My concern is much more directed toward the players playing as opposed to the executives exectiveing.
  13. This year? He really wasn't all that effective over the course of the season. He pitched in the playoffs pretty much the way he pitched all season. He wilted all season and I don't give a s*** how many games he won. Not ace like this year.
  14. If you have ever played at any type of elevated level in any competitive sport, you know that all of things that we might call human factors - the things that can't be measured exist and are very very important. It is what has always made a life in athletics fun for me. I believe that good solid preparation can certainly make some athletes and teams seem more lucky than others but when the screws start to tighten interesting things that just defy logic quite often happen.
  15. i don't necessarily agree with your feelings about the job Farrell did this fall but I do agree with many of your opinions about the predictability of athletic performances join general.
  16. As the stage gets bigger, the talent level increases, but it doesn't change the fact that the pressure is still there. Most of us regardless of how talented we are, will be affected by pressure. Not everybody wilts when faced with it - not everybody rises above it.
  17. By looking at and dissecting all possible statistics, if Shaw looks like the worst third baseman in the game, that tells me that all of the others aren't bad. It's not as though this young man gave us 0. If he returns as our third baseman it does not foretell impending doom for our team.
  18. On this we agree
  19. Who was that guy who said that Kluber should be the one we go after? i think that I remember him.
  20. I actually kind of agree with you a little bit although I think that inspiration can produce better results more easily in football (control the los) and in basketball (challenge someone to step up defensively) the two sports that I do actually know something about other than baseball and golf. i do think that this team falls short when it comes to playing with excitement and enthusiasm. Every now and then , we have seen some glimmers of adrenaline rushes but maybe not often enough. All players will tell you that they hate to lose it is just that some hate to lose more than others. I like those types of players and coaches.
  21. One thing that we can agree on is that he is a business man. None of us really have any idea what he might do. DD will have a great deal of input for sure. i think that he will do what they think it takes to move this franchise closer to where they want to be. As in winning a world series. he knows perfectly well what this team is worth if he were to sell it. He knows that is when he makes his money if that is what he decides to do. He might actually just like being the owner of this team. I don't think think that he will spend with wanton disregard for the luxury tax but on the other hand if you think that he wouldn't be willing to go over it in order to pay the price that might give this team an edge, I truly think that you are wrong.
  22. Really - Tito vs Madden ??? unbelievable - Much more credit than any managers not to mention these two old farts should ever get. Believe it or not it is the Guardians vs the Cubs and I hope like the dickens that it is all Cleveland.
  23. i think that it is wonderful that we have the wisdom that we have here when assessing our future needs. I'm really not being sarcastic when I say that either. I also think that John Henry would appreciate you all trying to save the money that he has and maybe even make him some more. That might be sarcasm. 1. Trade for a totr young pitcher 2. Sign the big bat to whack it in the middle of the order 3. Sign Koji, and Ziegler if you can and maybe one other Win the East again and then take your chances. Third Base presents no issue whatsoever.
  24. Our hole at 3rd base (uf that is what it should be called) is not insurmountable. Also - iggy still couldn't hit -
  25. Kind of like everything I ever really needed to learn I learned in Kindergarten. Tee ball experiences count too!
