  1. I kept sitting there last night waiting for Barnes to implode. He didn't. I'm not very proud of myself - just an old new England way of looking at things I guess. We have some serous arms in the bullpen right now. In my lifetime, I've never seen a Sox team quite like this one.
  2. Denver's throw to first last night easily could have been dug out of the dirt. I was surprised that it wasn't at least knocked down. Obviously it wasn't a good throw but not allowing the runner to get to second should have been just as important to Moreland as digging a ball out of the dirt and keeping it in front of you by any good catcher in that situation.
  3. Am I the only one here who thinks that Dever's throw really should have been dug out?
  4. I would have him back anyway but I would definitely have him back if these are the words he chose to uses. lol
  5. think you need more rest
  6. I'm with you here. He has given us quite a lot so far but it sure as hell would be nice if he could give us just a little more.
  7. I have to be honest here - I still don't get that feeling with Pomeranz that makes me think that we have a real advantage with him on the mound. He is young and I still think that he might have his best years in front of him.
  8. I don't like the ties!
  9. I don't think that it makes any difference to these guys who they play either where or when. I like that.
  10. A nice first post here. I would add that Vazquez has really surprised me with his overall performance. Vazquez and a Leon backup gives us something pretty good behind the plate.
  11. You get some credit points for being able to accept that you can be wrong too sometimes. We had some fun with the Pomeranz debate didn't we? No one knows how he will ultimately turn out but for the time being it still looks like like a decent deal for us. I think a true fan is the one who is really happy sometimes when it looks like they are wrong. It has worked a lot like that for me. I've been just medium warm for Benintendi and Vazquez all year but right now I would not think about letting them go anywhere!
  12. My kind of post! JBJ says this team has GRIT. I'm thinking that whatever it is, it exists. This isn't randomness, or a game of statistics dictating outcomes. This is a game of one team wanting something real bad. Addison Reed's comments this morning are worth the read. They have become a very interesting team to watch.
  13. Now I'm not sure what I would have done with E-Rod yesterday but one thing to at least give some thought to is that we have a crapload of pitchers in the bullpen right now. Being the traditionalist that I am, i am against roster expansion but you might just as well take advantage of it. JF has lots of options to use. Might not like them all but they do have more available arms out there.
  14. Once those rosters get expanded, there are so many goddam pitchers sitting around down there, a fresh arm is never a bad thing.
  15. and there you have it jbj
  16. ty - we are on the same page. I think that most of us are.
  17. Porcello earned a little bit last night too. lol fun to watch!
  18. If you have been on the sidelines as a coach, you should know the difference between boneheaded and aggressive. In general, you might be right but actually being in the contest might give someone a different perspective on what they are seeing. It is just my opinion understand and people get to choose what they see as boneheaded or aggressive. It would make no difference to me whether a player completed a play successfully or not. Boneheaded, as we tend to define it, just doesn't work. While I say this though, I will freely admit, that on occasion my teams were being aggressive in my way of looking at things, but fans and parents sometimes thought that i was a bonehead. I would never have argued with them about that. Go figure - most of the time you are never all right or all wrong.
  19. It is the beauty of the games we play isn't it. While we are on the subject how about Salty's comments about analytics last night. Just another professional athlete who doesn't know what he is talking about. Into ghosts too!
  20. It kind of looks to me as though the cliff exists for those who really don't like Dombrowski's philosophy (whatever they think it is) or seriously questioned every move that he made at the time they were made. If you really liked the way Ben Cherington did business and the way he ran a program, the cliff probably exists. It's obvious that I like DD and for the most part have not questioned seriously any of the moves he has made - for the good or the bad. As it always has, every year presents a fresh set of challenges. This cliff concept doesn't exist for me.
  21. Like I have said many times, I'm not a big Farrell fan but this team (his team) does not quit. I do not think that our everyday players are anything special. I'm sure that someone can show the stats that prove otherwise but I honestly believe that I have seen many Red Sox teams with more talent than we have here. They just don't quit. If I were a playoff team, they would be one of the teams that I really would not look forward to playing not so much because of their talent but because they won't go away. I really like teams like this.
  22. One of their big plusses is that they do not quit. On occasion they do make some seemingly silly mistakes, but you still are going to have to beat them. They don't hang their heads. They are giving us all some good entertainment. I know by now how we all feel about Farrell and he puzzles me too but his team plays hard. Someone is doing something right here in addition to the players. With the injuries to their pitching staff that they have dealt with this year, I tend to think that they have over achieved. In a perfect case scenario, we would have had Sale, Price (the good one), Porcello (at least sort of close to last year Porcello), Pomeranz, E-Rod, Wright (remember him), with Smith and Thornburg. My hindsight meter says that we would have been out of Yankee reach by now if things had worked out the way we hoped they would.
  23. In a perfect world, umpires decisions should not cost teams games but they do. Are those mental mistakes acceptable? I hope not. That is the reality though. Essentially it doesn't matter how much importance we place on the stupid mental mistakes any team makes that we have seen. It is quite possible that they have cost us a game or games. One game lost to a foolish mental mistake is one game lost too many. A primary purpose of having a coach is to have someone who wants his team to play a pefect game even though we all know that that is impossible. A stupid error early in a game certainly could lead to a loss. That is just the way it is. Whether it is an umpires mistake, a coaches gaff, or something a player does, if they just get accepted as the way things go because there 27 outs in a game, then someone just isn't doing a very good job.
  24. I think that you are right. Also, most of this discussion has revolved around really bad mental mistakes not the normal ebb and flow of the game types of occurrences. There are all kinds of things that happen over the course of any game that can shape its' outcome but eliminating the truly stupid mistakes certainly gives your team a better chance to win.
