  1. We only know what's been reported, of course. Maybe something further did happen before the talks shut down.
  2. Maybe his counteroffer pissed them off or they interpreted it as a message that he simply wasn't interested in a price that was in their range. Keep in mind that he still had a full 2 years to free agency, so they were offering him security and hoping for a reduced price in return. Also, they had made other extension offers to him in the past that got no traction. Strange things happen in these negotiations. It was often asked why the Red Sox and Lester had no further discussions after their initial lowball offer of 4/$70 million.
  3. I believe the Red Sox FO, at their annual season-ending press conference after 2018, were talking about the future of the team and they said while they'd love to be able to keep all of Betts, Bogaerts and Sale, they didn't think they'd be able to keep all of them. I think they went to Mookie first, and based on his counter-offer they decided he was simply determined to go to free agency. This was in keeping with all Mookie's words and actions on the matter. Then they went to Sale and Bogaerts and got those extensions done. Seems perfectly simple and logical to me.
  4. So based on those hopes, you're feeling good about being a contender in 2021?
  5. As I assume you know, the same reports are that Mookie countered at $420 million, and that's where the talks ended.
  6. As currently constituted, the Yankees are a 33-27 team minus LeMahieu, Tanaka, Paxton and Happ.
  7. The extensions for Sale and Bogaerts weren't done until March, 2019. It seems extremely likely that the reported $300 million offer to Betts, which occurred that same offseason, would have occurred well before that.
  8. I think we've already discussed the possibility that the offers to Eovaldi and Sale came after the failed offer to Mookie. It actually makes more sense that way.
  9. So why do think they made the $300 million offer to Mookie? Just for looks? I've said many times that Henry has spent faithfully on the team. But the highest contract he's given out is Price's $217 million. Mookie's deal could have been 50-75% more than that. So that is definitely in new territory. Also, Henry does have a history of drawing a line. In the infamous A-Rod negotiations, the Sox balked when the Players Union insisted on an adjustment that was only about $12 million, IIRC. They let Pedro walk. Damon. J-Bay. And so on.
  10. You keep trying to spin it back to the same thing - that DD's overspending prevented us from keeping Mookie. The fact is that the Red Sox offered him $300 mill. I tend to think DD would have been in favor of offering more than that. When you get into those price ranges, the owners generally make the call.
  11. He's playing possum! Seriously though, it seems like a little too much was being read into Bloom's comments there. Not being in an 'all-in' mode right now is not the same thing as punting on 2021.
  12. Seems more likely Dombrowski wanted to offer him a lot more than $300 mill and Henry/Werner said no. Dave has never been known to be a penny-pincher with contract offers to elite talents...
  13. I'm moreso blaming it for the Dodgers getting that crazy low 25.55 AAV. Gerrit Cole's AAV is 10.45 mill higher than that!
  14. He's a Mariners fan. Most days he's able to suppress all the bitterness that entails. Yesterday was not one of those days.
  15. Yep. Of course the Dodgers were able to play the pandemic card. The fickle finger of fate got us on this one.
  16. 25.55 for Mookie is virtually chump change, seriously. I feel a bit sick since I learned that he took basically less money than what was surely our opening offer of 300 million for 10 years.
  17. There are still 3 months or more left in the offseason and all the pitchers mentioned as possible targets for us are still out there. I prefer to believe Bloom is playing the long game to get as much bang for the buck as possible. If we stand pat from here out, I'll be as shocked as anyone.
  18. We understand that you are frustrated and disappointed by the key personnel losses suffered by your 33-27 Yankees, and the complete inertia of Hal and Cash since signing Cole.
  19. What? You are being very opinionated today.
  20. Kimmi, I hate to say it, but that contract is a great one for the Dodgers. I just learned that because of the deferred money, Mookie's AAV throughout the contract will only be 25.55 million. That's 4.45 mill LESS than what it would have been if he agreed to the Red Sox 10 year, $300 million offer.
  21. You can't call it blind faith with Henry at least. His record of spending on the team over 19 seasons is sufficient basis for some faith.
  22. The Dean of Old School.
  23. Not me. Most probably would, though.
  24. Now we've got 3 threads talking about the same stuff LOL
