  1. Have to leave it to Jax to explain exactly how a big market owner operates.
  2. I'm a bit cynical, I think most players take the highest dollar offer. I'm reasonably sure Boston was not David Price's first pick of destinations. But $217 million overcame that quite nicely. Last offseason there were reportedly 3 teams bidding on Gerrit Cole: Yankees, Dodgers and Angels. The Dodgers and Angels hung in there at 8 years * 36 mill. The Yankees bumped it to 9 years and won the auction. That's how Cole picked his favorite destination.
  3. Perez pitched against both the Jays and Yanks in September and gave up 1 run in 12.2 innings.
  4. Seems to set up a classic Catch-22: in order to be able to get good players, you have to get good players first!
  5. Henry has never operated as a big market owner? Intriguing take.
  6. Padres to acquire Musgrove. Wow, they are gobbling up starting pitchers this offseason like Pac-Man.
  7. I think I already looked into that and found it wasn't so.
  8. Yes, and they don't calculate it till after the season. There are year end accounting adjustments to be made by the bean-counters for things like opt-outs that are exercised.
  9. It might have something to do with the fact that none of them are top tier, too.
  10. I think it made room for Perez.
  11. Hendriks got a nice 3 year deal. Any reason why relievers would be much different?
  12. He's got 3 arb years left. Projected at 4.2 mill this year, I think. That will climb in 2022 and 2023. The math on this one really eludes me.
  13. Yes, I read that Kluber didn't take the highest offer. And I'm sure there are cases where a player will take a bit less money to play where they want. But Kluber wouldn't be a Yankee unless Hal Steinbrenner gave Cashman enough budget room to cover the $11 million. And the fact that DJL and Kluber are now with the Yankees might mean other players will be more interested to join them, but it won't matter in the least if Cash has used up all his budget room. It all starts with the money, that's my point.
  14. That's really jumping in the Way Back Machine, though.
  15. All for a pitcher who is projected at 3.5-3.7 WAR.
  16. Ahead of getting paid, though? We've all heard the story of Pedro being instrumental in signing Ortiz. But that was a little different, Ortiz was available for peanuts. Give me some real world stories of players signing for significantly less to go to a winner, and I'll get misty-eyed too.
  17. But since the season ended, the only pitching addition is Andriese.
  18. Hmmm, well, I don't see how Good Player A can successfully recruit Good Player B without ownership being on board to pay Good Player B what he wants.
  19. Keeping Price would only have been an incremental cost of $32 mill, though...
  20. Is Porcello any more avoid-worthy than Perez?
  21. I was using hyperbole for rhetorical effect.
  22. Dave drafted him, too.
  23. They're betwixt and between, though, aren't they? NESN ratings nosedived the last 2 seasons. If the Red Sox want to be the Rays, their revenues are going to show it too.
