    A sensitive DD worshiper might argue that he recognized that a lot of our highly rated prospects were overrated. Farm rankings are not gospel truth, and I would hope the people who run the teams are a little bit better judges than the people who make those rankings.

    Has any of the statmeisters actually stated as a straight-out fact that clutch and choke don't exist? Or have they said it can't be proved that they exist? I can't accept the idea that they have proved it doesn't exist. Generally speaking you cannot prove a negative.

    And it adds up to a 775 OPS and 104 OPS+. Let's face it, Dalbec looked like he was toast for a little while there. The team decided to stick with him and I have to assume they're working with him hard on his approach at the plate.

    Bloom inherited a very tricky state of affairs for sure. And I think he's done a very good job. At the same time, the 2021 Red Sox are a good team, and Bloom made some bad acquisitions (Richards, Marwin etc.). So obviously what he took over was far from unworkable. He didn't have to perform miracles, just had to be smart. Which he is.

    "Streaky" is way overused as a pejorative. Look at Mookie's game logs this year. He's streaky too. Many of the best hitters are.

    Bobby Dalbec has now played in 119 MLB games. .775 OPS 22 HR 68 RBI Some would say that's pretty good for the first 3/4 of your first MLB season. As far as bombs off bad pitchers - everybody fattens up their numbers that way.

    It's all part of the Death Rays strategy for domination. They're trying to convince richer teams it's a good idea to sell at the deadline even if you're a contendah.

    Why do you agree about player comfort in line-up slots when the only evidence is anecdotal? This illustrates that you're picking and choosing which assertions can be accepted based on anecdotal evidence alone.

    To me it's a perfect logical premise that confidence and comfort levels in clutch situations have *some* variance from one player to another. I think you have admitted to the existence of other psychological factors: 1) The biggest job of the manager is off the field, keeping his players loose and ready to play. All psychological. 2) Some hitters tend to be more comfortable in certain spots in the batting order, and it's not a good idea to mess with their heads. All psychological. 3) Some pitchers are more comfortable working with some catchers than others. Some of which may relate to actual skill factors, but much of it is psychological. And yet you totally reject the premise that some players handle pressure moments better than others. What data supports the first two propositions above?

    Kimmi, you totally buy into 'comfort level and confidence' being big factors when it comes to pitchers doing better with certain catchers. And yet it's a totally intangible, anecdotal, unprovable position. Seems a little inconsistent to me.

    Good post. The only thing I don't get is the 'No more sentimentality' comment. Not sure what you're getting at there.
