  1. I'm more interested in the CERA thing with McGuire.
  2. Yes, if Whitlock was available is the key there.
  3. But the point is about the Dodgers allegedly fixing a mechanical issue in his swing. You're certainly right that the sample needs to get larger to be taken seriously.
  4. Fair point. Oddly enough when you look at Gallo's K/BB with the Yankees it's not really terrible. The BA sure is, though.
  5. Agreed on all that. One other point, though. If the closer blows a game, it's not really a big deal in the overall picture. If he blows two in a row, though, people start to worry. And if he blows three in a row, the manager might look at changing things up a bit...
  6. There are so many wacky names now it's hard to get to them all. The name Packy Naughton (Cards' pitcher) just makes me grin for no reason.
  7. As long as we score more than the other guys...
  8. He is a clever devil. He's kind of the Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) of baseball executives. Things don't make sense and then they do.
  9. Meanwhile, Gallo is off to a hot start with the Dodgers and says they fixed a mechanical issue in his swing. Maybe the "can't play in New York" thing has something to do with "bad coaching in New York". That's pretty much what Sonny Gray suggested.
  10. Emotionally speaking, yes, it's a painful way to lose. But is there a real carryover effect to the next game, assuming there is one? For the players, I'd said no. One of the adages about closers is that they have to have short memories.
  11. And if they don't win it all this year, it'll be 36 years and counting since their last title, and there will be lots of moaning and groaning. (Sorry, couldn't resist...)
  12. Interesting question. First of all, getting in a bidding war with the Mets or Yankees will more than likely result in a grotesque overpay. But if the owners are all in, yes I believe he would do it.
  13. If Barnes had pitched this well at the start of the year, the "no closer" thing wouldn't been the issue that it became. Sure it's frustrating, but such is life.
  14. Good small samples are still better than bad small samples.
  15. It's a mutual option of some sort.
  16. I know one thing, Whitlock is a damn good pitcher. Thanks Cashman!
  17. W-L records for relievers have pretty much always been irrelevant. And W-L records for starters are becoming less relevant all the time, with the reductions in starter innings.
  18. Bloom should have signed a better late inning reliever than Diekman. That would be my major criticism of his 2022 bullpen construction.
  19. Pham had a .238 BA with a .694 OPS this year before coming to Boston. People would have been griping about him too.
  20. Enough about the RH outfielder. It's been way overblown. Bloom DID sign Refsnyder. And he liked Arroyo's bat, and lately Arroyo has been one of our best hitters. And now we have Pham.
  21. I don't know if it was the best thing for the Red Sox, but it was probably the best thing for Tito's physical and mental health. 8 years managing the Red Sox is a long time. And even though he won 2 titles, he endured a lot of abuse. It's a tough gig.
  22. So what is the definition of sustained excellence in MLB? Under the current playoff structure, I would guess it's something like this: making the playoffs 80-90% of the time, and winning it all at least once a decade.
  23. 2011 was a hell of a mess, there's no way around that. Leading to Epstein gone, Francona gone, Valentine in, the Punto trade...
  24. Yes, but it's also the media's job to stir up s***, because that's what tends to get people's interest.
  25. If you don't think there's any disdain in your posts about moon, maybe you need to check the meaning of the word.
