I thought you might respond to my last post on the "How would you use Whitlock next year" thread, about how Cora used him in the last game with Minnesota.

So what's the point of asking the same question again? We all know how each other feels by now, I would think. It's all just shooting the breeze between games anyway.

In the last 2 games JD has 3 hits including a homer, and a walk. If it's all about the hot hand, he should be in the lineup too. -
What irked me was we heard they were talking to Collin McHugh, and then we signed Diekman. McHugh got 2 years and $10 mill while Diekman got 2 and $8 mill. McHugh has a 2.73 ERA in 56 innings and a 1.1 fWAR, equivalent to about a 3 fWAR for starters.

Yes, analytics hates giving away outs. Bunting for a base hit is a different story, mind you.

If you said mediocre I'd agree. But sucked and horrible is simply wrong. There have been much worse busts.

Schwarb has an fWAR of 1.9 and a bWAR of 1.6.

2 WAR is average for full-time position players and starting pitchers. You have to adjust for part-time players and relievers.

The article states "Average starting pitchers are worth around 2 WAR." Not sure how much clearer it can be.

The way Cora used Whitlock last night was a perfect example of the relief ace concept, pitching the 7th and 8th instead of the 9th. (Obviously not one of his better outings this time.) Part of the strategy is that it gives your team 2 innings to tack onto the lead so the 9th inning is easier for the closer, or you don't need your closer at all. -
Schwarb has 36 HR's this year. He's also hitting .214, and he leads the NL in K's with 167.

His FanGraphs WAR is a lot higher. Thereby hangs a tale.

Porcello made $95 million for his 5 years with Boston. His total dollar value for those years per FanGraphs, based on average productivity of free agents, was $104.7 million.

Solid Starter is 2-3 WAR. So based on that: 1 year Superstar 2 years Solid Starter 2 years Role Player 5 year Average = Solid Starter How you get horrible out of that I don't know.

It would have been great to bring him back, but 4 years and $79 million was a pile of money for his limited skill set.

That's exactly it. The funny thing is I remember a number of times when Ortiz was pinch run for late in a game, and it came back to haunt us, and fans would heap abuse on the manager for it. It can be a thankless job. One thing I'm sure of is that Cora was not snoozing on the play, it was a conscious decision. -
Porcello was slightly above average in quality, well above average in quantity. There's a lot of value in being able to take the ball every 5th day and deliver 5-6 innings as he did.

It's not an excuse. It's a percentage play. I've seen it done that way many times (waiting till the runner gets to second).
