It can be used against players, too. Varitek was considered a clubhouse leader, and when the Sox collapsed in 2011 and had all the finger-pointing, he was getting blamed for not providing leadership.

Henry has been very consistent. He's always spent on the team, and he's always shown he won't let the spending get out of control.

I get that, but the fact is the team was 8-19 in July, so Vaz's leadership didn't seem to be paying off in wins at that point...

Go look at the standings on August 1 and the teams that were ahead of us. The Yankees, Astros and Jays were the only teams that were more than 6 games over .500 and had a run differential of better than +28. The Rays were 54-48 with a differential of +18.

The facts are these: -They were 3 games out a Wild Card spot at the deadline. -Players on the IL at the time but expected back included Sale, Story, Kike and possibly Paxton. Obviously many of us felt the team was "going nowhere". But management of the Boston Red Sox doesn't have the luxury of thinking that way. They've got fans paying a lot of money to answer to.

Hard disagree. We still had a shot. Frankly, the 2021 team's chances at a ring didn't look much better at the deadline than the 2022 team's. The 2021 team was incredibly lucky to get into the playoffs. And then look what happened.

I think Cora and the Sox are doing a decent job being fair to everyone while also getting a look at some guys. It's one of the reasons I still think Cora is a good manager.

His OPS with the Red Sox should look pretty nice after today. Good small samples are better than bad ones!

Maybe so, but go back and look at some good Red Sox teams of the past, even World Series champs, and you'll find that the #3 starter usually did not have great numbers.

McGuire is really starting to look like a nice acquisition by Bloom.

It's quite possible he has lost some power. But he has made up for it in every other way. That's what the advanced stats say, anyway.
